TRUMP JOB APPROVAL IN NH STEADY,NO CONSENSUS ON ACTION IN SYRIA

DURHAM,NH – New Hampshire residents are divided aboutPresidentDonald Trump's administraon.ApprovalofTrump's

performance as President,his handling offoreign affairs and the economy,and opinion on the direcon ofthe country remain closely ed to parsanship.A majority ofGranite Staters supportthe removalofBasharal-Assad from powerin Syria,butrespondents have varied opinions on how this should be accomplished.

These findings are based on the latestGranite State Poll*,conducted by the University ofNew Hampshire Survey Center.Five hundred and eighteen (518)randomly selected New Hampshire adults were interviewed by landline and cellulartelephone between April24 and May 4,2017.The margin ofsampling errorforthe survey is +/-4.3 percent.

PresidenalApproval

Justoverone hundred days into PresidentTrump's administraon,less than halfofNew Hampshire adults approve ofhis performance so faras President.Currently,43% ofNew Hampshire adults say they approve ofthe job Trump is doing as President,47% disapprove, and 9% are neutral.

While overallapprovalofTrump's job performance is unchanged since February,the percentage ofrespondents who strongly approve ofTrump has declined somewhatfrom 31% in February to 25% in May,while the percentage who strongly disapproves (41%)has remained the same since February.

On a scale where "strongly approve" equals 7 and "strongly disapprove" equals 1,Trump's approval(3.7)is unchanged since February and remains wellbelow thatofhis predecessor,Barack Obama (5.0)in the second quarterofhis presidency.However,Trump's job approvalhas been stable since the firstquarterofhis presidency,while PresidentObama experienced a decline each quarterin his first yearin office.

NetFavorability Rang -PresidentDonald Trump

Trump's netfavorability rang -the percentage ofpeople who say they have a favorable opinion ofhim minus the percentage who have an unfavorable opinion -remained steady since February among Republicans and Independents butimproved among Democrats. Trump remains highly popularamong Republicans (+70%),significantly higherthan in October2016 (+24%),while Independents are neutral(-1%).Though his netfavorability among Democrats remains very low (-68%),ithas increased considerably since February 2017 (-88%).

Trump's favorability among New Hampshire adults has remained steady since February aerrising considerably following the 2016 presidenalcampaign.Trump is currently viewed favorably by 43% ofGranite Staters,47% have an unfavorable opinion ofhim,and 10% are neutralordon'tknow enough to say.

Frequentconservave radio listeners (82% favorable),self-described conservaves (81%),gun owners (62%),acve orveteran military members (57%),Manchesterarea residents (54%),and those who aend religious services once a week ormore o en (53%)are most likely to have a favorable opinion ofTrump.Self-described liberals (87% unfavorable),Boston Globe readers (82%),frequentNHPR listeners (69%),those who have completed postgraduate work (65%),union members (61%),and those who aend religious services once ortwice a month (57%)are mostlikely to have an unfavorable opinion ofTrump.

Foreign Affairs Approval

Granite Staters have a loweropinion ofTrump's handling offoreign affairs than his handling the economy.Currently,43% ofNew Hampshire adults approve ofhow Trump is handling foreign affairs,49% disapprove,and 8% are neutral.Eighty percentofRepublicans approve ofTrump's performance in foreign affairs,butonly 46% ofIndependents and 13% ofDemocrats do so.ApprovalofTrump's handling offoreign affairs has slightly increased since February among Republicans,Independents,and Democrats.

In the second Granite State Pollsince his inauguraon,Granite Staters'approvalofTrump's handling ofthe economy is unchanged. Currently,48% approve ofhow Trump is handling the economy,40% disapprove,and 12% are neutralorunsure.Republicans nearly universally approve ofTrump's handling ofthe economy (93%),while Independents (42%)and Democrats (15%)are much less likely to do so.

Overall,New Hampshire residents connue to be slightly pessimisc aboutthe direcon the country is heading.Forty-fourpercent (44%)ofNew Hampshire adults think things in this country are generally going in the rightdirecon,50% think things are seriously off on the wrong track,and 6% don’tknow orare unsure.Opinion remains very closely ed to parsanship;78% ofRepublicans believe the the country is heading in the rightdirecon butonly 48% ofIndependents and 14% ofDemocrats agree.

Syria

Granite Staters are divided in theiropinion on how PresidentTrump is handling the situaon in Syria.A slightplurality (44%)approve of Trump's handling ofSyria,41% disapprove,and 15% are neutral.

