The eye is a fascinating little organ responsible for an important sensory function - Vision. It is an accessible structure which can be easily examined and handled. Surgery is often intricate and complex, and can often be related to other medical conditions including neurological, oncological, rheumatologic, endocrine and cardiovascular disorders. This spectrum of conditions provides Ophthalmologists with interesting diagnostic and management challenges.
The Ophthalmology Residency Program at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) aims to nurture you into a well-rounded highly competent Ophthalmologist, who is ready to serve the needs of the Singapore population. A pool of renowned Faculty dedicated to your training, together with a wide case-mix will help you to master proper clinical examination of the eye and all its functions, management of the diff erent sub-specialty conditions. Moreover, you will be able to perform various forms of ophthalmic surgery. The program will also prepare you for further sub-specialty fellowship training, be it within SNEC or overseas.
Our close association with the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) also means that you will have opportunities to be involved in exciting research breakthroughs.

Your Ophthalmology Residency
Over the course of fi ve years, the robust Ophthalmology Residency Program at SingHealth provides you with a broad-based education covering all aspects of general Ophthalmology and its subspecialties. Ample opportunities are present to participate in clinical and surgical training, attend didactic lectures and pursue your research dreams. A large and specialized Ophthalmic centre such as SNEC has abundant and dedicated training resources, and we have created a highly structured, vibrant and collegial educational environment to help develop you as an Ophthalmologist.

Through the Ophthalmology Residency Program, you will be equipped to manage all general Ophthalmic conditions with professionalism and ease. SNEC graduates are not only competent in the diagnosis, surgical skills and use of investigational equipment, but are furthermore professional, compassionate and sensitive towards patients.
If fellowship training is in your plans, you will have little diffi culty as a SNEC graduate to secure further training in an Ophthalmic subspecialty of choice at SNEC or any other international institution. Our graduates are also eminently qualifi ed to apply for an Associate Consultant position in Ophthalmology at any hospital in Singapore.

SERI’s state-of-the-art complex comprise of eight laboratories, a clinical trials pharmacy, research clinics with specialized research equipment and facilities, as well as a team of clinical staff and research scientists drawn from leading institutions around the world. Beyond these facilities, SERI has established a comprehensive network of Clinician Researchers in SERI-affi liated institutions throughout Singapore, including the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University, as well as Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Defence Medical Research Institute (DMRI) and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School.
Ongoing research alliances and collaborations with renowned international institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA; Moorfi elds Eye Hospital, London, UK and the Lions Eye Institute, Perth, Australia further ensure a high level of research competency and skills transfer.

with diff erent challenges to excite and inspire you everyday. In the fi rst three years, clinical training is taught together with core competencies such as medical knowledge, patient care, interpersonal and communication skills and professionalism.
The remaining two years of the program will allow our Residents to continue to hone their clinical skills in all subspecialties as Registrars before they attain full subspecialty registration.
