“ Financial markets are dynamic and no approach to the markets will last forever. At IIT Stuart, we teach students

how to learn, rather than what to learn. Students often ask

me how I can continue to teach the same material. My answer is that the material that we teach is different every time we teach the class.

“ For finance people, Chicago is both the intellectual and practical center of the universe. I love the exchanges, the universities, and the train stations where the grain was shipped in and the people shipped out in the nineteenth century. It is impossible to study finance in this city without being aware of its historical significance.”

“ Sustainability is emerging as a transformative paradigm for businesses to succeed in the next economy. It is not just about managing social and environmental impacts of factories, but also about developing innovative products and services that meet people’s needs and improve their lives. Businesses that truly understand sustainability realize that it is not confined to enhancing their corporate reputation or to a single department, but that it must be embedded throughout their companies.

“ Stuart’s sustainability program allows students to explore the breadth and depth of business and sustainability issues in the real world. Our courses cover technical aspects of environmental performance measurement, legal and policy issues, as well as traditional business functions. In many of our classes, we work with clients from the private and public sectors on projects aligned with the clients’ real needs, such as designing environmental management systems and developing strategic sustainability plans.”

of North Carolina; M.S. Computer Science, Stanford University; M.A. and Ph.D. Economics, Duke University

Professional Experience: research fellow, Duke University Social

“ My specialization is the application of modeling techniques from game theory to the study of issues in microeconomics, industrial organization, marketing, operations, and finance. Game theory helps explain the fundamental strategic tensions that exist in the marketplace, underlying many to-business and business-to-consumer interactions. Game theory is also the analytical backbone of Internet monetization, driving the structure behind countless advertising auctions and design decisions.

“ At IIT Stuart School of Business, we embed tools from game theory in our curriculum, beginning with a core course on managerial economics, to a course on strategic marketing, and a course on negotiations and strategic decision making. We equip our students with the ability to view interactions in the marketplace, including those between themselves and future employers, through a game-theoretic lens, shedding critical light on how to best tackle challenging real-world problems.”

Professional Experience: Author of Building Automated Trading Systems and

co-author of Quality Money Management, as well as numerous academic articles relating to high-frequency trading and automation

“ There’s nothing cooler than automated trading. As an emerging discipline, automated trading covers quantitative finance, trading strategy, computer programming, risk management, project management, and even organizational structure and behavior. And Chicago is the best place in the world to study automated trading, because so many trading firms, exchanges, and hedge funds are tackling the competitive issues right in our backyard. “ In my classes, we spend our time discussing technologies and

programming techniques and applying them to problems in finance and automated trading. In their projects, my students get the chance to really get their hands dirty with the issues of getting things to work in both quantitative research and real-time trading environments. When new technologies arise, I incorporate them into my courses so students are well-prepared to hit the ground running when they get a job.”
