Statement of Philosophy
Co-curricular activities are those voluntary activities, which act as an extension of the classroom and serve to enhance the motivation and experience of the student. They are an integral and valuable part of the student's school experience and are intended to expand student life, learning and development. Winning is not the final measurement of success in co-curricular activities at Sauk Prairie Middle School. Positive participation is the goal. We strive for positive participation in preparation, in presentation, in sportsmanship and in the effort of our participants. We are committed to providing the best possible coaches and advisors. In return, we ask students and parents to make the level of commitment necessary to achieve success.
Non-Discrimination Statement
Sauk Prairie School District does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital status, parental status, sexual orientation, sex, (including transgender status, change of sex or gender identity), or physical, mental, emotional, or learning disability ("Protected Classes") in any of its student program and activities.
Individuals requiring the assistance of auxiliary aids or special accommodations because of a disability are asked to contact the High School office at 643-5900 at least twenty-four hours prior to the event to arrange for appropriate accommodations.
The full Nondiscrimination and Access to Equal Educational Opportunity Board Policy 2260 can be found at saukprairieschools.org > School Board > Board Policies.

1. The function of the coach/advisor is to properly educate students through participation in co-curricular activities. The coach/advisor is charged with looking after the welfare of each participant at all times.
2. The coach/advisor must be aware that he or she has a tremendous influence in the education of the co-curricular participant.
3. The coach/advisor should constantly uphold the honor and dignity of the profession. In all personal contact with the co-curricular participant, officials, activity directors, school administrators, the media, and the public the coach/advisor shall strive to set an example of the highest ethical and moral conduct.
4. The coach/advisor will make students' health and safety paramount throughout the season. The coach/advisor should seek the advice of the student's physician/athletic trainer in questionable cases. 5. The coach/advisor will establish guidelines prior to the season. These guidelines, after being
approved by the activities director, will be presented in written and oral form prior to the season. 6. The coach/advisor shall promote the entire co-curricular program of the school district and direct his or her program in harmony with the total school program.

12. The coach/advisor will support students’ academic progress by regularly monitoring progress reports, and will be flexible in allowing students to meet with teachers after school if necessary.

Co-Curricular Participants
1. Students will support other participants by attending all practice sessions and contests/performances unless previously excused by the coach/advisor due to illness, injury or academic reasons.
2. Students will attend school and classes daily during the school year unless excused. Students are expected to be in class at the start of the school day. If the student is tardy or absent following a competition or performance more than two times within a season, the activities director in conjunction with the coach/advisor could declare the student ineligible. A student must be in four scheduled periods of his/her school day to be able to participate in practice, competition or performance unless prior administrative approval has been granted.
3. Students will pursue academic success. All co-curricular participants meeting Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) and the Sauk Prairie School District requirements for a full-time student achieve eligibility.

5. Hold the child responsible for his/her actions, informing the activities director about code violations and communicating that intention to the child at the beginning of the school year.
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY, INELIGIBILITY & PROBATION
Eligibility & Ineligibility
Co-curricular participants must be passing all subjects to participate in co-curricular activities. If a student has a failing grade at the end of a grading period, the student will be ineligible for one calendar week starting the day grades are posted as final. Parents will be notified of the ineligibility dates for their
6
child. Students are ineligible for participation in competition and/or performances during this period.* Students should attend and participate in practice.
If the student has not raised his/her grade to passing in the class he/she was failing after the initial school week of ineligibility, the student will continue to be ineligible. Following the initial ineligibility period, the student’s progress is evaluated weekly to determine eligibility.
An “incomplete” grade may be given special consideration by the principal or designee due to circumstances beyond the student's control. If an “incomplete” grade becomes a failing grade, the student will then be declared ineligible and will begin an initial period of ineligibility.
A transfer student’s eligibility will be defined by his/her most recent grade report. WIAA rules will be followed which include communicating with the student's previous school.
*A scrimmage or practice performance is defined as a practice and the student is able to participate at the coach/advisor’s discretion.
