IBM, NAS and Storage Networking

IBM TotalStorageTM Network Attached

Storage 200 products are just one part of the overall IBM Storage Networking offering of hardware, software and services. IBM NAS products provide you with one more building block to increase the flexibility, efficiency and effectiveness of your storage network-ing solutions and deployments. Also, because our NAS products are based on an open-system concept, their storage is designed to be as easy to expand in the future as the system is to install now, into both heteroge-neous and homogeheteroge-neous network environments.

Task-optimized storage appliances

The IBM NAS 200 series models are LAN-attached, high-performance appliances designed to provide shared storage to both clients and servers in Windows, UNIX or mixed environments. The affordability and scalability of the IBM NAS 200 series make it an excellent choice for those who are reducing their use of general-purpose servers for storage.

With its multiprotocol support, the IBM NAS 200 series enables clients to share files in a heterogeneous environment with Windows and UNIX. This multiple-platform support eliminates the need for separate storage for each protocol. IBM Network Attached Storage 200 (rack model)

Flexible — Multiple file protocol support (Windows® [CIFS], UNIX® [NFS], HTTP, FTP , AppleTalk and NetWare) means clients and servers can easily share informa-tion from different platforms

Reliable — Hot-swap disk drives, redundant components and IBM Advanced Systems Management designed to keep these systems up and running

Simple — LAN installation through an easy-to-use Web browser interface simplifies setup and ongoing systems management

Data protection — Instant file and volume restore capability utilizing any one of a possible 250 True Images to recover corrupted/ deleted data.

High-reliability design

Hot-swap and redundant hard disk drives and power supplies mean that the IBM NAS 200 series is built for reliability. This redundancy means that you do not have to take the system off-line to add or replace a failed compo-nent, adding to overall reliability and uptime.

The IBM NAS 200 provides up to 250 persistent True Image views of a virtual drive's file data. Using Persistent Storage Manager (PSM), these point-in-time views can be created on a scheduled basis, and with the proper permissions, users can restore previous file levels without administra-tor involvement. Administraadministra-tors can also restore entire drives and volumes in a single step, saving precious IT time by eliminating the need to drag and drop thousands of files back to the original location. By incorporating its own open file manager, PSM also helps provide the safe and consistent backup of in-use files. The IBM NAS 200 is designed to provide:

• Protection against accidental file deletions

• Client and administrator file restorals • Administrator volume restorals • Continued access to files during backup • 24 x 7 data access

The IBM NAS 200 series also provides the following features within the Advanced Systems Management package to help ensure your system achieves maximum uptime:

• Light-Path Diagnostics for quick determination of a failed part through LEDs • Predictive Failure Analysis® monitoring

on CPUs, memory, fans and power supplies with user-selectable alert levels • Remote connect for automated paging The optional Remote Supervisor PCI adapter also allows network alerts through IBM Director.

Scalable storage systems

As storage networks become more complex, organizations are faced with finding cost-effective ways to manage

their exponential growth. To effectively prepare for short- and long-term storage requirements, companies must have scalable storage systems that grow as networking capacity needs increase. The IBM Network Attached Storage 200 series provides solutions for these growing storage requirements.

The tower version of the IBM NAS 200 series is ideal for workgroup and small departmental settings. The tower delivers from 109.2 GB to 440.4 GB of storage and is well suited for deploy-ment in remote or branch-office environments. The rack version provides from 109.2 GB to 3.52 TB of storage and is ideal for use in a department or regional office. Both the tower and rack provide excellent performance for Windows and mixed Windows/UNIX environments. So, if you need affordably priced storage for 10 people in a branch office or 100 people in a regional location, the IBM NAS 200 series should meet your requirements.

The IBM NAS 200 series is well suited for the following tasks:

• Storage for remote workgroup, branch and regional office e-mail and client backups

• ISP e-mail storage or video file serving • ASP workfile storage

• SSP general-purpose storage • Internet data center deployment

Tower configuration—Storage where you need it

Whether you need additional storage in a remote location or for a workgroup within your main building or campus, the IBM NAS 200 series tower version offers many features found in larger systems, but at an affordable, entry-level price. This single-engine tower configuration is powered by a 1.13-GHz Pentium® III processor with a

single-channel hardware RAID controller and six internal storage bays. For enhanced performance, an additional 1.13-GHz Pentium III processor can be added. With a basic storage capacity of 109.2 GB, this model can be expanded up to 440.4 GB by using 73.4 GB hot-swappable hard disk drives.

Rack configuration—For more performance and storage-intensive environments

The IBM NAS 200 series rack model is a high-capacity appliance engineered to expand storage in a small footprint for larger client/server networks. The rack model offers an affordable alternative to other, more expensive departmental-level NAS solutions. With its two 1.13-GHz Pentium III processors and a four-channel hardware RAID controller, the single-engine IBM NAS 200 rack is designed to provide the performance required in more data-intensive applications. The IBM NAS 200 rack also provides excellent storage scalability. Starting at 109.2 GB, the IBM NAS 200 rack can be scaled up to 3.52 TB by using 73.4 GB hot-swappable hard disk drives.

Preloaded system software

The IBM Network Attached Storage 200 series is preloaded with tightly integrated base operating and system software. This preloaded software simplifies the installation, configuration and management of the IBM NAS 200 compared to general-purpose servers and other storage systems. The software is loaded to the engine's hard disk drive with a backup copy provided on a CD-ROM. In addition to its

operating system and NAS application programming, the provided software includes:

• Universal Manageability Services (Web-based GUI) and Microsoft® Terminal Services for local or remote setup and administration

• Advanced Appliance Configuration Utility provides headless setup and configuration

• Windows NT® Backup

• IBM Director agent for system administration

• Tivoli® Storage Manager client for storage management and backups • Columbia Data Products Persistent
