Volume 58, No. 9 Juiy/August 1985

What Is An Association?

The dictionary defines an Association as (1 ) “ An associating or state o f being associ

ated, a confederation, a fellowship” (2 ) “ A union o f persons in a society fo r some com m on purposes.” The word “ associate” is defined as a “ joining fo r a com m on purpose.”

I write on this subject because o f what I believe is a misunderstanding or at least a lack o f inform ation. As State Representative fo r almost fou r years, I have listened to statements and received some interesting letters from individuals regarding requests and situations.

I am the State Representative o f “ The Ohio Association o f R e g u la r B a p tist Churches.” Please note that it is not “ The Ohio Association o f Regular Baptist Pas

tors.” Similarly, the national group is titled “ The General Association o f Regular Baptist Churches.” The word “ Association” in each designates as the dictionary that there is a com m on purpose or fellowship o f the churches. But it is a “ fellowship o f churches.”

The By-laws o f the O.A.R.B.C. read as follow s under the Purpose article:

“ The purpose o f the Association shall be to provide fellowship for all Baptist churches which subscribe to the Constitution and Articles o f Faith therein con tained . . . ”

The key that must be emphasized is that we are a “ fellowship o f churches.” Then whatever is done is because o f the decision o f the churches. I am the State Represent

ative “ o f the churches.” An Association can only be and do what those churches officially a part agree to be or do. T o be a part o f the Association is the decision o f each individual church, n ot the pastor. Churches d o have pastors, but this is not an Association o f Pastors. Churches without pastors are still a part o f the Fellowship.

T o becom e a part o f the O.A.R.B.C. is a decision o f the church and n ot the pastor and vise versa, not to be a part o f the Fellowship or to withdraw from the Fellowship is a decision o f the church and not the pastor.

This might be a g ood place to stop and explain a further problem or lack o f informa

tion. Many believe that becom ing a part o f the General Association o f Regular Baptist Churches is automatically to also becom e a part o f the Ohio Association o f Regular Baptist Churches. This is not true. And, again, to becom e a part o f the Ohio Associa

tion o f Regular Baptist Churches does not automatically make the church a part o f the General Association o f Regular Baptist Churches. They are tw o separate Associa

tions and participation is by separate decision and application o f churches. (The Ohio Association is older than the General Association.) We have had Ohio churches that be

com e a part o f the Ohio Association but did not becom e a part o f the General Associa

tion and also churches that belong to the General Association that did not officially becom e a part o f the Ohio Association. I trust this is now clear to you w ho are read

ing.

In writing this article, it is not m y purpose to show reasons or historical beginnings o f Associations or o f the Ohio Association but to give you inform ation and thoughts that y o u may never have heard before.

An area o f real misunderstanding is the area o f pastors o f Ohio Association churches, candidates, etc. The Ohio Association o f Regular Baptist Churches (nor the State Representative) has n o jurisdiction over w ho pastors a church in the Ohio Association.

In fact, the Ohio Association has n o jurisdiction in any area over churches in the Ohio Association. It is a Fellowship designed fo r a purpose and agreed upon b y the churches that participate.

Recently I received (anonym ously) a letter from a member o f one o f our churches asking that I take to the Council o f 18 o f the General Association o f Regular Baptist Churches a situation they felt needed attention and some discussion and concern at the Annual Conference at Springfield, Illinois in June. This was in the area o f men who candidate in the churches. They were speaking that some candidates fo r pastor and assistant vacancies just d o not fit the “ Regular Baptist m old.” The tenor o f the letter was that some type o f screening should be done before a candidate gets to a church. Now let’ s look at this request.

First, let me point out that other than being a member o f a Regular Baptist church, I have n o more authority or entrance to the Council o f 18 than anyone else. Unless, o f course, Decause 1 know some o f them they would let me speak or give the informa

tion to them. With this, I remind y o u that I am responsible only to the Ohio churches thru our Council o f 12, elected b y the churches.

