where.” Duane shot make-believe arrows across the void and they started going to- gether, as it was called back then.
They lived in Illinois, where they raised two children, and in Pennsylvania. P.J.
taught music to all grades in both states.
She wrote and the kids performed op- erettas. She loved them as they all loved her. Her other claim to fame was her beau- tiful voice. She did the soprano solo work with chorus and orchestra performing or- atorios, scripture based music like Han- del’s Messiah, both in Chicago and Philadelphia.
After retirement, P.J. and Duane moved back to Holland, as so many of their college friends did, to relive some of the fond mem- ories of their college days. Trudy and Gordy, who were in the spot- light two issues ago, also returned to Holland.
P.J. and Trudy were roommates at Hope and were bridesmaids in each other’s weddings.
So life at Appledorn South is becoming a family affair.
Phyllis Jeanne B.
Phyllis Jeanne , aka P.J., has been with us since September 2018. An even more important date for her occurred on June 10th, when she and her husband cele- brated their 71st wedding anniversary. He lives at Appledorn West, but they can soon spend time together after a year of Covid separation. When asked for the secret of a long marriage, P.J. would answer, “Just be good to each other.”
P.J. grew up in Brooklyn, NY, but her mother would not permit her to pick up that distinguishing accent. As a member of the New Brooklyn Reformed Church her parents were very familiar with Hope College, so she enrolled
there as a freshmen in 1946. P.J. was a music major and was recruited to sing with the Madri- gal Group, a chorus of eight voices singing old English ballads, where she met her husband- to-be. She as a soprano and Duane as a bass stood on opposite ends of the grand piano dur- ing rehearsal. They were singing “I shot an Arrow into the Air, it fell to earth I know not

Amanda is currently on summer break, and will return to school in the fall at
“Cedarville University,” which is a smaller university located in southern Ohio. There she studies nursing and psychology and plans to utilize her education in the geri- atric field upon obtaining her degree. She reports that working here at South has provided her with her first paying job in the field, however, she has had a variety of clin- ically related training experiences which as- sisted her with pursing her current role as a med tech here, “I enjoy the resident interactions the most,” she reported to this author.
Amanda, welcome to the team! Thank you for bringing your experi- ence and education to our South family it is greatly appreciated!

Administrator Notes
Dear Residents, Families, Staff, and Friends of Appledorn South;
In the last two notes I wrote about the use of games and pictures to trigger memories and lead con- versation. I want to again continue that this month with the idea of the sense of smell. Smells are one of the most powerful triggers of memory. I was reminded of this during a conversation I had with our Chef. He was introducing me to an herb and recounted the story of being in culinary school and working with this herb and it taking him back to moment in his childhood.
Maybe for you it is the smell of a flower or fresh baked goods or a specific perfume/cologne. One smell that triggers memories for me is the smell of wood chips. Growing up our house was heated with wood and I spent many hours with my dad and brother gath- ering, cutting, and splitting wood. Another trigger is lilac, my wife’s favorite flower. Anytime I smell lilac it makes me think of her and her love for the flower and sent.
So next time you visit bring some fresh baked cookies or cut flowers. Bring in a hot tea or coffee and let the aroma unlock some memories and trigger con- versation.
Thanks,
Jason
