The First Sunday After the Epiphany

The Baptism of Our Lord

In Preparation

Please observe silence as you read, pray, and meditate.

PRELUDE Michael Phillips

Prelude,

Opus 7

Kenneth Leighton (1929-1988)

Fidelis –

Percy Whitlock (1903-1946)

WORDS OF PREPARATION Matthew 3:13-17

Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Father in heaven, as at the baptism in the Jordan River you once proclaimed Jesus your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit, grant that all who are baptized in his name may faithfully keep the covenant into which they have been called, boldly confess their Savior, and with him be heirs of life eternal; through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us,

We beheld the glory of the Father, full of grace and truth.

(from John 1)

v HYMN OF INVOCATION

Minister: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

People: And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory.

Minister: In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

Minister: Let us pray.

CORPORATE CONFESSION OF SIN

Minister: Hear what our Lord says, “The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”

Minister: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

People: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto thee, that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against thee by thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to thine infinite mercy, seeking and imploring thy grace, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

DECLARATION OF ABSOLUTION

Minister: Hear the Word of the Gospel: “Christ has died for our sins and been raised for our justification.” All you who repent of your sin and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for your salvation, rejoice and be glad and give glory to the Lord who has taken away all of your sins in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

v Minister: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

People: the Maker of heaven and earth.

Minister: O Lord, open our lips,

People: and our mouth will declare your praise.

God So Loved the World

– John Stainer (1840-1901)

God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,

that whoso believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world;

but that the world through him might be saved. God so loved the world.

v CORPORATE CONFESSION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

Unison: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead;

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

v Minister: The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People: And also with you!

Minister: Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

Members of the congregation greet one another with a sign of friendship such as the ancient words that the church has used over the centuries, “The peace of Christ be with you,” and the response, “And also with you.”

LESSONS

Psalm 85

You have been gracious to your land, O LORD, you have restored the good fortune of Jacob. You have forgiven the iniquity of your people

and blotted out all their sins. You have withdrawn all your fury

and turned yourself from your wrathful indignation. Restore us then, O God our Savior;

let your anger depart from us.

Will you be displeased with us for ever?

will you prolong your anger from age to age? Will you not give us life again,

that your people may rejoice in you? Show us your mercy, O LORD,

and grant us your salvation.

I will listen to what the LORD God is saying,

for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to him. Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him,

that his glory may dwell in our land. Mercy and truth have met together;

righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall spring up from the earth,

and righteousness shall look down from heaven. The LORD will indeed grant prosperity,

and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness shall go before him,

and peace shall be a pathway for his feet.

Isaiah 42:1-7

Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: “I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.”

1 Corinthians 1:26-31

For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Sermon Lesson – Matthew 3:13-17

13Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14John would have prevented him,

saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for

thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16And when Jesus was baptized, immediately

he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending

like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom
