Hello! We would like to say thank you to everyone for helping make your child’s first days at Wash- ington Middle School a success! We have gotten off to a great start this year, and we all look for- ward to seeing it continue.

So far our students have been doing a great job adjusting to middle school. We have seen mainly positive attitudes towards school and towards each other. Please encourage your child to keep up the great efforts and have a positive attitude at school.

Hopefully you have seen your child’s planner at home. Each student should be writing down the daily objective and any assignments they may have in their planner on a daily basis. They should be bringing these home so they know, and you know, which assignments they have. Asking your child to see their planner is another great way to know what they are doing and reinforcing that they fill it out and use it. Thanks in advance for doing this.

It is hard to believe, but parent/teacher conferences will also be coming up in the near future. You will be getting instructions on how to sign up sent to you at home, so please be looking for these. We would like to meet as many parents as possible.

Thanks again,

6th Grade Red House Teachers

Welcome to October

We had our first Box Pass celebration. Those students who did not leave the classroom for forgotten supplies, bathroom trips, etc. enjoyed a slice of pizza and a can of soda. If a couple of passes had been used then the student received a can of soda. It pays to be in class!

The White House would like to thank all of you who purchased a White House T-shirt. It was a successful fundraiser and we were able to make a little over $200.00. This helps us to provide box pass celebration items, field trip reduced costs and anything that helps our kids.

Please note that Parent Teacher Conferences are begining on October 15th and continue next week. You should have received notification on how to set up a conference. If a translator is needed, please sign up right away.

Our first Student of the Month Celebration took place in September. We would like to acknowledge Lukas Fonder, Tywinn Scott, Ryan Kopidlansky, Monica Carlos-Macias, Marisol Rodriguez-Sanchez, Orlando Garcia Diaz and Juan Grajeda as the first to be rec- ognized as leaders in our house. Congratulations.

We also recognized all of the students who celebrated birthdays in Septem- ber and October.

Welcome to UWGB Phuture Phoenix student, Ms Cline, who is working in Mrs. LeMense's morning classes on Mondays and Wednesdays this semeste

It has been a great start of the new school year for White House! You can’t beat the Heat.

ELL News

Hello everyone! We would first like to thank everyone for helping the school year get off to a great start. Your dedication to your child makes the start of the year go much smoother.

It is recommended that you do your best to encourage your child to keep caught up on their homework as the year starts. They should all be filling out their as- signment notebook with both objectives and assignments on a daily basis. This is a great way to check what they did during the day. It is important to get all students into this routine early on.

Also as the weather changes and starts to cool down, please be sure your child is coming to school in weather appropriate clothing. Many rooms can get cold, so dressing in layers is recommended.

Even though school seems to have just started it is already time to start thinking about parent/teacher conferences that will be taking place in the near future.

Please be looking for this information coming in the mail so you can get sched- uled to talk about your child’s success here at Washington Middle School.

Translators will be available for those who need them. If you can’t make the conference dates, feel free to contact any teachers to schedule a meeting at a dif- ferent time.

You will also notice there have been some very nice improvements made to the school. The main office has been completed and the main entrance is back up and running. You will now be entering the school through the office.

Thank you for everything you do in your child’s life to make a difference,

ELL department

Cold & Flu Season

With the cold and flu season upon us, as a school community it is important that we recognize our responsibilities to help each other stay healthy.

Our District staff will work to ensure that our buildings are clean and that we take all appro- priate precautions to ensure the health and safety of all students. Should the Department of Health communicate with the District regarding communicable diseases, we will continue to share that information with all families.

Earlier this school year, the District did communicate about a student who had been confirmed with viral meningitis. While this is not an illness that is required to be reported to the Depart- ment of Health, due to the heightened concerns surrounding a child’s death related to viral meningitis, the District determined it was important to communicate about the illness. In the following days information regarding viral meningitis was widely distributed by the Depart- ment of Public Health informing families about symptoms and preventative measures.

Moving forward the District will continue to follow its normal protocol. Our District nurses are in contact with the Department of Health and the District will act in accordance with its guidelines and recommendations.

Everyone has a role in keeping our school community healthy. Keeping children home when they are ill is one important way to keep students healthy and learning. Students should stay home if they are vomiting or have diarrhea; have a cough that disrupts normal activity; have a fever; are distracted due to an earache, headache or sore throat; or have a contagious disease such as pinkeye, chickenpox or strep throat.

The best defense against cold and flu season is good hand washing and covering one’s mouth when sneezing or coughing. Our staff will continue to encourage good hand washing in school, especially with our younger students.

Together we can keep our school healthy and our students learning.
