What is Vaastu ?

Figure of Vastu Purusha (explained towards end of this page)

The term Vastu is a Sanskrit word which means "Bhu" or the Earth and is the underlying stratum of existence. As per a Vedic Hymn "Vastu reva Vastu", all material forms of the Universe are all energies.Vaasthu sastra states that every energy has life and nothing in universe is left out without any vibration.Every material in the Universe radiates some energy at its own specific frequencies. This energy may be positive or negative. Positive energy is beneficial and negative is harmful. Vaastu aims at maximising the generation and accumulation of positive energy around the humans and minimise the negative energy. This is done by ensuring the abundance of the

following :

Light - Sufficient natural light for comfortable living.

Air - Pure fresh air continuously blowing in and out of the house. Water - for drinking and living.

Energy concentration of different shapes and forms by using proper positive material.

The proper alignment of the rooms with proportionate sizes harmonizes the energies and it gives peace of mind to those who live in that premises. In short vaasthu harmonizes the cosmic forces and makes life pleasant to live.

Vaastu is an ancient science which lays down certain Astrological rules and regulations about the direction, construction, designing and decoration of a house for the benefit of the occupants.

The recommendations are based on certain rules & regulations, perfected over hundreds of years by our great Sages.

Vaastu also takes into consideration factors like profession, age, marital status, children etc. of the occupants, location & direction of the house/ plot where house is to constructed, as well as location & direction of various segments in the house like bedroom, lounge, kitchen, bathrooms, corridors etc.

What is Vastu ?

Vaastu is an ancient Indian science of architecture and buildings which helps in making a congenial setting or a place to live and work in a most scientific way taking advantage of the benefits bestowed

(3)

by nature, its elements and energy fields for enhanced wealth, health, prosperity and happiness. Vastu Shastra unifies the science, art, astronomy and astrology, it can also be said as an ancient mystic science for designing and building. Vastu Shastra helps us to make our lives better and will

secure from things going wrong.

Vaastu is the science of direction that combines all the five elements of nature and balance them with the man and the material. Vaastu Shastra is creating a congenial settings or a place to live or work, in most scientific way taking advantages of the benefits bestowed by the five elements called "Paanchbhootas" of the nature thereby paving the way for enhanced health, wealth, prosperity and

happiness in an enlightened environment.

Our sages and seers have knew the secrets of using all the five elements of this universe and their special characteristics and influences such as the magnetic field, gravitational effect etc. of Earth, the galaxy in the sky, the directions and velocity of the winds, light and heat of the SUN including the effects of its Ultra-Violet and Infra-Red rays, the volume and intensity of rainfall etc. for the advantage of the mankind in suitably planning and constructing buildings for dwelling, prayer, entertainment , education , working , production and other purposes . They evolved scientific methods and systems and confined them over the years as 'VAASTU SHASTRA'. Our sages SEARCHED it; we are only

RESEARCHING it and building the concepts.

Man is the subject, object and the cause of architecture. He perceives and conceives architecture in relation to his experience of himself with the surrounding world. Through art of design, he alters and moulds the elements of natural environment. The world comprises of five basic elements, also known as the Paanchbhootas. They are Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Space. Out of the nine planets, our planet has life because of the presence of these five elements. Earth and Water have limited and localized availability for the human habitat and growth. They form apparent and fundamental choice makers in the location and the physical form of architecture and habitat. Sun, Air and Space are universally available and can be moulded to human needs by the act of design. In order to understand the act of design with these five elements, we shall have to take each one separately to appreciate their

meaning, role, and workability in architecture.

(1) EARTH (Bhumi): - Earth, the third planet in order from the sun, is a big magnet with North and South poles as centers of attractions. Its magnetic field and gravitational force has telling effects on everything on the Earth, living and non-living. It is tilted by about 23 ½ degrees at the meridian. It comprises of the land structure, landform, landscape, flora and fauna. It also establishes availability of local construction materials and their workability. In India, we worship our Bhumi and give her a place

of our mother.

(2) WATER (Jal): - This is represented by rain, river, sea and is in the form of liquid, solid (ice) and gas (steam, cloud). It forms part of every plant and animal. Our blood is nothing but water with hemoglobin and oxygen. The habitat and physical life are where water is present. This is true for all life forms and eco-cultures. The type, form and pattern of life also greatly depend on relationship of earth and water. If we see our history, all the cultures had developed on the bank of any water bodies, so this shows the influence of the water on our life, since ages. (3) AIR (Vaayu): - As a life-supporting element, air is very powerful life source. Pure air with oxygen is good for brain and blood. Atmosphere of earth which is about 400 kms. , In depth, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon-di-oxide, Helium, other gases, dust particles, humidity and vapour in certain proportions. Human physical comfort values are directly and sensitively dependent on correct humidity, airflow, and temperature of air, air pressure, air composition and its content. In this aspect, air deals with the entire body surface through skin, blood system - through respiration. Air also

represents the movement.

