Laser cataract surgery is now a reality, and now it is available at ReVision LASIK and Cataract Surgery Center. James Schumer, M.D. performed the first laser cataract surgery in Central Ohio in March 2013 with the VICtuS femtosecond laser. traditional cataract surgery is considered to be one of the safest and most successful procedures performed in medicine today. Now, a technological breakthrough with bladeless laser cataract surgery is available that has significantly improved the precision of several of the most critical steps in cataract surgery. With laser cataract surgery, the doctors at ReVision LASIK and Cataract Surgery Center will customize your procedure to your eye’s unique characteristics, resulting in more predictable outcomes while potentially making cataract surgery even safer.

“From the moment I contacted

ReVision, you did an outstanding job of understanding my concerns and explaining my surgical options. Thanks to your

fantastic surgical skills, I was able to have a successful laser cataract procedure with a lens implant that provided me with vision I never imagined possible. Please pass on my appreciation of the support provided by the whole team at ReVision. You should be extremely proud of the way they help those of us who are somewhat anxious about cataract surgery to end up having such an enjoyable experience.”

CATARACTS

If your vision is getting cloudy, if you are losing your color perception, if you are having trouble reading or with your night vision, you may be experiencing the early stages of developing cataracts. The natural lens inside the eye is normally transparent in our youth. As we age our clear lenses inevitably become cloudy. A cataract is the clouding of this natural lens. Cataracts are a normal part of the aging process.

There is no medical treatment to reverse or prevent the development of cataracts. Once they form, the only way to see clearly again is to have them removed and replaced with an artificial lens or IOL. In general, when you are bothered by your vision during your daily activities, it is time to think about cataract surgery. Cataracts will typically not damage the eye while growing, so there is no need to rush into the surgery. You can decide when the time is right for you. Although it is surgery, the risks with modern cataract surgery are very low. You should not be anxious or afraid of the procedure. Laser cataract surgery has improved the precision and our outcomes as well. Exciting advances in lens optics now provide our patients with a number of options as to how they can choose to see after their cataract surgery.

”I want to express my appreciation for the high level of professional care and expertise that I received prior to undergoing laser cataract surgery. On every visit to the clinic, the reception staff was very welcoming and all of the clinic staff that dealt with me were very reassuring and efficient.

By the time of my post-operative check-up two weeks later my eyesight was excellent and there were no issues. My vision is extremely good and the outcome surpassed my expectation. I appreciate the level of improvement that was attained through laser cataract surgery. All aspects of my treatment were outstanding and I sincerely thank you for the care and attention that I received.”

IOL

CATARACT or REFRACTIVE LENS EXCHANGE

Monofocal with Astigmatism Monofocal with

Astigmatism Corrected Advanced IOL with Broad Range of Vision IOLs are soft, foldable lenses that are inserted into the eye in order to replace the natural lens that developed the cataract. These lenses are also viable options for some patients who have not yet developed cataracts but want to reduce or eliminate their need for glasses with a procedure known as Refractive Lens Exchange or RLE. Cataract surgery and Refractive Lens Exchange are identical procedures. The only difference is that with RLE, the lens is still mostly clear and is not covered by insurance.

Made of plastic or silicone materials, IOLs are available with optics that provide patients with a wide range of visual clarity and focusing capability. Our goal is to give you the best overall quality of post-operative vision with the lens that is best suited for your eye. Monofocal IOLs provide a single zone of clear focus and are usually implanted to provide excellent distance vision when patients do not have astigmatism. Astigmatism correcting monofocal IOL or laser cataract surgery can be used for patients that do have astigmatism. Patients with monofocal IOLs will typically require the use of bi-focals or reading glasses for near and distance vision. There are also a number of Premium IOLs that can provide a more broad range of vision, near, intermediate and distance with minimal, if any, need for glasses or contact lenses. The decision as to what type of IOL you want is an important decision that will affect how you see for the rest of your life. Therefore, it is important that you understand your surgical options and testing that is necessary for us to help you achieve the visual outcome you desire.

“Following my final check up with you after having laser cataract surgery in both eyes I am delighted with the result. My distance vision is perfect and near vision has been restored so that I do not need reading glasses.

From the first consultation at ReVision when you explained my condition and the procedures and options available to me in order to correct it, I found the experience reassuring and everyone at ReVision caring and professional. I was particularly impressed by the time and trouble you took to make sure that the results were tailor-made to my particular requirements.

