(2) Welcome to Cottey College! Whether this is your first visit to campus or your fifth, seeing the College your sisterhood owns is undoubtedly a special time for you. It’s certainly a special time for all of us on campus. So many amazing things have happened since the last Seminar that we are inspired to share the good news with all of you. We hope at the end of a very busy two-and-a-half days, you will leave this campus inspired to share the message of your college with your P.E.O. Sisters and prospective students you may know. We find ourselves inspired by the addition of new people in positions of leadership, by a spectacular new building on campus, and by future additions to our baccalaureate degrees and our athletic program. While the “new” can certainly be inspirational, what brings us to work every day and inspires us on a constant basis are the amazing young women who come to this campus and find their voices as learners, leaders, and citizens. You’ll have an opportunity to meet a few of these incredible women during your stay and see for yourself the difference you make in supporting Cottey College. Enjoy our fabulous food, explore our campus, meet our people, and prepare to be inspired as you learn about our College. (11) “Cottey is a dream come true.”. Cottey College & Virginia Alice Cottey “Cottey is a dream come true.” These words are often used when students and alumnae discuss the impact on their lives of the education they received at Cottey College. This phrase also describes the realization of a vision that came to the founder—Virginia Alice Cottey—when she was a young girl. It became her purpose in life. With courage and determination she devoted all of her energy to studying and preparing for the day she would found her college. The day came on September 8, 1884. After 1884, the most significant year in the history of Cottey College is 1927. At the Convention of Supreme Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood in Oklahoma City, Virginia Alice Cottey offered to her P.E.O. sisters the work of her life— Cottey College. She felt that P.E.O., with its high ideals and commitment to educating women, and Cottey, a college dedicated to preparing women for lives of intellectual engagement and thoughtful action, belonged together. At the Convention of International Chapter in 2017, the partnership between P.E.O. and Cottey College will celebrate 90 years of success. As Virginia Alice Cottey hoped, there has been mutual benefit. Cottey’s programs have thrived under the support of P.E.O., and owning a college has strengthened the education purposes of the Sisterhood. Since this partnership began, thousands of women have benefited—the students who have received an excellent education, as well as the P.E.O. members who helped them achieve their goals. “As we realize more and more the benevolent and gracious spirit of P.E.O., we feel that what has been accomplished is only a premonition of that which is to come when there shall go forth from our halls hundreds…prepared to make their contribution to the citizenship of the world.” Virginia Alice Cottey. Mission Cottey College, an independent liberal arts college, educates women to be contributing members of a global society through a challenging curriculum and a dynamic campus experience. In our diverse and supportive environment, women develop their potential for personal and professional lives of intellectual engagement and thoughtful action as learners, leaders, and citizens.. www.cottey.edu | 11. 10369.indd 11. 8/4/16 10:20 AM.

(14) About. Cottey College. COTTEY COLLEGE THEN AND NOW. Cottey College was founded by Virginia Alice Cottey in 1884 with the goal of ensuring a quality education for young women. Today, Cottey is the only college owned by a nonsectarian women’s organization, the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Alice wrote in the first catalog: “We have endeavored to make our course of study thoroughly practical and adapted to the needs of young women of the present day.” Cottey College continues to meet the educational needs of women in the twenty-first century by maintaining high academic standards and offering a rigorous liberal arts and sciences curriculum, enriched by opportunities for personal growth through cultural and residential experiences. Our Serenbetz Institute for Women’s Leadership, Social Responsibility and Global Awareness is acutely focused on the desires and needs of today’s female students. Cottey is located in Nevada, Missouri, only an hour north of Joplin and an hour and a half south of Kansas City and is easily accessible within minutes after exiting the interstate highway. The College provides transportation to and from the airport for students and frequently offers students transportation to nearby towns and celebrations.. THE VALUE OF WOMEN’S COLLEGES The Women’s College Coalition shares data about the value gained by female students attending women’s colleges. http://womenscolleges.org/ “Women flourish academically when faculty teaching styles are student-centered, and that’s what you get at a women’s college. More than at co-ed colleges, women’s colleges offer small classes with lively discussions, opportunities for collaboration, an emphasis on developing oral and written communications skills, and the chance for undergraduate research and internships. [Students] have lots of opportunities to lead and develop [their] leadership skills, all of which give [them] exactly the skills that employers want and that women’s college alumnae say prepares them exceptionally well for first jobs and career advancement.” •. 81% of students graduating from women’s college said their college was “extremely or very” effective in helping prepare them for their first job, compared to 65% at public universities.. •. 51% of students graduating from women’s colleges are almost twice as likely to complete graduate studies, compared to 27% at public universities.. •. 