INTRODUCTION
1.1
SCOPE
This DEP contains piping classes which have been developed for use in refineries and
chemical plants. The basis of design of the piping classes is given in DEP
31.38.01.10-Gen.
This is a revision of the DEP of the same number dated January 2000; a summary of the
changes since the last revision is included in (1.5).
The general requirements for piping systems are specified in DEP 31.38.01.11-Gen.
Piping classes developed primarily for exploration and production facilities are contained in
DEP 31.38.01.15-Gen.
1.2
DISTRIBUTION, INTENDED USE AND REGULATORY CONSIDERATIONS
Unless otherwise authorised by Shell GSI and SIEP, the distribution of this DEP is confined
to companies forming part of or managed by the Royal Dutch/Shell Group, and to
Contractors nominated by them (i.e. the distribution code is "C", as defined in DEP
00.00.05.05-Gen.).
This DEP is intended for use in oil refineries, chemical plants, gas plants and
supply/marketing installations, and where applicable, onshore exploration and production
facilities (all within the property limits as defined in ASME B31.3, Section 300.1).
If national and/or local regulations exist in which some of the requirements may be more
stringent than in this DEP, the Contractor shall determine by careful scrutiny which of the
requirements are the more stringent and which combination of requirements will be
acceptable as regards safety, economic and legal aspects. In all cases the Contractor shall
inform the Principal of any deviation from the requirements of this DEP which is considered
to be necessary in order to comply with national and/or local regulations. The Principal may
then negotiate with the Authorities concerned with the object of obtaining agreement to
follow this DEP as closely as possible.
1.3
DEFINITIONS
1.3.1
General definitions
The Contractor is the party which carries out all or part of the design, engineering,
procurement, construction, commissioning or management of a project or operation of a
facility. The Principal may undertake all or part of the duties of the Contractor.
The Principal is the party which initiates, and ultimately pays for, the project. The Principal
will generally specify the technical requirements. The Principal may also include an agent
or consultant, authorised to act for the Principal.
The word shall indicates a requirement.
The word should indicates a recommendation.
1.3.2
Specific definitions
Hydrogen service
service in which the process stream contains hydrogen at
a partial pressure of 7 bar (abs) and higher.
Low temperature
metal temperature of 0 ºC and lower.
Piping class
assembly of piping components in a piping system,
suitable for a defined service within design limits.
Post Weld Heat Treatment
heat treatment carried out after welding to reduce residual
stresses and to temper hardened microstructures created
by welding.

REFERENCES
In this DEP, reference is made to the following publications:
NOTES: 1. Unless specifically designated by date, the latest edition of each publication shall be used, together with any amendments/supplements/revisions thereto.
2. Excluded from this list are the standards referenced in the piping classes themselves, a list of which would be too extensive.

Notes for Service Index:
*) Piping class with ball valve class; preferred by most Chemical Plants and/or for services requiring frequent valve operations.
1) Piping classes 31011 and 31012 are interchangeable.
2) Selection between 1 and 3 mm corrosion allowance depending on the corrosivety of the medium has to be selected by the corrosion engineer.
3) For the definition of "High Sour" and "Mod Sour", see DEP 31.38.01.11-Gen., Appendix 10.
For new construction and/or modifications to existing piping, this Appendix should be used to determine the severity of the wet H2S process environment and the piping class/materials selected accordingly, taking into account
economics and material availability.
4) See DEP 30.10.02.31-Gen. for low temperature service.
6) See DEP 31.10.11.31-Gen for gaseous oxygen systems. 7) Amine includes ADIP, MEA, DEA, AD, TEA and sulfinol:
H
2S case = H2S/CO2 > 0.01 for gas phase, > 0.02 for liquid phase;
CO2 case = H2S/CO2 < 0.01 for gas phase, > 0.02 for liquid phase.
8) Selection shall be carried out by materials engineer on the the basis of the specific process conditions.
9) Hydrocarbon service includes aviation alkylate, LPG, C1-C4, paraffins and olefins, fuel gas, fuel oil, gasoil, gasoline, isopentane, luboil, naphtha, pentane, toluene and xylene.
10) See DEP 31.40.10.19-Gen. for the use of GRP piping. 11) See DEP 80.47.10.31-Gen. for fire fighting installations. 12) H2 pp < 7 bar; wet H
2S < 50 mg/kg; wet HCN < 20 wppm; S < 0.3 wt. %; TAN < 0.3; H2S < 0.01 mol.%
13) S = Sulphur, NA = Naphthenic Acids.
14) Consult a materials engineer for a check on the high temperature sulphidation corrosion rate and select materials accordingly.
15) See DEP 31.38.01.11-Gen., Appendix 10 for piping in hydrofluoric acid service.
16) See DEP 31.38.01.11-Gen., Appendix 10 for piping in sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) service. The same requirements are applicable to potassium hydroxide service.
*) AISI 316+stellite 6 for sizes DN 15 to DN 40
(1) In this column, where pipe material API 5L-B/ASTM A106-B is indicated, the piping class includes both API 5L Grade B pipe (welded and seamless) and ASTM A106 Grade B pipe (seamless). The most economic material selection is API 5L Grade B welded pipe (ERW or SAW ) and the piping class has been checked to show that this material may be used interchangeably without de-rating. ASTM A106 Grade B or AP I 5L Grade B seamless is provided as an option in the piping class.
(2) This column indicates whether the piping class is suitable for "Sour" service. Classes indicated as "Mod" are suitable for "Moderate sour" service and include standard piping material specifications. Classes designated as "High" are suitable for "High sour" service and include special material specifications and testing. Both t ypes of piping class are also fully suitable for non-sour services. Both types of piping class contain the same valve specifications.
(3) This column indicates whether the piping class requires post weld heat treatment (PWHT) for process reasons. In addition to PWHT of all shop and fields welds, valves are specified with PWHT of all welds (including repairs and internals).
(4) This column indicates whether the piping class has special valves suitable for the indicated services. CODES:
