Pre-Kindergarten

Pre-kindergarten programs lay the foundation for lifelong learning. Four-year-olds enter Pre-kindergarten at varying stages of development, so instruction in the prekin- dergarten classroom recognizes and expands children’s interests, strengths, and abilities. Pre-kindergarten classes focus on:

Social and emotional development to foster a child’s sense of self, enhance his or her ability to make friends, and create openness to learning.

Physical development to strengthen large and small muscles, coordinate move- ment, and improve overall health and growth.

Creative expression and aesthetic development to foster a child’s appreciation for the arts — music, movement, dramatic play, and the visual arts.

Cognitive development to promote intellectual growth and school success.

When children use their language, literacy, mathematical and scientific thinking, and social studies cognitive skills to think, problem solve, and communicate, they are making sense of their world.

Generic Rubric for Benchmarking Performance Levels in All Subjects

Exceeds Standards

4

The student consistently meets and often exceeds the standard as it is described by the grade-level indicators on the report card and in benchmarked student work samples in the NYC Performance Standards. The student easily understands, applies and extends new concepts, processes and skill for the grade level.

Meets Standards

3

The student demonstrates proficiency in the vast majority of grade-level indica- tors. The student understands and applies the new concepts, processes and skills for the grade level with few, if any errors. Where errors occur, they do not interfere with making sense of the material. The student’s work is comparable to the student mod- els in the NYC Performance Standards.

Approaches Standards

2

The student is beginning to, and occasionally does, meet the standard as it is described by the grade-level indicators. The student is beginning to understand the new concepts, processes and skills for the grade-level, but produces work that con- tains several errors, some of which may indicate or result from conceptual misunder- standings.

Far Below Standards

1

The student is not meeting the standard as it is described by the indicators for this grade level. The student is working on key indicators that are one or more years below grade level, or is having significant difficulty grasping new concepts.

School Bullying

PS50 addresses the subject of “School Bullying” each academic year. In early Fall, the Guidance Counselor and the School Social Worker conduct a “School Bullying Prevention”

program to all grades on an individual basis to assist students in understanding the nature and impact of school bullying.

Through a two-part bullying DVD, strategies are present- ed and discussed for both the prevention of bullying, as well as, how to deal with bullying incidents. Students are taught how to recognize the many aspects/facets of bullying.

In addition to physical bullying, bullying can also be verbal and psychological in nature. Bullies may spread rumors/

gossip about others, write in appropriate words about classmates, intentionally exclude others and take or damage other’s

possesions. As “Cyberbullying” on the Internet has become a growing problem, even in elementary schools, the Guidance Coun- selor and the School Social Worker also introduce the meaning of

“Cyberbullying” to the students and how to deal/handle it. The students learn that “Cyberbullying” is sending anonymous mes- sages to others via computer, cell phones, email, etc.

After each classroom presentation, students are given the opportunity for a question and answer period concerning school bullying. If students have additional questions or concerns, they are provided with the ability to meet, on an individual basis, with the Guidance Counselor and/or School Social Worker.

PS 50 participates in and acquaints all students to the NYC Department of Education’s “Respect for All” program.

Child Abuse and Neglect

NYC has strict laws/regulations that mandate all schools to report suspicion of Child Abuse and Neglect. ALL school staff, includ- ing administration, teacher, related service providers, nurse, paraprofessionals, custodial staff, kitchen staff, etc. are required to call the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) when they have reason to suspect:

1. A child has been physically abused/maltreated

2. A child has been sexually abused, whether injuries are sustained or not

3. A child is neglected

4. A child evidences educational neglect (excessive absences and/or late nesses)

(9)

Homework Policy

Each teacher will assign math, reading and writing homework each night to reinforce skills that were taught during that day. Students are expected to complete their homework in entirety each night.

Homework is awarded a grade on each student’s re- port card. Students that fail to complete 3 or more assignments within the marking period will have their homework grade reduced. Homework needs to be completed and submitted on time in order to receive credit for the assignment.

Homework must be requested by 10:30AM, for an absentee, and picked up in the general office after 2:00 PM. If homework is not requested by 10:30AM, it will be provided when child returns to class.

If you take your children on vacation during the school year, homework will not be provided in advance. Students are responsible for the missed homework, which will be given to the student upon the student’s return.

Students will not be permitted back into the building after dismissal for any forgotten items.

Class Trips Policy

Prior to any class trip, a letter is sent home with each student describing the trip and explaining any fees involved. This note includes a permis- sion slip that must be signed by the parent/

guardian and returned to the teacher. No child will be allowed to attend a class trip without a signed permission slip.

The teacher will select parents for each class trip.

Siblings are not permitted to attend class trips.

Students will NOT be dismissed from a trip site unless the consent form specifically authorizes it.

If your child has a medical need, please reference the “Medical Needs” section

After School Activities

Any student who is not in attendance during the regular school day will not be permitted to attend recreational after-school activities and/or programs (sports, chess, dances, etc.)

Classroom (Birthday) Celebrations

All celebrations are to be kept to a minimum (no ice cream, candles, or goodie bags).

Birthday celebrations should be discussed and scheduled in ad- vance with your child’s classroom teacher via a note. Please make sure any goodies sent in are easily distributed (no cakes). Drinks should be in individual containers (no glass). All items should be placed on the table behind the

security officer, tagged with your child’s name and class number.

Ingredients should be clearly labeled.
