Open Access undergraduate programs are those whose entry is based on applicants meeting prerequisite study scores rather than a minimum Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). For current Year 12 students this means that, provided you have met the prerequisites of your chosen program of study, your achieved ATAR is not a factor in our decision to offer a place; therefore, your study scores will indicate your eligibility for a place when you receive your school results in December and you will receive a provisional offer before 25 December if you meet the prerequisites.

Open Access eligible programs are indicated throughout this booklet. For information about Open Access visit federation.edu.au/openaccess

Diploma of

Early Childhood

Education and

Care

I love being around children and watching them develop. They have so many questions, and a great imagination. The Diploma of Children’s Services helped me to understand their development and how children grow and learn.

As soon as I came to Open Day and saw the campus, I knew I wanted to study here. We did practical placement which I loved. We had two focus students that we had to observe, and plan experiences for them.

After completing the Diploma I have now gone on to study the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood). Studying at TAFE first was a great pathway to this degree. It really prepared me well and I already had a good understanding of children and their behaviours, rather than starting straight from high school. The Diploma also gave me quite a few credits towards the degree, which means I didn’t have to undertake all of the first year courses again.

A carer. A leader. A person of comfort and trust.

With this diploma, you’ll develop the skills and knowledge you need to provide programs and care for children from birth to 12 years old. As a qualified early childhood

professional, you can manage and motivate other staff and volunteers put into practice programs you’ve created. During this program, you will spend much of your time in children’s services, watching and learning from other professionals.

Once you graduate, you can work in pre-school centres, family day care centres and more. You can take this program full-time or part-time and study on campus or through flexible delivery methods. You can even go on to study our Bachelor of Education (Birth – Year 6) degree.

Career Opportunities

• Early childhood educators/ room leaders in centre-based education and care environments such as long day care

• Positions in family day care centres

• Assisting the Bachelor educator in pre-school centres and settings, occasional care schemes and room leaders in out of school hours programs

• As aides with children with additional needs delivering an activity based three year kinder program

Further Study Options

• Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)

• Bachelor of Education (Birth –Year 6)

Bachelor of

Education

(Birth–Year 6)

If you love working with children, want to help them succeed

and be a mentor and advocate for them, we want you in this

degree.

Childcare, kindergarten and primary school teachers play a huge role in the confidence and development of children. Over four years, you’ll learn to be a competent teacher in settings that range from pre-schools through to year 6. You’ll get plenty of experience in schools and programs throughout your degree, which will help you to perfect your skills and grow your understanding of what it takes to be a teacher. You may choose to work with children with disabilities or support those who are disengaged with learning. Your subjects range from ‘teacher identity’ to ‘diversity: children, families and communities’, and from ‘individual expression: art, movement and music’ to ‘the inclusive teacher’. You’ll learn exactly what type of teacher you are and how to use your unique skills for the benefit of your students.

This is a modified program to suit your lifestyle, with a combination of online study and face to face workshops.

Students can choose their entry point, and tailor their studies to finish in 3 or 4 years, depending on previous qualifications.

Career Opportunities

Successful completion of this program prepares individuals to work as a preschool, kindergarten and primary school teacher.

Cassandra Hill

Student — Primary Education

I attended the Gippsland Education Precinct at school and wasn’t certain about what area to choose for a degree, so when applying for university I listed courses that interested me. I was offered a Bachelor of Primary Education place and deferred for a year, later deciding that education was definitely what I wanted to study. Like that ‘light bulb’ moment children get when learning!

The favourite thing about my course is placement as it puts everything you learn into perspective. I chose to become a student ambassador at university as I get to help local students realize, from a current student’s perspective, that university is an amazing experience. The biggest difference between high-school and university is that you have to be an independent learner and self-motivated. Advice I would give my younger self whilst completing VCE is to not stress the small stuff, it all works out in the end.

From a very young age, I had always dreamed of becoming a classroom teacher. Coming from a small regional town and being the first child in my family to commit to tertiary studies was rather daunting. Despite this, my transition from High School to university life was a breeze. Having lecturers and tutors that know you by name has given me a sense of belonging at this university.

Living at the residence on campus is extremely convenient, as all my classes are only a short 5-minute walk. Having my course and accommodation fully organized has made me extremely excited about new opportunities that may arise.
