“The mission of Carroll Middle School is to provide a safe and caring environment in which we will assist our students in developing the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become life-long learners and productive individuals.”

Welcome to Carroll Middle School for the 2021-22 school year! I hope you are enjoying the warm weather and sunshine this summer has provided. After another challenging year, we all deserved a break to get outside and interact with friends and family. As the summer winds down, we are getting excited to see our students back at CMS. We are looking forward to making connections, building relationships, and pushing our students to high levels of achievement.

A major goal at Carroll Middle School is teaching students how to achieve socially and academically. Our staff works hard to ensure students are achieving to the best of their abilities. We believe that when families and teach-ers work together our students will get the most out of their experience at CMS. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our staff with any needs or concerns regarding your student as we are always willing to help. We want to make the transition back to what we hope is a more normal year. Carroll Middle works to build lasting relationships with our students to help them through these middle years and beyond. We have a school mantra, WE ARE CHARGERS, that focuses on positive behavior centered on Achievement, Respect, Responsibility, and Empathy. We strive to ensure CMS is a safe and healthy learning environment for every student.

We would like to say good-bye and thank you to Mr. Tony Terrell who retired after 42 years of teaching mathematics. We appreciate all the hard work and dedication he put into teaching students over all those wonderful years. Please join me in welcoming our new teachers:

Maria Culbertson – 8th grade social studies

Brianna Cumberland – Special education 6th and 7th grades Jason Lantz – 6th grade mathematics

Lindsey Miner – Careers

Rachel Polley – English New Language Learners Ryan Roy – Physical education

Kyle Skinner – Guidance counselor

Each year I encourage students to get involved at CMS. Middle school opens the doors for students to get involved in things they enjoy outside of the school day. Last year we had limits on several activities, and I am hoping we can get back on track by offering multiple clubs and activities. These are great opportunities for students to build relationships and community within their school. The friendships students can make during these times are invaluable to their overall success as a student. We will begin communicating different activities and options once school starts. We will have several announcements and fliers for our various activities.

Welcome back!

Carroll Middle School PTO Information

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! My name is Gloria Squire. I have the honor of serving once again as the PTO

Pres-ident. The PTO meets once a month, usually on a Monday evening, in the CMS Library. Please check the CMS newsletter and the

Carroll Middle School PTO’s Facebook page for the exact date, time and location. Our Facebook page is closed to the public. We

hope you will join us.

Please note, we are still looking to fill several vital PTO positions for this school year including Vice President and

Hospi-tality. If you are interested, please call the CMS office, email us at CarrollMiddleSchoolPTO@gmail.com or reach out to us through

our Facebook page. We would greatly appreciate it if you would also consider signing up for volunteer opportunities as they

be-come available throughout the year. We hope to see a much closer return to normal this school year. If we are to sponsor activities,

it will be imperative that we fill all necessary board and volunteer positions.

While attending registration this year, don’t forget to stop by the PTO table and the CMS Bookstore. Students can find

vari-ous school supplies as well as school spirit gear, such as lanyards, in the CMS Bookstore adjacent to the cafeteria. Lastly, included

with this newsletter is the PTO Registration/Sponsor Your Student form. Sponsor Your Student is the PTO’s largest

fund-raiser of the year! We understand money may continue to be tight this year. There is nothing to sell. You decide how much you

give to help support the PTO activities.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact any one of the PTO board members. Thank you as always for your

support. We are looking forward to a great year!

Respectfully,

Gloria Squire, CMS PTO President

COUNSELOR’S CORNER

Welcome Back! This year CMS is excited to welcome a third counselor to our guidance team! Mr. Kyle Skinner

will be joining us following his internship at Eel River Elementary. As a 2001 graduate of Carroll High School, Kyle is

thrilled to start his career as a school counselor at the district he grew up attending. Kyle is excited to develop/grow a

strong relationship with our students and their families throughout the school year. The three of us will now be assigned

to a grade level: Kyle Skinner (6th grade), Amber Starkel (7th grade), and Melissa Robison (8th grade). We are excited

to continue building relationships with students and helping them navigate their time in middle school and beyond. Part

of that process is assisting students with any questions they or their parents have regarding academic, social, or

emotional well-being. If you have questions or concerns about your student’s schedule, feel free to call the school office

and leave a message with your counselor, or send an email. We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted our

last two schoolyears and adapting to these changes can pose a variety of challenges. We are here to help provide support

in any way that we can as we get ready to start a new schoolyear together.

As we all know, middle school years come with many changes. Those changes must be navigated with teamwork

and communication. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of these two concepts when working toward the goal

of a student’s academic, social, and emotional progress. This requires the combined effort of students, parents, teachers,

counselors, principals, and other building staff. CMS is blessed to continue having two full core teams of teachers at the

6th and 7th grade levels; each with their own team leader. Our 8th grade students will continue to not be teamed this

year as a way to allow for more flexibility in student schedules. Our design for teaming is to make a school of 950+

students feel smaller. Each team has approximately 160 students they monitor, manage, and mentor. Our core teams

meet several times a week to collaborate and work together. Additionally, part of this team time is used to meet with

parents. If you find yourself concerned about your student’s grades, behavior, or social issues, please feel free to contact

CMS and set up a team meeting. We are amazed at the changes we see in students’ progress when we ALL work

together to assist students with challenges they face in middle school.

