Co-curricular Activities

1. Avishkar: State Level Research Competition

Following students of C.U. Shah College of Pharmacy received awards at Avishkar-2013, held at North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon, January 7-9, 2014

• Ms. Shilpa Vijayraghavan won the First prize under Pure Science category (Ph. D. level)

• Ms. Darshana Jain won the Second prize under Engineering & Technology category (Ph. D. level)

2. Cultural Programmes A. SNDTWU Yuva Mahotsav

The Department of Students Welfare has been organizing, Yuva Mahotsav, an annual cultural programme since 1975, with the prime motive to create awareness and pride amongst the youth about our rich cultural heritage and to promote national integration. This festival highlights the traditional folk art of our country which reflects the rich and diverse Indian culture. Through the medium of performing arts, fine arts and literary events, the University harnesses the power of art for sensitizing the student community about current social and national issues. During each academic year this mega festival is conducted where students get an enormous platform and a sparkling opportunity to showcase their talents. The program was celebrated at grand scale.

The events are classified into following broad categories:

i. Literary events:

This broad category had competitions which evaluated intelligence of the students. Some of the competitions were quiz, elocution, debate etc. For the students who possess extra-ordinary strength to bring about a change through their writing skills, events like poetry recitation and essays are conducted.

ii. Music events:

They say music is the language of the heart and it requires no script to perform. Students from all over the nation sang in different tones and compositionsand won many hearts and appreciation. The events under these categories included Western and Indian classical solo and group songs and instrumental.

iii. Dance:

India being rich in tradition and culture possesses diversity in the fields of dance too. Students performed varied dance forms right from classical to folk.

iv. Fine Arts:

The students showcased their visual creativity under this category. The events were clay modelling, rangoli, on the spot painting and photography.

v. Theatre:

Some of the most marvellous performances were witnessed here. The students proved that they can excel not only in their academics but also in intricate fields like drama and mimicry.

Yuva Mahotsav has its four regional levels as elimination rounds conducted prior to the Grand Finale. The colleges under the university are distributed into regions as per convenience and students are selected at these regional competitions held in every state.

Co-curricular Activities

North Maharashtra

Yuva Mahotsav commenced from North Region with the collaboration of Shahada Co-op Education Society’s, Mahila Arts and Commerce College, Shahada, Dist-Nandurbar during August 23-24, 2013. Adv. Padmakar Valvi, Hon’ble Minister, Youth Welfare and Sports, inaugurated the function in presence of the President of the Institution. Approximately 400 students participated in different events like Music, Theatre, Dance, Fine Arts, and Literary Events. Overall 26 events were conducted by the college. Dr. Sanjay Aparanti, S. P. Nandurbar District was present for the valedictory program.

The West Maharashtra Regional Youth Festival was held on Aug 27-28, 2013 at SNDT Arts and Commerce College, Pune. Ms. Sheela Satyanarayan, Commissioner, State Election Commission, Maharashtra State was the Chief Guest.

Approximately 400 students from West Maharashtra and Konkan regions participated in around 26 Events.

Mumbai and Gujrat Region Yuva Mahotsav

Mumbai, Gujarat and MP regional Youth Festival was organized by SNDT Arts and Commerce College, Churchgate on Sept. 6-7, 2013. Approximately 1000-1100 students participated in the events. Ms. Trupti Bhoir, Producer of Marathi Film and Mr. Vishwas Nagare Patil, Addl. Commissioner of Police, Maharashtra and Registrar, Dr. S. Kumudhavalli were present for the valedictory program.

SNDTWU Yuva Mahotsav Grand Finale

The Grand Finale Yuva Mahotsav was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Dr. Atul Salunke, State Liaison Officer, NSS Maharashtra and presided over Dr. Madhura Kesarkar, BCUD Director, SNDT Women’s University on September 26, 2013 at 9.00 am in the Patkar Hall, Churchgate Campus. 26 events were organized under 5 categories in Yuva Mahotsav Grand Finale. The participants were from the Winners of the 3 Regional Youth Festivals. In this event more than 38 colleges participated in various events. Approximately 800 students and more than 100 accompanists and coordinators of different colleges were present for this programme.

The Valedictory function was held on September 27, 2013 and the Chief Guest was Adv. Nirmala Samant-Prabhavalkar, Member, National Commission for Women, New Delhi. Special Guest was Dr. Rashmi Karandikar, Superintendent of Police, (HSP) Maharashtra State and Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Vandana Chakrabarti presided over the function.

B. Indradhanushya: Maharashtra State Level Inter University Cultural Competition

The University team of 40 members participated in the 13th Indradhanushya State Level Inter University Cultural Competition, which was held at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University, Lonere, Dist. Raigad from December 6-11, 2013. The University team secured Second Position at the Festival after competing with 19 Universities and the following prizes were won:

National Youth Festival was held at Kurukshetra University, Haryana from February 18-22, 2014. A team of 10 students participated in One Act Play. SNDT Women’s University team received III prize in One Act Play.

3. Tejaswini Contest 2013-14

The Department of Students’ Welfare conducted the Tejaswini Contest for the year 2013-14 from January 21-23, 2014 at Churchgate Campus. Approximately 75 students participated in the contest from all the SNDT colleges, of Mumbai, Maharashtra, Gujarat and MP.

During these three days the contestant had to participate in various competitions to test their Body, Mind and Spirit. The competitions were- Quiz, Essay writing, Extempore Speech, Physical fitness test, Group Discussion, Personal Interview and Open Interview. The contestants underwent these tests and were qualified for the final round on January 23, 2014.

4. NCC

The SNDT Women’s University was the 1st to enroll for NCC in the year 1958. SNDT Arts and Commerce College, Churchgate had honoured to raise the 1st unit in the university. Capt. Munim was the 1st lady officer to look after NCC unit and served up to 1965. Further serving name of the Lady Officers, their duration and cadets strength are as follows:

Vice Chancellor’s Banner

This Banner competition was started in the year 1995 on the basis of best NCC training and performance. Every year Banner is being presented by Honorable Vice-Chancellor of the University to the best performing unit (College). This presentation ceremony is held on the occasion of ‘NCC Day’ at Colaba. For the year 2013-2014 this prestigious Banner was awarded to Smt. M. M. P. Shah College, Matunga for their excellent performance.

National Level Participation 1. Republic Day Camp Delhi:

During NCC tenure every cadets have dream to attend Republic Day Camp at Delhi. Selection for this All India Camp is very difficult and cadet has to go through a multi talented selection level. Cadet Dipti Salunkhe and Cadet Aparna Satwadhir, from SPN Doshi College, Ghatkopar represented Maharashtra Directorate at Delhi.

2. National Integration Camp (NIC)

This camp was held in NAGALAND from 18th June to 29th June 2013. This camp was organized by NCC Directorate, Maharashtra. Two Cadets from SNDT Arts and Commerce College, Churchgate and M.D. Shah College, Malad participated in this Camp.

Achievements:

01. 1st Prize Gold Medal (Best piloting):JUO. Surbhi Jagtap 02. 1st Prize Gold Medal (Singing) : JUO. Neetu Rajak.

03. 1st in kho-kho, discipline award, solo Dance, Best cadets in environmental discipline, best pilots, best Guard of Honor, (the team was guided by Lt. Nazia Sayyed)

3. National Integration Camp Bihar (Buddh Gaya):

This camp was held in Bihar from 16th to 27th October 2013. 5 cadets from Shri M.D.Shah Mahila College, Malad represented Maharashtra directorate in Bihar NIC.

Achievements:

Won all India Best Cadet Award overall India (SUO Priyanka Salvi), 1st in Quiz competition

4. State Level Participation

Thal Sainik Camp (TSC): This camp is also a part of Republic Day Camp. In this camp cadets are participating in various competitions i.e. Rifle Shooting, Map Reading, Obstacle, Health & Hygiene.

TSC-Pune was organised by Maharashtra Directorate from17th Aug to 26th Aug2013. Cadets participated from SNDT Arts and Commerce College, Churchgate were Cdt. Aabra Kanoor and Cdt Sneha Avachite.

1. Five cadets had participated from Smt.S.P.N. Doshi College. They are: JUO. Sona Wane Aditi, CSM Swati Patil, CQMS Jyoti Vadepalli, CPL Pinky Pal and SGT Soni Laxmi

2. Two Cadets had participated from Smt. M.M.P.Shah College. They are: SUO Ayesha Khan and Cdt Neelam Yadav 3. Two Cadets had participated from Unit Pune.

5. Republic Day Camp -2 (Aurangabad)

This camp was organised by Aurangabad group from 7th November to 16th November 2013.

01. Two Cadets, SUO. Mamta Chaurasiya and Cdt Kiran Ingoli participated from SNDT Arts and Commerce College, Churchgate.

02. Three cadets, SUO Mamta Achewane, JUO Aditi Sonawane and Cdt. Mohini Phadtare had participated from Smt.S.P.N. Doshi College.

6. Medical Attachment Camp

This camp was organised by Group-A Mumbai at Ashwini Hospital, Colaba from 21st May to 2nd June 2013. Seven Cadets participated from SNDT Arts and Commerce College, Churchgate.

Achievements:

Cdt Krutika Nagar stood 2nd in exam and won Silver Medal. One cadet participated in Hospital Attachment Camp Southern Command in Wanavadi, Pune.

7. Adventure Training at college level

01. Adventure training programme was conducted by SPN Doshi unit at Matheran Neral on August 28, 2013. 80 cadets were trained for hiking, rock climbing, valley crossing and commando bridge. All cadets enjoyed and learned different type of adventure training.

02. Rajmachi hiking and trekking programme at Kondana Caves Karjat was conducted by M.D.Shah unit for 56 Cdts on 21st August 2013.

8. Annual Training Camps:

Every year NCC Battalion arranges Annual Training Camp and all cadets go through their regular camp training. In this camp cadets learn practical part of NCC Syllabus. The motto of this camp is to inculcate group spirit, leadership, adventure and also to develop personality of cadets. Cadets also learn sportsmanship through participating in different competitions.

In the year 2013-14 it was conducted from 19th Oct to 28th Oct 2013. From SNDT Arts and Commerce College Churchgate, 10 Cadets attended the camp held at Andheri (Marol). Following prizes were won:

• 2nd Prize in Solo Song: Cdt. Ashawini Pujari.

• 2nd Prize in Dance:Cdt. Meghana Kumbhar.

9. NCC Day Camp

This camp was organised by Maharashtra Directorate at R.C. Church, Colaba from 16th Nov to Nov 25, 2013. In this camp 40 cadets participated in various activities, such as; Piloting, Guard of Honour, Group dance, Parade and Flag area presentation. NCC cadets from all 3 wings; Army, Navy and Air presented different demonstrations and cultural programmes.

10. Social Activities

NCC provides various type of social awareness training. Aims of the training are to inculcate social responsibility in the cadets and also make them understand the social problems by conducting different programs.

01. Cycle Expedition

As per every year Smt.MMP Shah college conducted cycle expedition from Matunga to Yusuf Meherali centre on the occasion of ‘Bal Din’ i.e. 14th November with ‘Save the Earth’ theme. 38 cadets successfully completed. The expedition was flaged off by Col. Saurav Gupta, Group Commander of Mumbai-A group.

02. Tree Plantation

• On 16th July 2013, 10 cadets participated in Tree Plantation programme organised by Smt.P.N.Doshi college in college premises. 10 saplings were planted. Chief guest for the programme were Smt. Kusum Dharamshi, Incharge Principal and Ms.Jyotsana Dhruv Vice Principal.

• On 30th March 2014, 11 cadets participated in Tree plantation programme which was organised by Smt. MMP Shah College, Wadala.

• On 30th Aug 2013 Unit of SNDT Company -1 had Tree plantation in S.V.T.College (Juhu Campus). 60 cadets planted 15 saplings.

• Unit of M.D.Shah College 10 cadets had planted 30 plants in college, under Tree plantation programme.

03. Beach Cleaning

After visarjan of Ganesh Idol 35 cadets cleaned the Beach at Girgaon Chowpatty.

04. Pulse Polio (September 26, 2013)

• 12 cadets of SNDT company-1 attended pulse polio drive at CST Railway station

• 5 cadets of SPN Doshi college, Ghatkopar attended the drive at Ghatkopar Railway station.

05. Blood Donation drive (November 25, 2013)

• Blood donation camp was organised by VISION 2020 at Ghatkopar in collaboration with Rajawadi Hospital. 20 cadets form SNDT University Coy-1 Participated in the blood donation. 15 cadets donated blood from M.D.Shah College.

06. Anti Drugs programme (June 28, 2013)

On the occasion International Day against Drugs Abuse and Illicit Trafficking programme this programme was conducted by 8 Maharashtra Girls Bn.NCC at MMP Shah College auditorium. The programme was successfully observed in the presence of NCC Officials of Mumbai and A group and 250 cadets. The chief guest for the program was none other then Major General Yashwant Singh, Additional Director General of Maharashtra Directorate.

07. NCC Examinations

This year total 114 cadets appeared for ‘B’ certificate exam held at Shri.M.D.Shah Mahila college, Malad. 110 cadets cleared the exam and 22 cadets secured ‘A’ grade, 29 cadets appeared for ‘C’ certificate exam held at I.Y.College, Jogeshwari. All the cadets cleared the exam and 11 cadets secured ‘A’ grade.

1. Achievements

Utkarsha Social and Cultural Competition

The SNDT Women’s University, NSS unit has got success in UTKARSHA 2013 organized by NSS, Maharashtra at Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune from 14th to 16th December 2013. Ms. Chitra Lele, NSS Programme Officer, SNDT Arts and Commerce College, Churchgate was the Team Manager. The Results are as follows:

National Integration Camp for Women

The National Integration Camp for women was hosted by Government of Karnataka, NSS Cell, Youth Empowerment and Sports Department and National Service Scheme Cell, Karnataka State Women’s University, Bijapur from January 30- February 5, 2014. A contingent of 10 volunteers and 1 Programme Officer (PO) was invited from Maharashtra, Kerala, West Bengal, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh. In addition, the camp hosted NSS volunteers and POs from universities all over Karnataka. In all about 105 NSS female volunteers and 10POs were present at the camp.

2. AVHAN- 2013 Chancellor Brigade

As per the directives received from the Secretary to Governor, the responsibility to organize the State level Disaster Management preparedness training camp:AVHAN, The Chancellor Brigade has been given to NSS from the year 2011-12. As proposed by the State NSS Cell, selected 30 NSS Volunteers for each District from different Universities formed as squad of each district to work with the District level Disaster Management Cell for the year. These NSS volunteers from each district received training at Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded from June 6-11, 2013. The team Manager was Ms. Surekha Gaikwad, Assistant Professor, G.E.I, College, Dombivli.

3. 4th Indian Student Parliament

The NSS Volunteers represented SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai at 4th Student Parliament at MAEER’s MIT School of Government Pune, from January 10-12, 2014. They were accompanied by NSS P.O. Ms. Anjali Kadam, from SNDT Arts and Commerce College, Pune.

4. Leadership Camp 2013-14

Leadership Camps were organized in all the zones in the month of January and February 2014. The Special emphasis in these camps were on NSS Activity details, Volunteer’s role, utilization of its funds, NSS special camp Activities, funding Project/Programs of the NSS, Know yourself sessions, Developing Leadership Qualities, Effective Communication Skills, Problem Solving Skills, Team Building activities and games, Responsible sexual behavior and sexual health, Value Education, Need to Protect Environment, Stop Gender Discrimination, Self Defense etc.

Road Safety Campaign was organized by Maharashtra Highway Police and NSS Department in the month of January 2014. Ms. Anjali Kadam, Programme Officer, SNDT Arts and Commerce College, Pune was awarded consolation prize and cash prize of Rs.12,500/-.

6. Voter ID Campaign

SNDT Women’s University had actively conducted Voter ID Campaign called ‘VOTEATHON’ with the help of NGO

“Volunteer for a Better Tomorrow” in all the Colleges and P.G Departments. More than 10,000 students were registered and other Colleges had given the tremendous support to this campaign.

The University had also actively participated in SVEEP (Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation) program.

NSS Cell had circulated the details of the program in all the conducted, affiliated College and P.G. Depts.

7. National Youth Policy Program

NSS Unit of P.N. Doshi College, Ghatkopar conducted a program on National Youth Policy 2014 on 26/02/2014.

Our University participated at the XVII Maharashtra State Inter University Ashwamedh (Krida) Sports Meet –2013-14 from November 27-December 1, 2013 at Maharashtra Health Science University, Nashik in the games of Volleyball, Basketball, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho & Athletics. The students achieved a lot of social interaction with students from other Universities. The teams secured IV Place Kho–Kho & Kabaddi.

E. Cycle Expedition

25 students from SNDT Arts & Commerce & Home Science Colleges, Pune participated in the Cycle Expedition from December 22, 2013 to January 12, 2014 from Pune to Kanyakumari. The students were extremely fit and cycled all the way without any difficulty. This unique Girls Cycling Rally was highly successful. The Rally terminated at the Swami Vivekanand Memorial, Kanyakumari. The Cycle Rally was conducted by the SNDT Arts & Commerce College, Pune under the leadership of Prof. Ms. Vasanti Joshi and Sports Teachers, Ms. Radhika Raut and Ms. Meena Thombre.

