non-competitive keywords that have little to no search volume. That’s why you are con-stantly receiving phone calls from SEO com-panies guaranteeing your page one place-ment for a specific keyword. In many cases It is usually a keyword that is rarely searched. What’s the point? It’s kind of like fishing in a swimming pool; you are never going to catch anything.
Another problem with many SEO campaigns is they have no plan in place. You build a website, fill it with content, and hope that your keywords are effectively searched. About six months ago Google released a major algorythmic update called Humming-bird. Hummingbird was designed to rank sites that are creating great content. What they want to avoid is companies that are filling their sites with keywords to game the system. This is looked upon as spam in the eyes of the search engines and often results in very short periods of success, and the possiblity of being sandboxed by Google.
Today, search engine advertising is all about proper content marketing. Developing the best content generally gets you better rank-ings over time. The way people search to-day is actually very different from the way the is was done just a few short years ago. Today we are finding more search results with what is referred to as long tail keywords. Long tailkey words are multiple keywords put together to form sentences, questions, or phrases, and in the case of the plumbing industry descriptions of a problem with refer-ence to the city a person lives in.
Another thing to think about is that today more people are searching for your com-pany by using mobile phones, tablets, and voice commands, making the long tail state-ments far more important.
With that said, is it still important to rank for single keywords? The answer is yes: Keyword research is still very important.
You need to know the right keywords to rank for so you can build them into your content. There is no way to target specific long tail keywords based on volume because every long tail keyword is different.
When you look at a Google Analytics report you will see several hundred long tail key-words that people used to find your website, but next to that keyword you will usually see a small number like 1 or 2 which indicates a low search volume. In fact if you did any keyword research you would find zero results on the long tail, because the volume is non existent. That’s because everyone searches differenly. Very few long tail searches are the same.
Keyword research is important because, lets face it, there are still people that-search city+plumber, and once you have city+plumber in your content, long tail search is likely to come out of that.

As you can see it is very important to know that San Jose Plumber is a very important keyword. However, the way people search to find that keyword.
Another thing to remember is that you want to rank for the multiple cites you service, often referred to as sub cities. In using Miami, Florida as an example you would want to rank for North and South Miami, as well as other cities close by. Keeping in mind some cities like South Miami may not have a very large search volume. Spending your time and effort to rank for a keyword that may not generate any searches is a waste of time and resources.

This could be a sale that is most likley 30 to 60 days away. This is why having great content on your website is so important.
