March 2021 _______________

What can you see on the cover of this book?

Use a ruler to label the different features. This year, World Book Day is on Thursday 4th March.

All week, we’ll be doing activities around a chosen author. This year, Year Two have chosen the author Oliver Jeffers. To begin, we are going to look at a book called ‘Stuck’ which is both written and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers.

Take a look at the cover of the book. What do you think this book might be about?

Today you’re going to write a prediction explaining what you think might happen and why.

Think about what is happening on the cover and how this might be part of the story.

(2)

Think about the title of the story. What does ‘stuck’ mean? Before you make your prediction, think about these questions.

- Who is the boy? - Where is the boy?

- What is the boy looking at?

- Why is the title written like that? - What is the front cover telling us? - What is going to happen in the story?

Using your ideas, write your prediction in full sentences. You could use your answers to the questions above to help you structure your prediction. Remember to include ‘because’ when explaining what might happen and why.

Here is the tree with only the kite and shoe stuck in it.

Can you plan a list of items that get increasingly bigger? In the above video, Oliver Jeffers explains some of the other items that he was planning for Floyd to throw into the tree but didn’t make it into the final story.

He says that the first thing he did when planning for this story was to think of a list of items, each one bigger than the one before it.

In the story, Floyd sends 22 items into the tree before the kite comes back down again.

Can you create a list of items that Floyd could throw into the tree? Be creative and try not to repeat any items already used in the story.

Creating ideas

Watch Oliver Jeffers explain what didn’t make the final cut of the story.