F. Sports Council of Usha Mittal Institute of Technology

UMIT has an active sports council which Encourages students to participate in various intra and inter-collegiate indoor and outdoor games. The students of Usha Mittal Institute of Technology have enthusiastic Cricket, Volleyball, Kho-Kho, Throw Ball, Table Tennis and badminton teams who have won laurels for the Institute in various Inter University and Inter-Collegiate sports events. The Institute with the help of the department of Physical Education–SNDT University regularly organizes treks and adventure sport camps for its students. The Sports council of Usha Mittal Institute of Technology this year took an Initiative to organise the first Inter Collegiate Sports Festival ‘XUBERANCE’ in view to encourage Women in the field of Sports. 20 colleges across Mumbai Participated in this Tournament in various events like Basketball, Volleyball, Throw ball, Badminton, Carom and Chess.

7. Technology related Activities

A. Computer Society of India (CSI) –UMIT

The Computer Society of India is one of the largest professional societies in India with over 20,000 members spanning more than 60 chapters and 70 student branches all over India. Usha Mittal Institute of Technology established a CSI Student chapter in the year 1998. The past eleven years have witnessed numerous students of UMIT benefit by their association. The CSI-UMIT chapter also has the distinction of being awarded the best Chapter award in 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2004-05 and in 2008-09. The Chapter organizes seminars, talks, Industrial Visits and also publishes its Technical magazine “Paradigm” and a bi-monthly magazine “Tecnovation”. CSI also hosts the popular inter-collegiate technical fest “Abhivyakti” every year.

¾ ABHIVYAKTI: The Inter-collegiate festival of CSI UMIT chapter was held on 11th and 12th of October, 2013. The 2 days fest comprised of technical and non-technical events. Ms. Gayathri Parathasathy, was the key note speaker, Mr. M.

B. SNDT-ACM Student’s Chapter

¾ ACM-Association for Computing Machinery- founded in 1947, based in New York, USA, is the oldest body of computer professionals in the worlds. The Computer Science, Engineering and Management students of SNDT Women’s University established the chapter for themselves in the year 1999.

C. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)- UMIT

The Students Chapter of IEEE was formed in December 1999 with 44 members. The efforts and dedication towards the smallest of tasks under the IEEE banner has led to the chapter being recognized as one of the best chapters in the Mumbai division. With a number of inter/intra collegiate contests, publications, seminars, workshops etc. the chapter has provided its members with opportunity that they can display their technical skills as well as help them transform into more professional and technically sound individuals thus preparing them to face the world outside.

Seminar on Soft skills development and preparing a CV: On September 17, 2013. The key speaker of the seminar was Mr.

Kashif Memon.

¾ Android App Development Workshop: The 2-day workshop was conducted on September 21-22, 2013.

¾ IEEE Day:On October 1, 2013 IEEE UMIT conducted a technical quiz for the IEEE members to celebrate the IEEE day.

The four branches- CST, EE, ENC and IT were pit against each other.

¾ Aptitude Test: IEEE UMIT conducts aptitude tests every year so that the members can test their abilities and know where they stand.

¾ One Day IV to Pune: IEEE UMIT conducted a one-day IV to Pune on October 26, 2013. We visited ACCENTURE to give the students an insight into industrial working.

¾ Ethical Hacking: The Ethical Hacking Workshop was conducted by CyberCure Solutions on January 18-19, 2014.

¾ 360 Degrees: IEEE 360 Degrees is a collaborative festival jointly held and organized by collaborativelyby multiple colleges in order to give students a better platform to showcase their talent viavarious workshops and technical as well as non-technical events.

D. ELITE-UMIT

Elite, the Entrepreneurship Cell of UMIT is a National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN) initiative. NEN is a global organization that aims to encourage budding entrepreneurs and provides them with a suitable platform. For this reason, they have formed E Cells in management as well as engineering colleges. Through inspiring seminars and new, innovative festivals, Elite is trying to create an entrepreneurial spirit among students and help them develop a strong management base along with their technical skills. of all the Elite activities, most popular is the E-Week celebration in the first week of February that is celebrated in NEN E Cells all over India. Ennovation, the intra collegiate fest that boasts of the largest participation in UMIT is held on the last Saturday of E Week. This year Ennovation saw the release of Elite’s first management themed magazine “Unleashed”.
