Mathematics

Comparing and classifying right angled and equilateral triangles

Thursday 4th February

Right angle triangles

-One of the angles is always a right angle (90°) - You can't have more than one right angle in a right angle triangle.

Equilateral triangles

- The 3 sides are all the same length - The 3 angles are all the same size

All triangles have 3 sides, 3 vertices and no parallel lines (this is because all the sides are touching each other).

When added together, the angles in a triangle will always add up to 180°

Independent task

Cut up your triangles (found on the last page of your pack) and rearrange them so that all 9 triangles can fit together to create 1 large

equilateral triangle.

Extension: Can you make an even larger triangle by re-arranging the equilateral triangles?

Adventure Story – Editing and Publishing

Editing

Today is your last day of editing your story. Follow the checklist below and add any additions before publishing.

Publishing

When publishing you want to ensure the story has a title (so we know what the story is about), the name of the author (so we know who’s written it) and everything is written in the correct order.

The Structure of your story should look like this:

Are you writing in paragraphs?

- These paragraphs should be sequenced in time order.

Have you used;

- Capital letters - Full stops - Question marks - Commas

Have you used conjunctions?

(when, if, that, because, and, but, or, today, tomorrow) Have you included a setting and character description?

Have you included the use of relative clauses?

- The girl, who had blonde hair, slipped and fell on the ice.

Have you included dialogue?

Have you written in past tense the whole time?

- He went to the store and bought some crisps

Title

Your title should tell us something about the story to give us an insight into what we are reading

Author

- This should be your name Body of the text

- The story you have written following the order of the story mountain:

How are volcanoes formed?

Based on your knowledge of how mountains are formed, how do you think volcanoes are formed?

Key Knowledge:

A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s crust that allows magma, hot ash and gases to escape.

The majority of volcanoes in the world form along the boundaries of Earth’s tectonic plates.

Around 75% of the world’s active volcanoes are underwater.

There are four types of volcano:

cinder cones, composite, shield, lava dome.

Thursday 4th February Year 5 - Geography What is a volcano?

A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s crust that allows magma, hot ash and gases to escape. Magma is molten rock — rock that is so hot it has turned into liquid. When magma reaches the Earth’s surface it is called lava. It comes out of the volcano as a volcanic eruption, along with gases and ash. Volcanoes can look like mountains or small

hills, depending on what type they are. An eruption occurs when pressure in the magma chamber forces magma up the main vent, towards the crater at the top of the volcano. Some magma will also be forced out of the secondary vent at the side of the volcano.

Thursday 4th February Year 5 - Geography

The majority of volcanoes in the world form along the boundaries of Earth’s tectonic plates. When tectonic plates collide, one often plunges deep below the other in what’s known as a

subduction zone. Pressure builds up inside the Earth from the movement of the tectonic plates and magma rises through cracks or weaknesses in the Earth’s crust. When this pressure is released, magma explodes to the surface causing a volcanic

eruption. A volcano is formed by eruptions of lava and ash. Volcanoes are usually cone shaped mountains or hills. When magma reaches the Earth’s surface it is called lava. When the lava cools, it forms rock. The lava from the eruption cools to form new crust. Over time, after several eruptions, the rock builds up and a volcano forms. Some volcanoes happen underwater, along the seabed or ocean floor.

2) Explain the process of how volcanoes are formed.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Scientists have classified volcanoes into three main categories: active, dormant, and extinct. An active volcano is one which has recently erupted and there is a possibility that it may erupt again. A dormant volcano is one which has not erupted in a long time but there is a possibility it could erupt in the future. An extinct volcano is one which has erupted thousands of years ago and there’s no possibility of eruption.

In your own words, define each type of volcano.

Dormant

Extinct