Secondly, there is n o vehicle or o ffice to “ screen” candidates w ho are invited to the churches. As State Representative, I can help churches that ask my help and endeavor to lead them in selection o f candidates but in the end, a church invites anyone to candidate fo r pastor, assistant, or youth that they desire to invite. Each church in the Ohio Association is independent and operates without anyone telling them what to do or who to invite. We are a Fellowship o f churches and not pastors. A Baptist church which is an official part o f the Ohio Association o f Regular Baptist Churches can have anyone they desire as their pastor and we can d o nothing about it. A possible exception might be if a pastor led the church to accept doctrine contrary to the O.A.R.B.C. Statement o f Faith. This church could be dismissed from the Association.

Each church in the O.A.R.B.C. has voted officially to becom e a part o f the Associa

tion. They can also as a congregation vote to withdraw from the Association. (And some have done this.)

The beauty o f an Association is that it is based on a purpose, is voluntary, and can only be directed and accomplish business by those who vote as' representatives o f the churches at an official meeting. With this statement, let’ s be clear. It is possible

Retirement Celebration- Madison Avenue-

Pastor and Mrs. Fred Hussey On Sunday, April 28th, the members and friends o f Madison Avenue Baptist Church, Cleveland, gathered for the Retirement Celebration which was held in honor o f Pastor and Mrs. T. Fred Hussey. This culminated 20 years o f ministry at Madison Avenue.

Pastor Hussey’ s ministry covers a span o f thirty-eight years in three churches, all o f which were in Ohio. Previous to Madison Avenue, Pastor Hussey served at Calvary

Baptist, Bellefontaine, and First Baptist, Niles. .

Participating in this special time were Mr. Bill Jones, form er member at Madison Avenue; Mrs. Evelyn Hussen, daughter-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hussey, son and daughter-in-law; Mr. Jack Acker, representing Westside Baptist Christian School;

Mr. Dan Edmunson, member o f Madison Avenue; Mr. Jess Burton, former member, assistant pastor, and Day School Administrator; and Dr, Allan Lewis, President Emeri

tus o f Baptist Mid-Missions. Closing the program was Elder, Mr. Vernon Jones.

A generous offering was presented to the Husseys as well as a new fishing rod and reel to Pastor Hussey (I wonder what that was for? Ed) and a gold engraved serving bow l and salt and pepper shakers to Mrs. Hussey.

Pastor and Mrs. Hussey will be residing at 14504 Birchwood Ave., Cleveland, Ohio.

The congregation o f Grace Baptist Church o f Canton, Ohio, celebrated the fifteenth anniversary o f the breaking o f ground for its present building May 12, 1985, in three special services. The congregation which was form ed in March 1967 rented temporary facilities until it moved to the present location in December 1970. Former pastors, Rev. Gerald Phipps and Rev. Martin Orman, returned to preach in the morning and evening worship services. Rev. Steve Lantz o f Brunswick presented a sacred music concert in the 3 :0 0 p.m. service, after which the mortgage was burned and a history o f the church in slides was shown.

<. 1 m | If®: $ I i \ w> i J". V i &■■... | gg ' ' ■■ :■ , s<| < iSg-Si S V '' His? H I1^ H i that pastors o f our churches speak for the church at times without the church having given him approval to speak or represent them by vote o f the church. Here, to o , the Council o f 12 is elected by the churches w ho submit names voted on by the church in an official congregational meeting.

Take this a step further. Most areas in Ohio have local fellowships. These are easy to accept as Pastors’ Fellowships. But in essence, they should be Area, Local Church Fellowships. Some o f our Area Fellowships operate as Church Fellowships and work together in the area o f youth rallies, activities, etc. This would be a true breakdown o f the Ohio Association with a purpose on the local level. Here, again, the Ohio Associa

tion has n o jurisdiction over the Local Area Fellowships. They are an end to them

selves. (Som e even have their own By-laws and all have officers.) In some areas, we have n o Local Regular Baptist Fellowship or even pastors w ho fellowship. (This is possibly a weakness in our Association.)