Republicans are farmore likely than Democrats orIndependents to approve ofTrump's handling ofthe situaon in Syria;more than three-quarters (79%)approve while only 13% disapprove.Only 18% ofDemocrats approve ofTrump's handling ofthe situaon in Syria, while 39% ofIndependents do so.

Although more than halfofNew Hampshire adults supportthe removalofSyrian PresidentBasharal-Assad from power,Granite Staters are divided on whatspecifically the US should do in Syria.Nearly a third ofrespondents (31%)would only like the US to conduct diplomac talks,26% supportairstrikes,13% wantno American involvementin the conflictatall,11% supportarming Syrian opposion forces,and only 5% favorsending American ground troops to Syria.Three percentwanta combinaon ofthese opons,and 10% don't know orare unsure.

Among those who supportthe removalofAssad,only 57% prefera military acon such as sending in ground troops,conducng air strikes,orarming opposion forces.Among those who oppose Assad's removal,30% would like the United States to hold diplomac talks and 31% would like no American involvementatall.

Registered Republicans (46%),Donald Trump voters (46%),those who aend religious services once ortwice a month (45%),and Central/Lakes Region residents (41%)are more likely than others to prefersending in ground troops orconducng airstrikes while self-described liberals (58%),Hillary Clinton voters (55%),and self-idenfied Democrats (55%)are more likely than others to prefer conducng diplomac talks orhaving no US involvementatall.

More than half(58%)ofGranite Staters supportthe removalofSyrian PresidentBasharal-Assad.Fieen percentoppose Assad's removalfrom powerwhile more than a quarter(28%)are neutralordon'tknow.

Unlike mostcurrentissues,opinion on Assad's removalis not ed to parsanship:58% ofDemocrats,45% ofIndependents,and 64% of Republicans favorAssad's removal.Frequentconservave radio listeners (43% oppose),Gary Johnson voters (40%),and Manchester Area residents (40%)are mostlikely to be neutralornotknow whetherthey supportoroppose the removalofAssad from power.

Granite Staters are divided aboutwhetherTrump has the ability to handle the situaon with North Korea's nuclearprogram;47% are very (22%)orsomewhat(25%)confidentthatTrump can handle North Korea,while 49% are notvery (21%)ornotatallconfident (28%).

MostRepublicans (83%)are confidentin Trump to handle the situaon,butonly 16% ofDemocrats and 49% ofIndependents feelthis way.

North Korea

MostNew Hampshire adults (82%)believe North Korea poses a very (45%)orsomewhat(37%)serious threatto the United States and its allies.Sixteen percentconsiderthe threatto be notvery serious (11%)ornotatallserious (5%)and 3% don'tknow orare unsure.

Parsanship does notappearto play a strong role in how serious a threatrespondents considerNorth Korea to be;more than three-quarters ofDemocrats (84%),Indepedents (78%),and Republicans (79%)each considerNorth Korea to be a very serious or somewhatserious threat.

Those aged 50 to 64 (92%)are mostlikely to say North Korea is a serious threat,while Gary Johnson voters (29%)and those aged 18 to 34 (28%)are mostlikely to say itis a notvery serious ornotatallserious threat.

Granite State PollMethodology

These findings are based on the latestGranite State Poll,conducted by the University ofNew Hampshire Survey Center.Five hundred and eighteen (518)randomly selected New Hampshire adults were interviewed in English by landline and cellulartelephone between April24 and May 4,2017.The margin ofsampling errorforthe survey is +/-4.3 percent.These MSE’s have notbeen adjusted fordesign effect.The design effectforthe survey is 1.2%.

The random sample used in the Granite State Pollwas purchased from Markeng Systems Group (MSG),Horsham,PA.MSG screens each selected telephone numberto eliminate non-working numbers,disconnected numbers,and business numbers to improve the efficiency ofthe sample,reducing the amountof me interviewers spend calling non-usable numbers.

The data have been weighted to adjustfornumbers ofadults and telephone lines within households.Addionally,data were weighted by respondentsex,age,educaon,and region ofthe state to targets from the mostrecentAmerican Community Survey (ACS) conducted by the U.S.Census Bureau.In addion to potenalsampling error,allsurveys have otherpotenalsources ofnon-sampling errorincluding queson ordereffects,queson wording effects,and non-response.Due to rounding,percentages may notsum to 100%.The numberofrespondents in each demographic below may notequalthe numberreported in cross-tabulaon tables as some respondents choose notto answersome quesons.