84% of women’s college students are more likely to graduate in four years or fewer, compared to 54% of students at public universities.. •. Women’s college students are able to observe women in top positions in their own institutions -- 90% of women’s college presidents are women, and 55% of faculty members are women.. •. Women attending women’s colleges are 1.5 times more likely to major in math, science, or pre-med than women at co-ed schools.. Research shows that many women learn best in single gender settings. These facts and other statistics attest to greater learning in leadership, persuasion, critical thinking, presentation skills, and other skills critical to their success. Cottey students attest to the same point. The “fit” must be right. Further, many students state that at Cottey, they find their voice; they learn that their thoughts and opinions count; that they can speak their mind and be respected, regardless of whether others agree; they are then confident and learn to not allow someone else to take that voice away.. COTTEY CAMPUS Cottey has 17 buildings on 80 acres. Cottey is debt-free and does not incur debt. We have an endowment from which a percentage goes into the operating budget annually. The majority of our budget, 94%, comes from that interest and from tuition and fees, as is common at most private institutions. BACCALAUREATE PROGRAMS The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees build on the core strengths of Cottey College: an academically challenging environment with leadership opportunities for women, including an international experience, in a close and energetic campus community. Each baccalaureate major includes the themes of women’s leadership, social responsibility, and global awareness in addition to majorspecific requirements. Thus, at Cottey baccalaureate programs are interdisciplinary. Cottey offers an international experience for sophomore-level students during the first week of spring break. Additionally, the baccalaureate programs in international business and in international relations require. an additional semester of study abroad to increase students’ global awareness and cultural competence. Students in these majors gain valuable experience knowing how to do business in another country and/or understand its political perspective from a personal and practical point of view. Each baccalaureate major program also includes a capstone project, typically completed during the final semester. In this project students apply the knowledge and experience gained in their first seven semesters to a research paper or project. Thus, baccalaureate students graduate from Cottey prepared for work as a professional in their field or for graduate school.. ASSOCIATE DEGREES Students pursuing associate degrees at Cottey have academic and leadership opportunities uncommon for the first two years of college. Some of the more striking are easy access to professors, special activities, leadership development, and a unique relationship between the freshmen-level and the sophomore-level students. At Cottey, regardless of level, students are provided opportunities both in and outside of the classroom to advance their personal, intellectual, and career goal development. For example, Cottey students have opportunities to •. explore ideas in small group settings. •. experience science directly with professors. •. attend field trips to such places as the •. Nelson-Atkins Art Museum in Kansas City and. •. Osage Prairie Conservation Area. •. experiment in state-of-the-art laboratory classrooms. •. complete an internship. •. practice research with the guidance of faculty. •. volunteer in the community and/or region (for example, participate in Join in for Joplin). Each associate degree requires the completion of at least 62 credit hours. Each baccalaureate degree requires at least 120 credit hours. All degrees require completion of a core curriculum and specific degree requirements. Students also have opportunities for elective hours, with the distribution of degree and elective hours varying among the degrees.. continued on page 18. www.cottey.edu | 17. 10369.indd 17. 8/4/16 10:20 AM.

(20) phi•lan•thro•py /fe’lanTHrepe/ The desire to promote the welfare of others expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.. Supporting Cottey A variety of ways to make a gift to Cottey College are available. While cash gifts are the most popular, other creative strategies may address your interest in supporting the College and provide you with increased income and tax benefits. The Institutional Advancement staff will work with you to discuss your personal philanthropic interests and areas at Cottey where you might wish to direct your gift. CURRENT GIFTS CASH GIFTS. Generally, a cash gift may be deducted from your federal income tax return in the year your gift is made as long as you itemize deductions. Actual savings from the deduction depend on your tax rate and other factors.. PLEDGES. Pledges are customarily made payable over a three- to five-year period. A pledge form is used to express the total commitment and chosen payment schedule. Payments on the pledge are deductible in the year they are made.. MATCHING GIFTS. Many employers have established matching gift plans that allow an employee’s charitable gift to be matched by the employer. Cottey’s institutional advancement staff can help you research this or you may able to access the information through your employer’s internal network or human relations office.. APPRECIATED PROPERTY. If property (i.e., stocks) has increased in value and you have owned it long enough for it to qualify as a longterm capital asset (12 months and a day), the best course may be to give it outright. A gift of appreciated property allows you to avoid the capital gains tax due if you were to sell the property. In most cases, you receive a deduction for the full value of the gift, subject to a limitation of 30 percent of your adjusted gross income. The excess beyond 30 percent can be carried forward for five years.. PROPERTY THAT HAS LOST VALUE. In the case of property that has decreased in value, you would benefit from selling the property, taking the loss for tax purposes and then contributing the cash. In this way you would receive a deduction for both the loss and the charitable gift.. REAL ESTATE. Gifts of real estate may be desirable subject to review and approval of Cottey’s Board of Trustees. It is also possible for you to make a gift of your personal residence, farm or vacation home, reserving the right to occupy it for as long as you or your spouse lives. This type of gift is known as a Life Estate Contract.. IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER. As of December 2015, the IRA Charitable Rollover, which was originally known as the “Katrina relief bill” was passed by Congress and signed into permanent law by the President, allowing taxpayers age 70-½ or older to transfer up to $100,000 annually from their IRA accounts directly to charity without first having to recognize the distribution as income.. 20 | www.cottey.edu. 10369.indd 20. 8/4/16 10:20 AM.
