Guide to Intel Rapid Storage

Ov e r v ie w

I nt el® Rapid St orage Technology prov ides new levels of prot ect ion, per for m ance, and ex pandabilit y for desk t op and m obile plat form s. Whet her using one or m ult iple har d dr ives, user s can t ake advant age of enhanced per form ance and low er pow er consum pt ion. When using m or e t han one dr ive, t he user can have addit ional prot ect ion against dat a loss in t he event of a hard drive failure.

St ar t ing w it h ver sion 9.5, a brand new user int er face m akes cr eat ing and m anaging your st orage sim ple and int uit ive. Com bined w it h I nt el® Rapid Recover Technology, set t ing up dat a pr ot ect ion can be accom plished easily w it h an ext er nal dr ive.

I nt el Rapid St orage Technology can also im pr ove t he per form ance of disk int ensive ret rieval applicat ions such as edit ing hom e v ideo. By com bining from t w o t o six drives in a RAI D 0 configurat ion, dat a can be accessed on each dr ive sim ult aneously, speeding up response t im e on dat a- int ensive applicat ions. Also, due t o drive load balancing, even syst em s w it h RAI D 1 can t ake advant age of fast er boot t im es and dat a r eads.

I nt el Rapid St orage Technology prov ides benefit s t o users of a single drive as w ell. Thr ough AHCI, st orage per for m ance is im pr oved t hr ough Nat ive Com m and Queuing ( NCQ) . AHCI also delivers longer bat t ery life w it h Link Pow er Managem ent ( LPM) , w hich can reduce t he pow er consum pt ion of t he chipset and Ser ial ATA ( SATA) hard drive.

I n st a lla t ion I n st r u ct ion s

1. Dow nload t he I nt el Rapid St orage Technology soft w are from I nt el w ebsit e. Save t he file t o a known locat ion on your com put er 's har d dr iv e.

2. Locat e t he file on y our hard driv e and double- click it .

3. Click Con t in u e ( if needed) t o launch t he inst allat ion pr ogr am . 4. Click N e x t at t he Welcom e scr een.

5. Click N e x t .

6. Read t he license agreem ent and click Ye s t o accept t he t erm s and cont inue.

7. Click N e x t . The applicat ion files w ill now be inst alled.

Cr e a t e a RAI D Ar r a y

1. Double- click “ I nt el Rapid St or age Technology ” icon, t hen below m ain screen appear s.

2. Click t he “ Cr eat e” icon t o cr eat e a RAI D ar r ay. Her e w e t ake RAI D 1 for exam ple.

3. I n “ Select Volum e Ty pe” , click “ Real- t im e dat a prot ect ion ( RAI D 1) ” . Click “ Nex t ” .

4. I n “ Configure Volum e” , you need t o key- in t he Volum e Nam e w it h 1- 16 let t er s, select t he RAI D disks, and t hen specify t he v olum e size. Click “ Nex t ” .

5. I n “ Confir m Volum e Creat ion” , you m ay r eview t he select ed configurat ion. Then click “ Creat e Volum e” .

6. The v olum e is creat ed successfully . But y ou st ill need t o part it ion y our new volum e by using Window s Desk Managem ent befor e adding any dat a. Click “ OK” .

7. You w ill see t he current st at us.

8. I n Windows Desk Managem ent , you need t o init ialize a disk before Logical Disk Managem ent can access it . Click “ OK” .

9. Right - click on Disk 0, click “ New Sim ple Volum e” .

10. Then follow t he inst ruct ions on t he New Sim ple Volum e Wizard.

11. Finally you can st ar t t o use RAI D 1 funct ion.

I n or der t o inst all an operat ing syst em ont o a RAI D volum e, t he RAI D opt ion m ust be enabled in t he syst em BI OS, a RAI D volum e m ust be creat ed, and t he F6 inst allat ion m et hod m ust be used t o load t he I nt el® Rapid St orage

Technology driver dur ing operat ing syst em set up.

The F6 inst allat ion m et hod is not requir ed for Micr osoft Window s Vist a* or N ot e

Micr osoft Window s 7* .

En a ble RAI D in Sy st e m BI OS

Use t he inst ruct ions included w it h your m ot herboard t o enable RAI D in t he sy st em BI OS.

1. Click F2 or D e le t e t o ent er t he BI OS Set up progr am aft er t he Pow er - On- Self- Test ( POST) m em or y t est begins.

2. Enet r t he Adva n ce d m enu.

3. Click t he St or a ge Con figu r a t ion m enu.

4. Sw it ch t he SATA Ope r a t ion M ode opt ion t o RAI D.

5. Click F1 0 t o save t he BI OS set t ings and exit t he BI OS Set up pr ogr am .

Cr e a t e a RAI D V olu m e

Use t he follow ing st eps t o cr eat e a RAI D volum e.

1. When t he I nt el Rapid St orage Technology opt ion ROM st at us scr een appear s dur ing POST, pr ess Ct r l and i at t he sam e t im e t o ent er t he opt ion ROM user int erface.

2. Select 1 : Cr e a t e RAI D V olu m e and pr ess En t e r .

3. Use t he up or dow n arrow k eys t o select t he RAI D lev el and press En t e r . 4. Unless you have select ed RAI D 1, use t he up or dow n ar r ow keys t o select

t he st r ip size and pr ess En t e r .

5. Pr ess En t e r t o select t he physical disks.

6. Select t he appropriat e num ber of hard driv es by using t he up or down arrow k ey s t o scroll t hrough t he list of hard driv es and press Spa ce t o select t he dr ive. When finished press En t e r .

