Welcome to our 2015 -16

Training Programme

Voluntary Action Sheffield has trained thousands of staff and volunteers for over the last 20 years. As an

organisation that supports the development of charities and not for profit organisations in the city, we have

knowledge of the needs and changing demands on organisations and we use this to form our training

programme. Please let us know if anything you need is missing; we can organise new courses throughout the year

if there is enough interest.

You will find brief details of all of our training courses inside this programme, and all of our full course outlines

can be viewed at

Examples of tailored training we

have organised

If your organisation has a number of people needing the

same training or development, it can be more affordable to

organise training at your own premises.

Depending on the nature of the training and the amount

of development or ‘tailoring’ needed, prices range from

around £800 to £1000 for a one-day course on your own

premises, and we offer a 20% discount for Voluntary

Organisations.

Choose an ‘off the peg’ course or ask us to design and

commission a course just for you. This can be either based

on courses from this programme, or be a more bespoke

event to meet your specific needs. If you do not have

enough people to make a tailored course viable, contact

us and we will see if we can match you up with others

wanting the same thing.

Examples of popular ‘Off the peg’ courses:

• Health and Safety at Work Certificate

• Emergency First Aid Certificate

• Performance Management for managers and

supervisors

• Supervising and Supporting Volunteers

• PTLLS (Award Level 3 in Education and Training)

Examples of more ‘bespoke’ training:

• Peer mentoring

• Working with difficult behaviour

• Customer Service

• Developing support plans

• Running consultations through focus groups

• Management skills for new managers

A new team supporting someone who self-harms

needed an insight into the reasons for her behaviour,

and what to look out for in order to provide an

appropriate level of support.

VAS commissioned an expert trainer with personal

experience of these issues, who designed and delivered a

course tailored to meet their needs.

The team said that this open and practical approach to

their concerns completely answered their questions and

they now feel confident that they can deliver the support

this service user needs.

Following re-structure, an organisation needed to

ensure that all team leaders completely understood

their role, and how to improve the competence of

their team members.

VAS organised a two-day course covering the logistical

aspects of project management, and the skills required

to supervise team members, and to deal with difficult

situations. Following the sessions, the trainer wrote

a comprehensive report for the organisation, with

suggestions for ways to support the new team leaders and

to promote ongoing development.

The organisation reported that attendees had embraced

the training and shared their experiences and expertise. This

has led to a more coherent approach to team management

and project delivery.

If your training can be organised for a

date in any of Sheffield’s school holidays,

we should be able to provide a training

room at The Circle, free of charge.

VAS offers a range of qualifications and we work as flexibly as possible to meet the various preferences and

learning needs of our customers. In particular, we realise that qualifications are expensive - not only in money, but

also in time out of work to attend sessions, so we offer some qualifications on a ‘roll on - roll off’ online learning

basis, with the option of adding face-to-face sessions.

If you are interested in any of our learning opportunities that lead to a qualification please come to one of our

Qualification Surgeries. These are held at The Circle on the first Tuesday of every month. You can come in at any

time between 2.00pm and 5.30pm to discuss all of the options and find the right qualification and course for you.

Please contact us in advance, so we can make sure a member of the Training Team is available to talk to you.

Alternatively, contact us to discuss the options at [email protected] or telephone 0114 2536627.

Qualifications for Volunteer Managers and Co-ordinators

Nationally-recognised qualifications in Volunteer Management.

• Level 3 Award

Suitable for aspiring volunteer coordinators, and those with more experience.

• Level 4 Award

Suitable for people with significant experience of volunteer management, whether or not they are currently in this post.

• Level 4 Certificate

Suitable only for volunteer co-ordinators and managers who are currently in a position to carry out real-life changes to

a volunteer programme. Start with the Level 4 Award, then add 6 credits from the choice of work-based Units.

These qualifications were developed by Awarding Body Certa, with the support and guidance of Volunteer Centres and

Managers in Yorkshire and Humber. Voluntary Action Sheffield was part of the development team, and the first Centre to

offer the full range.

Length

The Level 3 Award (6 credits) can be achieved in 60 hours, with 90 hours required for the Level 4 Award (9 credits). The Level

4 Certificate (15 credits) requires about 150 hours of work. About 18 hours of this will be in the three, one-day sessions (see

‘Underpinning Knowledge’ below).

Underpinning Knowledge

We run three, full-day courses that underpin the Qualifications and they are repeated three times each year, on different weekdays.

• Organising Your Volunteer Programme • Attracting and Keeping Volunteers • Supervising and Supporting Volunteers

You can find details of these courses at www.vas.org.uk/volunteer_management_courses or on page 31.

Choosing and working towards your Qualification

Once you have attended the three one-day courses, choose whether to go for Level 3 or Level 4 and let us know. We will

register you on the online course, which has additional learning resources, discussion forums, guidance and tutor support,

plus the assignments and tasks required to achieve the qualification.

Individual tutorial support is available online. Group tutorials will be arranged on demand.

Costs

The underpinning one-day courses costs £265 if booked as a set of all three courses. Like all our long accredited courses, the

same price applies to people from all sectors and sizes of organisation.

In addition to the cost of the underpinning courses

• Level 3 Award costs £150

• Level 4 Award costs £200

• Level 4 Certificate costs £300

If you wish, you may complete the Level 4 Award and add additional Units to get

your Level 4 Certificate.

We offer Level 3, 4 and 5 Awards in Leadership and Management, accredited through the Institute of Leadership

and Management.

• Level 3 is designed for Line Managers and other management roles at that level. This might include Project Managers,

• Level 4 is for managers with a higher level of responsibility and those working at Level 3 (Line Managers, for instance)

who feel able to do a more advanced course.

• Level 5 is for Managers and Leaders with a more senior role or a greater breadth of responsibility.

ILM qualifications allow you to achieve your Award through working on your choice of a combination of Units from a short

list.

All Units are based on applying knowledge in your workplace. We offer online tutoring and resources to guide you through

the underpinning theory. Some of our one-day courses are directly linked to the ILM qualifications. You can choose to attend