(21) Planned Gifts BEQUESTS A bequest can take any of the following forms: (1) a specific bequest of a dollar amount or of particular securities or other property; (2) a residuary bequest of all or a portion of your estate after the payment of specific amounts to other beneficiaries; (3) a contingent bequest to take effect only in the event that the primary beneficiaries under your will die before you; or (4) a testamentary trust, which takes the form of a Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust or Unitrust, the corpus of which will be paid to Cottey upon the death of the trust’s income beneficiary. Often a bequest can be arranged simply with the addition of a codicil amending your existing will.. CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY A gift annuity is a simple agreement between you and Cottey College to provide a fixed income for the lifetime(s) of one or two annuitants. The annual amount paid is determined by rates recommended by the American Council on Gift Annuities.. DEFERRED GIFT ANNUITY For younger donors, a deferred gift annuity offers increased income tax benefits. All of the features and benefits of a gift annuity are provided with a deferred gift annuity, although income is delayed until a future date you choose, often at retirement. The longer the time between the creation of a deferred gift annuity and the start of the payments, the greater your rate of return and the larger the income tax charitable deduction.. LIFE INCOME TRUSTS A life income trust is created by you and its assets consist only of the funds or property you contribute (generally $100,000 or more). Second, you set the amount of income you will receive rather than receiving the pro rata share of the pooled income fund. You can create a life income trust to provide either a fixed amount (called a Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust) or variable level of income (called a Charitable Remainder Unitrust).. WEALTH REPLACEMENT PLANS Wealth replacement planning is a method of protecting the inheritance interests of your heirs while still providing a significant gift to Cottey. You would contribute property or assets to Cottey and use the resulting tax savings to purchase a life insurance policy with your heirs as beneficiaries.. LIFE INSURANCE If you own a life insurance policy that you no longer need, you might consider making Cottey College the sole owner and beneficiary of the policy. You would receive an income tax deduction for roughly the cash surrender value of the policy. If the policy is not fully paid, you may consider continuing to pay the premiums and receive a tax deduction for the annual premium amount. Life insurance may also be used to benefit heirs by replacing the value of assets gifted to Cottey College (see Wealth Replacement Plans).. Conclusion The above information is not exhaustive and is meant to stimulate further inquiry into ways that you can support your College. When contemplating a special gift to Cottey, it is a good idea to notify the Office of Institutional Advancement of your intentions. It is expected that each donor will consult his or her financial advisor before finalizing a major gift.. www.cottey.edu | 21. 10369.indd 21. 8/4/16 10:20 AM.
(22) Leadership E ducation and Development at Cottey College. A. t Cottey College, we believe there is a leader in everyone. The Helen and George Washburn Center for Women’s Leadership, the Serenbetz Institute for Women’s Leadership, Social Responsibility, and Global Awareness, and the Campus Activities Office sponsor leadership education and development activities every year. SIX CORE BELIEFS GUIDE OUR COMMITMENT TO LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: 1. Leadership can be learned. . 2. Leadership is not positional and . can be practiced by any member of a team.. 3. Leadership development and . education can benefit everyone.. 4. Leadership includes an ethical . component designed to benefit the greater good.. 5. Leadership is a process that each woman should understand for herself.. 6. Leadership is a relational process that involves both leaders and collaborators.. Open to all students, Cottey offers two certificate programs to formalize and structure students’ leadership. experiences and learning. LEO (Leadership, Experiences, Opportunity) is a four-level certification program for Cottey students to receive recognition and certification for leadership efforts on campus. Through LEO, students focus on the leadership aspects of activities and organizations in which they are already involved; attend interactive workshops; participate in special events that include networking dinners, leadership field trips, and cultural activities; and interact with women leaders on campus and in the community. The Certificate in Organizational Leadership (COL) is designed to provide an opportunity for students to study the relevant theoretical and academic aspects of leadership while developing individual leadership capacity. The COL is intended to compliment the LEO program by combining academic coursework with experiential and co-curricular aspects that result in a tangible qualification reflected on the student’s official transcript. To broaden the scope of leadership learning, the Distinguished Speaker’s Series and Leader-in-Residence programs expose all Cottey students to women leaders who have achieved success in their fields. These women come from various backgrounds including professions as musicians, business and social entrepreneurs, artists, authors, and historians. To incorporate additional leadership education and development across disciplines, students and faculty can apply for leadership grants to support undergraduate research, immersions, and internships. Grant applications must relate to one of the three threads of a Cottey education: women’s leadership, social responsibility, or global awareness.. 22 | www.cottey.edu. 10369.indd 22. 8/4/16 10:20 AM.