7. Select t he volum e size and press En t e r . 8. Pr ess En t e r t o cr eat e t he volum e.

9. At t he pr om pt pr ess Y t o confirm volum e creat ion. 10. Select 4 : Ex it and pr ess En t e r .

11. Pr ess Y t o confirm your exit .

Perform t he follow ing st eps t o inst all t he I nt el Rapid St orage Technology driv er dur ing operat ing syst em set up:

1. Pr ess F6 w hen you see a m essage in t he st at us line t hat says, Pr ess F6 if you need t o inst all a t hir d par t y SCSI or RAI D driver. This m essage appear s at t he beginning of Window s XP* set up ( dur ing t ext - m ode phase) .

Not hing w ill happen im m ediat ely aft er pressing F6. Set up w ill t em porarily cont inue loading driv er s. You w ill t hen be pr om pt ed N ot e

w it h a scr een asking you t o load suppor t for m ass st or age device( s) .

2. Pr ess S t o Spe cify Addit ion a l D e v ice .

3. When you see a prom pt t hat says, Please inser t t he disk labeled

Manufact urer - supplied har dw ar e suppor t disk int o Dr ive A: , inser t ; a floppy disk cont aining t he follow ing files: I AAHCI .I NF, I AAHCI .CAT, I ASTOR.I NF, I ASTOR.CAT, I ASTOR.SYS, and TXTSETUP.OEM.

Use t he Floppy Configurat ion Ut ilit y t o cr eat e a floppy disk w it h t he N ot e

necessar y files.

4. Pr ess En t e r .

5. Select y our cont roller fr om t he list of av ailable SCSI adapt ers. Use t he up and dow n arrow k ey s t o scroll t hrough t he list as all cont rollers m ay not be visible.

6. Pr ess En t e r t o confir m your cont r oller and cont inue. At t his point , y ou hav e successfully inst alled t he driv er and Window s set up should cont inue. Leav e

t he floppy disk in t he floppy dr iv e unt il t he syst em r eboot s. Window s set up w ill need t o copy t he files again fr om t he floppy t o t he Window s inst allat ion folders. Once Window s set up has copied t hese files again, rem ov e t he floppy disk so t hat Window s set up can r eboot as needed.

7. Dur ing Window s set up, cr eat e a par t it ion and file syst em on t he RAI D v olum e as you w ould on any phy sical disk .

I f you w ish t o use t he I nt el Rapid St or age Technology user int erface in Window s, you w ill need t o inst all I nt el Rapid St orage Technology by N ot e

r unning t he Set up.exe process aft er t hese st eps have been com plet ed and t he oper at ing syst em has been successfully inst alled.

W h a t if I w a n t t o u se RAI D bu t m y OS is a lr e a dy in st a lle d?

I f y our operat ing sy st em is already inst alled, y ou can st ill use RAI D as long as t he follow ing condit ions are m et :

• Your sy st em has a RAI D I / O cont roller hub ( I CH) .

I f y our sy st em does not hav e a RAI D I CH, y ou w ill not be able t o use RAI D N ot e

w it hout inst alling a t hird- part y RAI D cont roller card.

• Your RAI D cont roller is enabled.

I f y our RAI D cont roller is not enabled, enabling t he RAI D cont roller is not r ecom m ended or suppor t ed w hen a SATA har d dr ive is t he boot W a r n in g dr ive. Enabling t he RAI D cont r oller m ay cause an im m ediat e blue

scr een w it h an 0x0000007b er r or code, follow ed by a r eboot . I f you w ish t o enable it , y ou w ill need t o reinst all t he operat ing sy st em .

I f bot h of t he above condit ions ar e m et , use t he follow ing st eps t o cr eat e a RAI D volum e.

1. I nst all I nt el® Rapid St or age Technology.

2. Tur n off t he syst em and inst all one or m ore addit ional har d driv es. 3. Tur n on t he syst em .

4. Use t he I nt el Rapid St orage Technology user int er face t o cr eat e a RAI D volum e. You can m igr at e t he dat a from a single har d dr iv e on your syst em t o a RAI D volum e t hat includes t hat har d dr ive plus t he new ly added hard dr ive( s) . You can also creat e a new RAI D volum e using t he new ly added har d dr ives.

I n order t o inst all an operat ing sy st em ont o a single Serial ATA hard driv e w hen t he sy st em is in RAI D m ode or AHCI m ode, t he F6 inst allat ion m et hod m ust be used t o load t he I nt el® Rapid St orage Technology dr iver dur ing oper at ing syst em

inst allat ion.

You do not need t o use t he F6 inst allat ion m et hod t o inst all a RAI D N ot e dr iver on Micr osoft Window s Vist a* and Microsoft Window s 7* because

I nt el prov ided a RAI D driv er as part of t he final pack age.

Use t he follow ing st eps t o inst all t he I nt el® Rapid St orage Technology driv er using t he F6 inst allat ion m et hod.

Perform t he follow ing st eps in order t o inst all t he RAI D or AHCI driv er via unat t ended inst all.

1. Ext r act t he I AAHCI .I NF, I AAHCI .CAT, I ASTOR.I NF, I ASTOR.CAT, I ASTOR.SYS, and TXTSETUP.OEM files fr om t he set up files.

To ext r act t hese files, r un t he ex ecut able ( e.g. I ATA88ENU.EXE for I nt el® Mat rix St orage Manager v ersion 8.8) w it h t he follow ing com m and line opt ions: - A - A - PC: \ < pat h> , as described in t he Advanced I nst allat ion I nst r uct ions sect ion of t he README.TXT.