(4) FIRE (Sun): - It represents light and heat without which the life will extinct. All the days and nights, seasons, energy, enthusiasm, passion, vigour is because of light and heat only. Sun is a source of mental energy too. Best minds evolve in a natural process where the sun was temperate. Not very hot, not very cold, just the right temperature of 24 degrees. The different zones with the variety of climate have distinctive culture and architecture. Sun has played an important role in development of

(4)

visual qualities of architecture in terms of textures, colors and above all the expressions of vitality. (5) SPACE (Aakash): - All the above elements are skillfully engineers towards the creation of physically comfortable, emotionally pleasant, intellectually determinant, totally vibrant and blissfully satisfying spaces for human shelter and habitat. It is unending regions remote from the earth, in which not only our solar system but the entire galaxy exists. Its effective forces are light, heat, gravitational force and waves, magnetic field and others. The ideal habitats, cultures, architecture and life have naturally shown exhilarence where all the five elements, to support life, are abundantly available and are suitable to human growth and evolution. This is an invisible and constant relation between these elements outside and those within an individual and in his living and working places. Thus, the man can improve his conditions by properly designing his buildings by understanding the effectiveness of these five natural forces.

What is Vastu Purusha Mandal?

In order to understand Vaastu Shastra, it is necessary to understand the Vaastu Purusha Mandala, which is energy grid of square. The Vaastu Purusha Mandala is the basic form in architecture and all other figures are derived from this elementary design. We can understand vaastupurush better with the following image:

(5)

It provides the method that determines the requirements of architecture in relation to its directions. Each direction is allotted a particular role by the Vaasturatnakara. Every part of the Vaastu Purusha's body is sacred and contains energies that help us in living a contented and peaceful life. Each work has its nature and features. Aforesaid knowledge gives us the appropriate direction for a desired work such as where and how to construct a room, outer structure and interior arrangement of rooms according to the nature of work so that we do our work without any problem and handedness.

This knowledge tells us about the nature and work of directions and what kind of work is to be done in which direction. Vaastu knowledge advices what kind of work is best in which directions at where it is medium, normal or average and which direction is prohibited for concerned work. Vaastu Purusha is present in each and every plot whether it is big or small. It has a fixed and peculiar body. Its head remains hanging down and its body is spread all over the length and breadth of the ground. There is an interesting story in the MATSYA PURANA in which the birth of the Vaastu Purusha is narrated. By reading that story, one knows why the worship of the Vaastu Purusha is necessary before beginning the construction of any house.

While fighting with the demon, Shiva was very much tired and began to sweat profusely. A man was born from the drops of the sweat of Shiva. He looked very cruel. He was very hungry. So he began to make penance to

appease Lord Shiva and get a boon from Him.

Shiva was pleased with his penance and appeared before him. The devotee prayed to Shiva, "Oh Lord! Please permit me to eat away all the three worlds." Shiva said, "Let it be so." The joy of that devotee knew no bounds. He got possession on all the three worlds and first he was ready to eat the terrestrial world. Then the celestial beings, Brahma, Shiva and the demons (Rakshasas) also were terrified and caught hold of the devotee encircling him.

Forty-five celestial beings, out of whom 32 from without and 13 from within caught hold of the devotee. The Thirty-two celestial beings are- (1) ISH (2) PAROJAYA (3) JAYANT (4) INDRA (5) SURYA (6) SADYA (7) BARISHAM (8) AKASH (9) AGNI (10) PUSHNA (11) VITATHA (12) YAMA (13) KRITANTA (14) GANDHARVA (15) BRINGAVAJA (16) MRIGA (17) PITARA

(6)

(18) DAREPALE (19) SUGRIVA (20) PUSHPADANTA (21) VARUNA (22) DAITYA (23) SESHA (24) YAKSHMA (25) ROGA (26) NAGA (27) MUKHYA (28) BHALLATA (29) SOMA (30) SARPA (31) ADITI and DITI. All these 32 celestial beings are out of the limits of the devotee whereas the

following 13 Beings are within his limits:-

(1) BRAHMA (2) RUDRA (3) INDRAJAYA (4) APAVATSA (5) MARICHI (6) SAVITRI (7) VIVASWAN (8) VISHNU (9) MITRA (10) SAVITA (11)

PRITHVIDHARA (12) RUDRA and (13) APA.

