EDUC 331 Learning Environments Syllabus Spring 2020

CATALOG COURSE TITLE & NUMBER​: EDUC 331 Learning Environments COURSE CREDIT HOURS:​ 3 Credits

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION: ​: Learning Environments discusses various theories of classroom management, various learning environments, and the creation of safe schools. This class analyzes how policy, theory, and diagnostics play out in “real world” settings and

elaborates on trends to redesign school systems so that students are prepared for the information age by establishing rigor, relevance, and continuity in education from kindergarten to

postsecondary education.

RATIONALE AND STATEMENT OF CULTURAL CONTENT: ​During the process of the course Learning Environments, participants and the instructor will explore the ways that

classroom teaching can reflect both the core values and the processes of learning environments. Anishinabe, as well as other cultures will be explored. Students will be required to visit local classrooms. Students will experience and reflect on various classroom environment topics including management, learning styles, school safety and differentiated instruction. LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Students will be able to:

1. Identify factors that influence student motivation, learning, and pro social behavior. 2. Explain the interconnectedness of curriculum, instruction, assessment and their effect on

classroom management.

3. Produce and teach a mini lesson that supports at least one of the seven teachings.

4. Analyze your own philosophy of teaching practices and identify your classroom management plan.

5. Create a plan for a safe environment conducive to healthy learning for all students. 6. Summarize ways to develop a positive home-school connection.

7. Implement strategies for promoting positive self- esteem, thus preventing discipline problems.

CLASS PROCEDURES: ​Discussion, direct instruction including lecture and power point, videos, small group work, peer teaching, student demonstrations and presentations, individual work, and field- based applications.

ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION: ​Regular attendance is mandatory. Please be on time and plan to stay for the entire class period. Class participation will count toward your grade. Points will be deducted for tardiness. Always notify the instructor, by phone, email or in person,
