German Packaging Award 2021

The packaging industry is and will remain a highly innovative and creative industry. As the organizer of the largest European exhibition for everything to do with packaging, we were not only pleased about the large number of innovations submitted, which was around 25 percent higher than the previous year.

The quality of the solutions is also remarkable.

Our 24-person jury was very busy reviewing every submission. At the end there are well-deserved winners, a total of 52 innovations from six countries spread over ten competition categories. Among the winners are consumers, commerce, trade, industry and the environment. This shows that the innovations in the industry bring even more

convenience, shopping experience, efficiency, profitability and sustainability. They are high- tech and creative, find new ways and equip us impressively for the challenges of the time.

On behalf of our patron, the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, we would like to thank all participants for their excellent performance. Your successful and tireless innovation work underlines the strength and creativity of the companies in our industry. It is only thanks to this work that our packaging is fit for the challenges of today and tomorrow - and thus safeguards the livelihoods of people, companies and the environment.

We are not aware of any other award that has such a broad, independent and non-partisan jury of experts. We are proud of that. Because transparency, fair play and the competence of the jurors are the basis of a high-quality and meaningful competition.

Our 2021 jury comprised experts from industry, agencies, branded companies, retailers, research institutes and universities. During a two-day meeting, all submissions were thoroughly checked and discussed at length.

We thank you very much for the extremely competent and committed work!

The Mibelle Group recognized the potential of the technology for the consumer goods market at an early stage and, with its expertise and commitment, made it possible to use it in this area. A process for converting CO2 into ethanol was developed, which in turn forms the basis for many sustainable plastics. This opens up the

possibility of crude oil-free plastics production, which at the same time enables the climate-damaging CO2 in the atmosphere to be reduced. In addition, the plastic obtained from it is recyclable. The jury is

• The award is for a patented packaging solution for shipping boxes, implemented in a highly flexible packaging system. The system determines the packaging volume based on the geometry of the packaged goods, selects the suitable corrugated board blank from a stock of different sizes, cuts,

Laminating boxes with high-quality decorative materials is not a new process, but KOLBUS has implemented it in a format- flexible way. Format parts have been substituted and thus set-up times

perforates and creases it individually, sets up the blank, fills and seals them. The following qualities are particularly noteworthy:

• Individual pack size with minimised filling volume, which removes the need for “padding”

with cushioning material

• Besides the main effect of saving padding proper cooling. This leads

to less packaging material used, optimises the logistics and packaging process and demonstrates to the customer that HelloFresh also takes a responsible approach to material resources.

material, transport volume and – depending on the dimensioning and production of the initial blanks (not included) – packaging material can also be saved

• Suitable for almost any combination of different types of piece goods within a pack, including less robust ones

• Very high rigidity and

reduced or eliminated. The adjustable work elements arranged in a modified process sequence make it possible to process a very large format range with a single machine without changing format parts,

thus robustness due to the packaging construction. This does not have to come primarily from the corrugated board so offers further savings potential, high

mechanical protection and “reusability” for return shipments.

thus offering flexibility in different job structures.

The high quality required

is maintained, even when

laminating sharp edges.

Julia Parlow & Tim Winkler An unusually-shaped jar

for baby food is presented here. One feature is the lack of the usual shoulder at the top of the glass, which means that the jar can be completely

emptied using a spoon.

The jury found the holistic approach to the complex topic and the use of glass, as well as the general idea and implementation, to be particularly noteworthy.

New times call for new ways. Ways of shipping. In these times of increased online retail and a torrent of parcels as well as returns, new compact and resource-saving

This modified form of cigarette packaging can counter the problem of the environmental impact of discarded cigarette butts.

Cigarette butts can be collected in an extra pull- out compartment when on the move to be disposed of

later at home. A slipcover for conventional cigarette packs was developed under the motto “A little change can make a big difference”, allowing the existing distribution channels to be retained.

• In the continuing quest to combine the benefits of paper with attractive shaping options, KOCH Pac-Systeme continues to push the boundaries towards sophisticated geometries and high quality appeal. The following features are particularly noteworthy:

• Purely paper-based packaging can be

formed in new geometry parameters (alternating convex and concave geometries, small radii, steep wall angles)

• Single-step 3D forming

• Adjustable process parameters make it possible to adapt to different material properties and geometries.

approaches are needed.

REPOST creates a reusable parcel system in an elegant and contemporary way with durable material that can be returned through the letterbox.

The consumer sees the products thanks to the glass packaging inside and the viewing window cut-out at the bottom. The specially designed plastic lid gives a unique feel with its three-dimensional

design and picks up the element of the fondant product, e.g. icing. The jar has a great recognition value at the POS and a unique selling proposition.

It can be recycled as a

storage jar.