These celestial Beings laid force on the different limbs of the devotee and sat

on them as shown below:

ISH (AGNI) - head; APA - face; PRITHWI DHARA & ARYAM - Chest; AVANTSA - heart; DITI & INDRA - Shoulders; SURYA & SOMA - Hands; RUDRA & RAJAYAKSHMA - left arm; SAVITRA & SAVITA - right arm; VIVASWAN & MITRA - Stomach; PUSHA & ARYAMA - Wrist; ASUR & SESHA - left side; VITATHA & GRAHAKSHAT - right side; YAMA & VARUNA - Thighs; GANDHARVA & PURAMADAN - on the knees; SUGRIV & BHRISH - shanks; DWARIKA & MRIGA - ankles; JAYA & SHAKRA - on the hairs grown on the

feet; BRAHMA - on the heart.

Being bound like that, the devotee laid down there only. Since then, he has been lying there surrounded by the celestial Beings and thus he is known as

"the God of Vaastu or VAASTU PURUSHA".

"You will be known as `VASTUPURUSHA'. You will tease the people who construct buildings and temples, dig wells and tanks on the side towards which you see and in the direction towards which you hold your feet, to your heart's content. You may trouble and even devour those people who construct the aforesaid buildings and temples etc. in the direction where you lay your head and back and those who lay foundation stone without worshipping you or without satisfying you with `Homa' and the like. Then the Vaastu Purusha was quite satisfied. Since then the worship of Vaastu-Purusha has been in vogue and it has become compulsory for those who

want to construct any kind of building. "

Vaastu Purusha, being arrested like this, said to the Gods, "Oh Celestial Beings! You have all caught hold of me and tied me on all the sides. How long shall I be like this, in this position hanging my head down like a prisoner? What shall I eat?" Listening to these words, the celestial Beings said, "Today is Bhadrapada Shukla Triteeya Saturday and `Visakha Star'; So, you lie down here on the ground changing your position once in three months, i.e. from `Bhadrapada' to `Kartik' you lie down putting your head in the Eastern direction and your feet towards the West. During the months of

(7)

`Margashira', `Pushyam' and `Magha', you lie down towards the South looking towards the West and put your feet towards the North. During the months of `Phalgun', `Chaitra' and `Vaisakh', put your head towards the West and feet towards the East looking towards the North. In the months of `Jyeshtha', `Ashadha' and `Sravana', put your head towards the North and the feet towards the South and look towards the East. Whatever side you may turn, you will have to lie down on the left side only.

The diagram bellow, known as Vastu Mandala, illustrates how the Vastu Purusha was pinned down by Brahma and the 44 Gods – face down, with his head to the North East and feet towards South West. It is divided in to 9×9 = 81 parts. These Gods rule various aspects of life and have certain inherent qualities. Hence while constructing a building, the purpose/function of a room must be in tune with the nature of the deity placed and ruling that part. This is illustrated in the next picture. Not many houses are likely to have that many rooms.

Hence adjustments can be made by combining several areas. One noteworthy point is that in the olden days the central portion ruled by Brahma was kept open.

Picture of Vastu Mandala

This picture bellow illustrates how the various places can be ideally utuilised for a house, office or factory. By combining 2 sections each this gives 5×5 = 25 sections.

shape. As far as possible, the site should be slopping towards North & East or Northeast.

BUILDING

While making the building or the house, it is advisable to have equal open space on all four sides. The levels of open spaces should be higher in South & West side and lower in North & East side. Outlets of rainwater should be in Northeast or North zones. According to Vaastu, the most beneficial entrances in the house are those in North

East, East or North direction.

LIVING ROOM

Living Room is best looked in East, North & Northeast directions. The living room of the central zone (Brahmasthan) should be free from any kind of obstructions. By obstructions, we mean any kind of beam, pillar, fixture, toilet, staircase

or even a wall or lift.

BEDROOM

The bedroom according to Vaastu should be in southwest/south or west direction. The direction in which you sleep is also very important. One should never sleep with head in the north. Sleeping with head towards south ensures long life. While on a journey, it is

advisable to sleep with head towards west.

The children‟s bedroom should ideally be in NorthWest. It could be in Southeast & North

as well but never in southwest or south.

