Things to do BEFORE coming to Finland!
Before arriving to Finland, the most important thing is to have a place to live. Here are couple alternatives:
Accommodation:
TYS – the student village. The cheapest alternative for students. You need to provide your acceptance letter in order to apply. There are multiple choices. You can live alone or with someone else. http://www.tys.fi/en. APPLY FOR HOUSING FROM TYS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
The tricky thing about TYS is that there are a lot of applicants and NOT everyone is getting a place. So here are more solutions to the problem. The following two are companies on the private market. You can apply to them as well. It is a bit more expensive, but you can always find someone else and live together with. It is quite cheaper in that way.
SATO – is a company on the private market. https://www.sato.fi/en/ TVT – Similar to SATO http://tvt.fi/english/
Turku Students´ accommodation Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TurkuStudents For temporary accommodation, check Omenahotelli and Laivahostel Borea for example.
Documents:
Take all documents that you have, such as:
Passports ID
School certificates (Including higher education certificates you might already have completed) Other documents that can be beneficial for you because in most cases you will need them here.
If you are arriving from outside the EU, bring: All your health certificates or statement from a licensed physician
Chest x-rays with you.
The healthcare system in Finland requires these certificates to ensure that you do not suffer from any contagious respiratory diseases, such as tuberculosis, TB.
Clothes
Well, you do realize you are moving to Finland. The weather is mostly rainy and cold. In the winter it´s even colder. And by cold I mean even -27 degrees in the winter, if you are unlucky enough. Be prepared for that. Bring warm clothes, if you don’t want to spend thousands of euros on that here.
Things to do AFTER coming to Finland!
In order to stay here, you need to follow these steps in this order:Get a Social Security Number (the Finnish ID number). You need this for literally everything. You have to take it from Maistraatti (Registry Office). (Your tutors will help you with this) online link to Maistraatti: http://www.maistraatti.fi/en/
If you are arriving outside EU, you already have the Social Security Number in your residence permit, but you need to register it in Maistraatti.
1. Get a phone number – you need Social Security Number for a permanent data plan. You can still get a pre-paid data plan without the Social Security Number.
2. Open a bank account- in order to open a bank account, you need a social security number. Tutors can help you with this if necessary. From the Finnish banks, Danske Bank and Osuuspankki (OP) have English language services.
3. Register with the police as a resident here in Turku. You need to do that in max 3 months after your arrival! You will need a Social Security Number, phone number and bank account.

Greetings from TUAS Student Tutors!
Congratulations and a warm welcome to the Turku University of Applied Sciences! We are your student tutors in the International Business degree program and we are excited that you have chosen to study here in Turku. We will introduce the school, and of course the city, to you and help you in getting to know your new classmates, teachers, etc. We are looking forward to guiding and supporting you through your first year here. Most of you have already met us in the entrance exam, and you will meet us first thing in the beginning of the orientation days in August. You will receive a lot of new information during the days, but most of all it will be fun and useful, and you will get to know your new classmates. Our goal is to make you feel comfortable in your new school, so that you will enjoy your studies here.
We would also like you to keep your schedule open for the orientation days because we will also organize some get-togethers after school hours. Be prepared for some outdoor activities (rain check!) as well. After all, we would like to know you!
We are looking forward on seeing you during orientation at the end of August.
You will recognize us from our big smiles, helpful attitudes and of course our yellow overalls. Sincerely yours,
The tutors
P.S. You can contact us already during the summer if you have any questions. We have also created a Facebook group for you: PINBOS16. There you can find your classmates and us.