The original purpose o f the Association (in 1928) was to divest itself o f “ convention- ism.” And it did that well. Most o f y o u in the churches, including pastors, have not had the battle to withdraw from the convention system. Associations or Fellowships are fine if they define their purpose, maintain independence and autonom y, and keep people inform ed and provide a service, need, help, or active fellowship. Thus this article. It may need amplification, clarification, or lead to changes in the days to com e.

I trust this input is helpful.

The

Representative’s S p o t #

Having just returned from the Annual Conference o f the G.A.R.B.C., it is only natural that these meetings are fresh in our minds.

The conference held in Springfield, Illinois had as its theme this year, “ Kindling Revival Fires.” All w ho I have talked to have voiced the fact that this was one o f the best conferences. The program was well planned, disciplined, and each message mani

fested the direction o f the Holy Spirit.

As space permits, we will print outlines o f the messages and som e o f the resolutions passed at the conference. As part o f the fellowship, each should be interested in then- area o f emphasis. As always, I personally appreciated and was moved by the Chaplain’ s Hour. I feel this is unique and a number o f pastors mentioned to me that they were go

ing to suggest to their churches that they “ Adopt-a-Chaplain.” I trust that in future years, this hour might be placed at a difference time, even to an evening slot. The con ference had a minimum o f business and our ow n Dr. Pickering kept things moving as planned and scheduled.

As your Representative, I am always interested in the number o f our Ohio pastors who are able to attend due to the kindness o f their people. As near as I can tell (I really don’ t take roll), 71 or 72 Ohio pastors were in attendance. That was g ood but not quite as good as the Niagara Falls conference o f tw o years ago.

I know next year is 52 weeks away, but let me suggest that all o f our churches consider sending pastor and wife to the Annual G.A.R.B.C. Conference next year.

The 1986 Conference will be in Grand Rapids, Michigan. That is not a great distance.

Dear readers, if each church would set aside $10.00 a week, you would have $500.00 for pastor to attend conference. That should not be difficult fo r any size church. I know that $500.00 will cover the expenses and most pastors would not need to

“ skimp” with this amount given to them. How about giving this some thought?

But - Before the G.A.R.B.C. Conference o f 1986 will com e the O.A.R.B.C. Confer

ence in O ctober o f this year at Temple Baptist, Portsmouth. Y ou are going to send pastor and wife, aren’ t you ? Y ou have three months to set aside something for their going. Wouldn’ t it be nice to see all o f our 200 churches sending their pastors and wives to Portsmouth in October? This conference is a bit distant compared to other years. So, let’ s make the effort.

My wife and I appreciate the Council o f 12 sending us to the G.A.R.B.C. C onfer

ence this year.

I" '

I again deviate this month from a concrete, material look at our churches to another spiritual as well as outreach area.

Recently I have seen and heard o f people leaving our churches not for doctrinal reasons, but for lack o f programs or activities. This is a confusing, difficult situation.

Let me back up a bit. A few years ago, I had the opportunity and privilege to minist

er in some o f the beginning churches in Texas. Beginning a new church is a challenge but also a struggle. A t this time, northerners were moving to Texas by the hundreds.

Most o f them moved because o f jo b needs. Many were from our Regular Baptist churches in the North. This should have been a “ b oon ” to our beginning Regular Baptist churches in the area. Far from it. Few, very few o f these families ever settled in one o f our new, beginning churches. Why? For the lack o f programs. More than one pastor told o f the numerous phone calls from these new folks in the area. They were inquiring about the church. The questions always asked, “ What is your youth pro

gram?” as well as questions about other programs found in an established, thriving church. When the pastor would explain that this was a new, beginning work, the usual reply was, “ Well, we are looking for a church with a g ood youth program for our chil

dren. When you get going and have a youth program, possibly we’ ll consider coming.”

And so they begin attending a larger church, possibly even not Baptist or o f our con victions. This story could be repeated over and over again. If all the Regular Baptists w ho have moved to Texas from the North had landed in our churches, we would have some well established churches as well as a number o f additional churches in the area.

I am now hearing the same accounts from our Ohio churches. Pastors and people are telling me that fine families, interested and even members o f their church, are leaving because the church does not have a sufficient youth program fo r the children in the family.

