Me t h o d o l o g y

O u r s u r v e y i n s t r u m e n t w a s a s e l f - a d m i n i s t e r e d q u e s t i o n n a i r e d e s i g n e d b y D r . V i c t o r G e l i n e a u a n d h i s s t a f f i n 1 9 7 2 l a n d u s e d b y t h e D i v i s i o n i n s u r v e y s o f t h i s n a t u r e n e a r l y a d o z e n t i m e s i n t h e i n t e r v e n i n g s e v e n y e a r s . T h e o n l y c h a n g e s i n t h e i n s t r u m e n t w e r e t h e a d d i t i o n o f q u e s t i o n s p e r t a i n i n g t o t h e u s e o f P C P ~ a n d t h e d e l e t i o n o f a n u m b e r o f q u e s t i o n s a t t h e r e q u e s t o f s c h o o l a d m i n - i s t r a t o r s b e c a u s e t h e q u e s t i o n s were a s s e s s e d a s b e i n g o f t o o p e r s o n a l a n a t u r e 3 .

I n t o t a l , we c o n d u c t e d t h e s u r v e y s i n e l e v e n o f t h e f o u r t e e n s c h o o l s i n B e r k s h i r e C o u n t y w h i c h h a d h i g h s c h o o l a g e p o p u l a t i o n s . I n t h r e e s c h o o l s , t h e a d m i n i s t r a t i o n c h o s e n o t t o p a r t i c i p a t e i n t h e s u r v e y . T h e s a m p l e w a s c o m p o s e d o f s t u d e n t s f r o m f o u r commu- n i t y h i g h s c h o o l s , o n e r e g i o n a l h i g h s c h o o l , t w o r e g i o n a l v o c a t i o n a l

t e c h n i c a l h i g h s c h o o l s , o n e p a r o c h i a l h i g h s c h o o l , a n d n i n t h g r a d e c l a s s e s o f t h r e e j u n i o r h i g h s c h o o l s .

I n s c h o o l s w h e r e h o m e r o o m s w e r e a r r a n g e d a l p h a b e t i c a l l y , w e t o o k a t e n p e r c e n t r a n d o m s a m p l e o f h o m e r o o m s . I n o t h e r s c h o o l s w h e r e h o m e r o o m s w e r e a r r a n g e d a c c o r d i n g t o s o m e s t u d e n t c h a r a c t e r - i s t i c ( e . g . , f i r s t p e r i o d c l a s s ) , we a s s u m e d t h a t t h i s a r r a n g e m e n t c o u l d h a v e a b i a s i n g e f f e c t o n t h e s a m p l e a n d t o o k a t e n p e r c e n t r a n d o m s a m p l e f r o m c l a s s l i s t s . T h e s a m p l e w a s s t r a t i f i e d a c c o r d i n g t o s c h o o l a n d g r a d e .

I n a l l , 5 1 7 o f a p o t e n t i a l 7 3 0 s t u d e n t s c o m p l e t e d t h e s u r v e y , g i v i n g u s a n e a r l y 71X r e s p o n s e r a t e . B e c a u s e t h e r e s p o n s e - r a t e v a r i e d among s c h o o l s f r o m 5 0 t o

l o o % ,

N e a r l y 7 0 % . o f t h e s t u d e n t s who u s e d r u g s r e p o r t e d t h a t t h e y g o t t h e i r d r u g s f r o m s o m e o n e w i t h i n t h e i r own a g e g r o u p . T h i s a c c o u n t s f o r 9 5 % o f t h o s e s t u d e n t s r e p o r t i n g a s i n g l e s o u r c e o f d r u g s ( s e e p a g e 1 2 ) .

T h e f a c t t h a t s o many s t u d e n t s o b t a i n d r u g s f r o m w i t h i n t h e i r own p e e r g r o u p s h o w s u s t h a t t h e d i s t r i b u t i o n s y s t e m f o r d r u g s u s e d b y B e r k s h i r e C o u n t y h i g h s c h o o l s t u d e n t s i s c o n s t r u c t e d m o s t l y o f