Many thanks for your care and professionalism!”

VICtuS Femtosecond Laser

THE PROCEDURE

Bladeless laser cataract surgery is

performed in our in-office surgical suite and only takes 15 to 20 minutes. In addition to using the femtosecond laser to accomplish many of the surgical steps that were

traditionally performed by hand, ReVision LASIK and Cataract Surgery Center offers the latest innovations in cataract surgery, such as “drops only” anesthesia (no shots), sutureless small-incisions through the clear cornea and foldable intraocular lenses. The precise, reproducible steps performed by the laser mean more accurate lens positioning, less trauma to the eye and more predictable visual results which are especially important with Premium IOLs.

Laser Capsulorhexis Laser Incision

Manual Capsulorhexis Manual Blade Incision

Laser Lens Division Manual Lens Division

Bladeless laser cataract surgery uses a stair-step incision created on the edge of the cornea with the laser instead of with a blade. The incision is self-sealing and rarely needs suturing. The laser then creates an opening, “capsulorhexis”, in the thin capsular membrane that surrounds the natural lens to provide an opening to remove the cataract. Studies have shown that less than 10% of manual capsulorhexi, which are made with a bent or shaped needle, have been able to achieve the same accuracy that is produced with laser cataract surgery.

In order to remove the cataract, the lens is softened and divided into manageable sections. This critical step can also be performed by a femtosecond laser, which creates less stress to the delicate fibers surrounding the capsular membrane that hold the lens in place.

CORRECTING ASTIGMATISM

Astigmatism is present when the cornea, or outer window of the eye is more curved in one direction than the other, like the back of a spoon or the shape of a football. Astigmatism blurs your vision at all distances and is often present along with nearsightedness or farsightedness.

If you choose to have laser cataract surgery over traditional basic cataract surgery, we will use the laser or astigmatism correcting Toric IOLs to reduce or eliminate the blurring caused by astigmatism. For patients with astigmatism who select a more advanced IOL to see their best at all distances with little or no dependence on glasses, our laser provides the most precise and predictable astigmatism treatment.

OPTIMIZING IOL SELECTION

FOR EVERY PATIENT

Not everyone is a good candidate for the implant they desire or the one their friend or family member recommended because no two eyes are alike. Advanced diagnostic testing is required to determine how the unique anatomical characteristics of your eye will interact with the specific optical technologies used in manufacturing each type of IOL. This advanced diagnostic testing provides us with much more analytical data, similar to the superior detail of an MRI versus an X-ray. Only you and the Doctors at ReVision LASIK and Cataract Surgery Center can determine which IOL is best for you and your lifestyle.

WHAT TO EXPECT

AFTER CATARACT SURGERY

Cataract surgery is a painless process. You will receive medication prior to surgery to help you stay relaxed and calm and to keep your eye numb. Your surgery will typically take 10-20 minutes to complete. You will be released soon after the procedure to go home and relax. You can use your eye immediately after surgery. Your vision will improve significantly within the first day. Complete visual recovery varies from patient to patient, but most patients return to their regular activities within a day or two. If cataracts are

present in both eyes, the second procedure may be scheduled within a week of the first eye. Serious complications are extremely rare, but because it is surgery, there are potential risks involved. Our surgeons and counselors at ReVision LASIK and Cataract Surgery Center will provide you with additional information about the risks associated with cataract surgery and answer any of the questions you may have. We appreciate your trust and confidence in choosing ReVision LASIK and Cataract Surgery Center for your cataract procedure.

DOROTHY

“When Dr. Schumer discovered that I had cataracts, I immediately assumed I would have to wait until they were as bad as both my father’s and grandmother’s were. It was a nice surprise to learn that I could have cataract surgery now and that my replacement lenses would accommodate my sight defects.

I was extremely anxious before the surgery but was treated with the utmost respect and dignity by Dr. Schumer and his staff, which helped immensely. He explained in detail what was wrong, how it would be corrected and what my eyesight should be like post-surgery. He did such a good job on my left eye; I was able to have the second surgery on my right eye only 14 days later.

At all times during consultation, surgery and post-operative checks, everything was explained fully and I felt very safe in his hands. I have no hesitation in recommending Dr. Schumer to anyone who is considering eye surgery.”