Speaking of challenges middle schoolers face, we wanted to take a moment to encourage parents to continue

monitoring their student’s social media and technology usage. As you know, phones have become more advanced and

full data plans are now considered the “norm” by many of our students. With this, we have seen a huge rise with

inappropriate postings and pictures on social media. Often times what happens outside of school on platforms such as

Instagram or Snapchat makes its way into school and disrupts learning. Please continue to actively monitor, discuss, and

guide your student through these challenging middle school years. Having trouble knowing where to start? Please check

out the guidance tab on the CMS website. We’ve put together a document entitled “Social Media and Technology

Recommendations.”

Greetings from the Athletic Director!

One of our top priorities at Carroll Middle School is to maintain high standards and promote positive experiences for students in both extra-curricular and academic activities. As students think about this coming school year, we encourage them to consider participating in our fall sports options: volleyball, cross country and football. This newsletter includes tryout and practice information for each sport. Participation in volleyball and football is limited to 7th and 8th graders, but cross country is open to 6th, 7th and 8th graders. For those students who are hesitant to get in-volved, please don’t be! Try new things! Make new friends! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Online deposits can be credited to your students account the same day. There is a $2 fee for online deposits.

We will accept Discover, MasterCard & Visa credit and debit cards. We will still gladly accept deposits at

the registers in cash or check form but do prefer online deposits at this time.

You will need your students ID number to enroll. This can be found on their ID card, book fee statement,

transfer any funds that have been deposited online amongst your students.

Another feature Meal Magic allows is family deposits. You may send in one check for multiple students

re-gardless what school they attend. As before, any balances remaining at the end of a school year will transfer

with the student within NACS.

Textbook Assistance Information

While all meals are free for all students this year, you will still need to apply for textbook assistance.

Textbook Assistance applications from the 2020-2021 School Year will expire on September 19, 2021

You must fill out a new application each year or be qualified through Direct Cert. Textbook assistance

does not carry over. Medicaid recipients will continue to qualify this year.

Applications for textbook assistance for school year 2021-2022 will be taken after July 1, 2021 at

www.LunchApp.com. The link for that site will be available on July 1, 2021 on the Food Service website.

Paper applications will also be available at the school offices on July 1, 2021 as well as during registration.

The Direct Certification process is a computer matching system which we use to match students in our

data-base with those currently receiving Medicaid, TANF or Food Stamp (SNAP) benefits. We send all matching

families a letter stating their approval and the students that will receive benefits. Should you receive a letter

and a student is not listed, please contact our office at (260) 637-8768. Direct Cert approval letters should be

received prior to registration if you were qualified for SNAP benefits prior to our matching process. If you

do not wish to receive these benefits please sign the letter, state that you wish to decline benefits and return it

to our office.

Northwest Allen County Schools

Device Protection Plan 2021-2022

Northwest Allen County Schools is pleased to launch our NACS EDGE initiative, equipping each K-12

student with a laptop or Chromebook for use in their education. It is the student’s responsibility to

protect the device from damage, loss, or theft. All repairs must be handled only by the NACS Technology

Department. This optional Device Protection Plan offers some assistance in managing expenses due to

accidental damage.

Program Enrollment:

The cost of the program is an annual, non-refundable fee of $25, payable to the school by cash or check, or

by credit/debit card in the Online Payments section of the NACS website.

Coverage begins upon receipt of payment and this signed agreement.

Coverage ends when the device is returned at the end of the school year or upon withdrawal. If the device

remains with the student over summer break, coverage ends at the start of the first day of the new school

year.

To enroll in the program after the device has been delivered to the student, the device must first be

inspect-ed by the Technology Department and any neinspect-edinspect-ed repairs must be made at full cost before coverage will

go into effect.

Program enrollment remains with the student, even if the original device is replaced by another unit. It is

not transferrable to another student.

As this is an optional program, fees for students on a free or reduced lunch program are not discounted.

Program Coverage:

This Device Protection Plan covers the NACS laptop or Chromebook, AC adapter, and case.

Repairs deemed by the NACS Technology Department to be due to defect or issues that would normally be

covered under a manufacturer’s warranty will be made at no charge to the student, regardless of

participa-tion in this program. Such repairs will not count against the student’s total cost of repairs for purposes of

this program.

Damages deemed by administration to be intentional are not covered by this plan and the student will be

charged the full cost of the repairs or device replacement. Such repairs will not count against the student’s

total cost of repairs for purposes of this program.

Loss or theft of the device is not covered by this program. The student is responsible for the full

replace-ment cost if the device is lost or stolen. (The Lenovo 11e laptop is approximately $450; the Chromebook is

approximately $325.)

For other repairs, the student will be charged 25% of the cost of the replacement part(s) needed. There is

no charge for labor.

(12)

Approximate part costs and the resulting charge to student with and without this plan:

If the total cost of repairs made throughout the program year reaches $500 (slightly more than

the cost of the laptop), this agreement is considered complete and further repairs will be

charged at 100%.

NACS Device Protection Plan Enrollment Form

I wish to enroll my child in the NACS Device Protection Plan as described in this document. I understand:

• Coverage begins upon receipt of my payment and form, and ends when the device is returned or

on the first day of the next school year. (If coverage is purchased after receipt of the device, see

the school media center to obtain signoff on condition.*)

• Coverage does not include intentional damage, loss, or theft of the device.

• For other damage, I will be responsible for 25% of the cost of the repair parts.
