1. Scope of Works

Scope of Activities

This scope defines the minimum standards to be adopted when installing Lightning

Protection System according to construction co-ordination drawings. A lightning

protection system performs a simple task. It provides a specified path on which

lightning can travel. When a building structure is equipped with a lightning protection

system, the destructive power of the lightning strike is directed safely into the

ground, leaving the structure and personal belongings unharmed.

Site Procedure

Site mobilization shall be done with real time monitoring the conditions & progress of

builder works. Before commencement of the work, carry out examination of the

physical condition of the area. Photographs should be taken where necessary, prior

to commencement and during works.

Method Statement

I. Preparation stage

a. The principle components of a conventional structural lightning protection system are

1. Air Termination Network 2. Down Conductors

3. Earth Termination Network 4. Bonding

b. Specification allows the use of 'natural conductors' such as rebars and structural steelwork, provided that they are electrically continuous and adequately earthed. c. Prior to install lightning protection system examine paths to ensure all areas free

of debris that may interfere with the installation.

d. Inventory all items immediately after unloading, using manufactures packing list. e. All the related material should be stored away from high traffic areas.

II. Installation Stage

a. Site survey of the proposed Lightning Protection System based on approved CSD

by foreman/sub-contractor together with Engineer.

b. Installation must be carried out based on approved shop drawings & samples by

foreman/ sub-contractor.

c. Method and material used for the installation of Lightning protection system shall

comply BS6651. (Protection of structure against lightning).

d. The earth electrode pits location shall be marked out on site before commencement

of hammering in electrodes. The earth pits shall be near the location of the down conductors.

e. Those earth pits located in the basement shall be provided with seals to prevent penetration of the ground slab.

f. Electrodes are hammered into the ground and reading is taken to ensure that the resistance is less than 10 ohms per electrode.

h. Earth termination network: The means of dissipating the current to the general mass of earth. Choose an earth electrode to suit the ground conditions in the locality of the structure. Electrodes are available in the form of rods and plates (lattice or solid)

i. Earth rod clamps: Select a high copper content alloy earth rod clamp for the connection of the earthing conductor to the earth rod. In this below ground

(5)

application, the clamp must ensure a good electrical contact and resist corrosion throughout the lifetime of the installation.

j. Earth inspection chambers: Select an earth inspection chamber to protect the earth electrode connections.

k. Bonding: Bonding is the most commonly employed method of avoiding the damaging effects of side flashing. All continuous metalwork should be considered for bonding. All metallic services, eg cable armouring, gas, water or steam piping, entering the building should also be bonded as directly as possible to the earth termination network.

Select the correct type of metalwork bond for the application, ie a flat column face, a circular rainwater pipe or a ribbed reinforcing bar

l. Depending on the specification, the down conductor tapes can be thermal weld to the rebar and casted in the column or run in a continuous strip on the surface of the

(6)

external wall.

m. For casting of column, floor, continuous supervision is necessary to ensure that the tape is extended before the main builder close up form work before casting. Approved clamps to be used for extension tape.

n. Down conductor network: The down conductor system is the means of carrying the current of a lightning strike safely to the earth termination network.

o. Conductor fixings: Select the correct system of fixings for each part of the conductor system

p. Air termination network: The air termination network is the point of connection for a lightning strike. It typically consists of a meshed conductor arrangement covering the roof of the structure.

Use air terminals in the form of vertical air rods for the protection of prominent roof top features or equipment. Use strike pads to expose concealed conductors

(7)

q. Air terminal bases: Choose the correct air terminal base. This will ensure that the vertical air rods are both solidly fixed to the fabric of the structure and have a low resistance connection to the conductor network

r. Conductor jointing clamps: Select a component for the interconnection of multiple conductors or for changes of direction. Jointing clamps will ensure a low resistance, corrosion resistant connection.

s. Test clamps: In order to allow periodic disconnection and testing of the earth termination network, select a test clamp to be placed within the run of each down conductor.

(8)

t. After installation, Engineer- in-charge shall check the complete works and complete the inspection check list for Lightning Protection System installation works (See Annecure:1)

u. Engineer-in-charge shall arrange and request for inspection with the Owner’s representative Residential Technical Officer (RTO) using approved Main con Request for Inspection (RIN) form.