This sounds reasonable and logical but I have a question or tw o. If families with young people leave a church to go to other churches that have such a program, how are beginning and smaller churches going to ever have any type o f youth program?

Where are the pioneers? Where are the parents w ho have young people w ho are will

ing to work with young people to begin such a needed program? I seem to be getting a picture that parents would like others to provide the program for their children but they are not willing to be the answer themselves.

I have n o quick answers or solutions. But all churches cannot have a “ razzle dazzle”

youth program. Just as all churches cannot have a superior musical program. And I know folks who have left churches because o f their interest in music but the church had no music program or even choir and they were not willing to be the spearhead to begin such a musical outreach.

I wonder if parents are not expecting to o much o f a church, or expect the church to be a substitute for family responsibility. D o young people suffer because we attend smaller, limited churches? Are our young people being nurtured that large churches are better than small churches? If this were true in the past, n o church would be where it is today. All things have a beginning. No program is ready made and in place with the right people without a beginning. Possibly the world’ s philosophy has really be

com e the foundation o f our thinking and our lives.

I am endeavoring to be careful because all o f my children are grown. But as pastor once o f a beginning church, I d o not believe m y children suffered because o f a lack o f programs. We did have people who were willing to make a beginning.

Possibly some o f our churches are not trying but, also, very possibly many o f our people should not be comparing. Why has G od placed you and your family in that small, struggling church? Are you the answer to a beginning need?

Well, maybe again I am meddling but how about giving this some thought? Maybe we need tw o kinds o f churches - one for adults only and one fo r families with children.

“ Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep— ”

My oldest daughter and her tw o boys are visiting with me as I’ m preparing this column. Its very precious to see how the Lord fit what was on my heart to write about and our conversations together.

One evening as we were talking about prayer, and how it had carried us through some difficult times, Debbie would reminisce o f one experience, then I another.

Oh it was good to see what God had done. She shared that now as a Mother, she knew first hand and valued highly what it meant to have children and grandchildren. She now has a heart set on continuing the same practice. In essence she was saying to me,

“ Mom, I’ ve quit just saying my prayers, I want G od’ s fellowship and need His help and protection fo r the boys.”

I can remember teaching her to pray, first I would say a word, then she would repeat that word, and so it went, as many o f you probably have done. And now it makes my heart full to hear her do the same with her two-year-old at meal and bed

time, (m y eyes to o ). But what makes the heart even fuller, is to know she’ s not just saying her prayers anymore. She has opened her heart to the Holy Spirit, and is really in conversation with God.

God is “ seeking such to worship Him” (John 4 :2 3 ) . . . Those w ho will recognize that we are praying to an Almighty G od ; the Creator o f the universe, Jehovah, A Holy and Loving Heavenly Father, The Precious Redeemer o f our souls, and so much m ore;

Those who will say, “ I can’ t, but He can.”

Many times prayer becomes an external form , an almost ritualistic performance.

May we ask G od to awaken us to “ quit just saying our prayers” , and enter in to the jo y o f Holy Spirit inspired worship o f our Great God.

PRAYER CHANGES EVERYTHING!

B. Recognize a person as a PERSON. They are another human being.

(1.) Look like you're happy toward them, be vibrant, show this by body ges

tures, facial expressions, posture, etc.

(2.) In some cases, touching can be used.

(3.) Remember the person is spending somewhere in eternity.

C. Show, demonstrate appropriate care and concern, showing them the fruits of the Spirit. Gal. 5 :2 2 (Take over that plate of cinnamon rolls, cookies, etc.) D. Develop awareness techniques - Jesus' examples.

(1.) To the blind man - " I am the light of the w orld"

(2.) To the hungry - " I am the bread o f life''

(3.) To the Samaritan Woman - " I am the living water"

(4.) Paul, I Cor. 9:19-23

A. Change our thinking. We cannot change our actions unless we change our attitudes, and we cannot change our attitudes unless we change our thinking.

Proverbs 23:7

B. Practice positive thought procedures. Phil. 4 :8 Be a positive person about reaching out.

C. Resisters to reaching out: Pride; Un-concern; Un-prepared; Don't have time;
