Combined Degree Program
BA in Human Services / MPA (Masters of Public Administration)
Curriculum:
For BA in Human Services:
1. The general requirements stated under Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (See Bulletin).
2. Prerequisite course- Soc 1001
3. Other required courses: HMSR 3152, 2171, 2172, 2176, 1177, 2182, 4195; Soc 1001, 2104; Phil 2135, one course selected from COMM 1040, 1041, 1042, 2120; 3 credit hours of a 1000-level course in one other field of study, as approved by the 5-year Program advisor.
4. 12 credit hours of approved Public Administrative courses taken in the last year of the BA, which can be counted towards both the BA and the MA.
For MPA:
Established curriculum for the MPA (see Bulletin), with 1 credit hour prerequisite course (PPPA 6000) taken during the junior year, with the 12 credit hours approved MPA coursework taken during the last year of the BA in HMSR.
Total number of credit hours for the MPA is 40, including the 13 credit hrs. taken in the last years of the undergraduate program.
Financial Implications: In the 4th year of this program, in order to maintain any financial aid you may have, 51% of your total credit hours must be in undergraduate courses. Options include adding a 1-credit course to your 4th year or taking one 4-credit rather than a 3-credit course in the 4th year.
Schedule:
Applications are due in the Spring semester of your Junior year. Applications are due by
January 15th. See the following website to apply. (Application fee has been waived for 5 yr.
Program applicants.) http://columbian.gwu.edu/grad/index.php/id/44. You’ll need at least a 3.5 GPA to be competitive. GRE’s are required, and you’ll need scores at the 40th percentile or better just to be considered, so make arrangements to take the GRE’s before or around the time the application is submitted. You will also need 2 letters of recommendation for the application packet: one from Prof. Morrison; or one from another faculty in HMSR; one from a supervisor in a job or service site. Students will need 3 letters of recommendation if the student wants to be considered for financial aid.

Combined Degree Program: BA in Human Services and MPA
This Combined Degree Program is a five-year Bachelor of Arts with a major in human services and Master of Public Administration. All requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in the field of human services are to be completed, with the following required courses in public administration taken as specified.
Requirements
Prerequisite: 1 credit: PPPA 6000 (counted toward BA requirements) Core Courses: 21 Credits (7 courses)
PPPA 6001, 6002, 6003, and 6005 are double-counted toward the BA and MPA PPPA 6004, 6006, and 6009, are taken in the student’s final year of study Concentration: 9-12 credits (3-4 courses). Students choose from MPA concentrations. Electives: 6-9 Credits (2-3 courses)
Total: 40 credits: 12 counted towards the BA and MPA, 28 counted towards MPA
Scheduling
In addition to undergraduate courses and assuming no transferred credit: Third year: PPPA 6000
Fourth year, fall: PPPA 6001 and 6003 Fourth year, spring: PPPA 6002 and 6005
Fifth year, fall: PPPA 6004 and 6006, plus two courses (concentration or elective)
Fifth year, spring: PPPA 6009, plus three courses (concentration and/or elective) one of any concentration in public administration and two electives
Application
Assuming students have not transferred any credits into GW, application to the graduate portion of the program occurs during the fifth semester (at completion of 75 credit hours, 45 of which have been completed at GW). Students must be accepted for the graduate portion of the

Eligibility
Students should have a 3.50 GPA.
Students with majors in the Elliott School of International Affairs are not eligible for this Combined Degree Program.

Timeline for completing BA (Human Services)-MPA
First year
• Take classes toward BA requirements
Second year

• Take PPPA 6000 (counts toward BA) (see TSPPPA for permission) • Take the GRE