If you are fortunate enough in present times to have the luxury of having a separate room for the guests, make the guestroom in Northwest or northeast direction.

KITCHEN

The kitchen of the house is ideally located in Southeast followed by NorthWest & East.

TOILET

Bathrooms & Toilets should be in Northwest of the house or in West or South direction. The bathroom/bathrooms can be either inside or outside the house. In case it is inside, it should be located on the eastern or northern side. (If attached to a bedroom, then to eastern or northern side of the bedroom). When located outside, then it should be in Northeast corner, but away from the main building.

The house or the place where we live can influence our life's happiness,

wealth, health, and prosperity. This truth told by ancient sages ages ago

is known as Vastu Shastra. The Vastu Shastra is the Vedic science of

(11)

building or architecture. Vastu shastra helps us to create buildings that

favorably influence our lives and brings us happiness.

Vastu Shastra considers the astrological location of the Sun, Earth, and

other planets during the construction of any building, be it residential or

commercial. It guides us as to where the building site should be located,

the shape of the site, the proposed shape of the building to be

constructed, the direction the building will face, the location of gates,

doors, windows, and the building’s general design as a whole.

SELECTING A PLOT

It is best to buy land where happy and successful people have lived. A

house sold by a person in distress or who is impoverished, should be

purchased only with caution. A dilapidated or haunted house should not

be purchased at all.The land should be cultivatable. It is best not to build

on nonarable land. Land that contains many rocks, anthills, many

worms, bones, broken pottery, sludge, and thorny trees should not be

purchased. If the center of the land is humped like the shell of a turtle, it

should not be purchased.

The color of the soil should also be considered. White soil is good

forbrahmans (priests,

teachers,

scientists,

or

intellectuals),

red

for ksatriyas(rulers,

soldiers,

or

administrators),

yellow

for vaisyas (businessmen,

farmers

or

bankers),

and

black

for sudras (laborers, artisans, craftsmen, or servants).

Assessing the soil is also important. According to Vastu Shastra, black

and clayey soil is not good for building. If the soil is crumbly rock,

money can easily be gotten. Yellow soil is good for businessmen. It is

usually best not to purchase land next to a bridge. It is also usually best

not to purchase land that shares a well with another property. The land

can be purchased, however, if the water supply is a common well on the

north, east, or northeast side.

A plot of land situated on a hill is also not a good purchase in most

cases. It is better to purchase level ground. If the land to be purchased

is on the side of a hill, however, and the land slopes down toward the

north or east, that is all right. If the land slopes to the west, do not

purchase it.After choosing and purchasing land, plants should be

grown on the land. Also, if possible, keep a cow and her calf on the land

for a while to make it more auspicious.

(12)

Top

THE PLOT

The best shapes for plots of land are square or rectangular. A land tilt of

20 degrees, off square by 20 degrees, is acceptable. If the plot is

rectangular, it is better that the longer sides run north to south rather

than west to east.It is not good to purchase a piece of land squeezed

between two larger pieces of land as such land will bring its owner

poverty.

The northeast side of the land should be the lowest side. The land

should either slope down toward the north or east, but not toward the

west or south. Land sloping north brings riches, sloping east brings

good fortune, sloping south brings ruin, and sloping west brings

financial loss.It is auspicious if tall buildings or hills do not obstruct the

north, northeast, and east sides of the land. Do not purchase land with

such obstructions to those sides because the sun’s rays will be blocked.

A water source located on the southwest side of a building will cause

the owner misery. Similarly, there should be a minimum number of

doors and windows set into the southwest side of a building; the

majority of windows should be set in the northeast side. The boundary

walls around a property should be higher in the west and south and

lower in the north and east.

It is not auspicious if there is an electrical power supply or large electric

pole on the northeast side of the plot. A telephone pole is not negative in

the northeast, however. There should not be any valley, a depression in

the land, or large pit around the land.

Top

LOCATION OF PLOT

The plot or land should not be within twice the distance of the height of

the house to a public place—a hospital, factory, temple, church,

marriage hall, courthouse, cemetery, or cremation grounds. There

should not be a laundry place, shoe shop, meat shop, or workshop with

loud machinery opposite the property.

(13)

The house should be at least 80 feet from the entrance of a temple. The

property’s gate should not face a temple or church, and the shadow of a

temple or church should not fall on the house.

PLOT AND RELATIVE ROADS

A square piece of land surrounded by roads on four sides is considered

very good. A person who owns this land will become wealthy, healthy,

and happy. If a road runs alongside the property and ends at the

northeast corner, that is also very good. If a road ends on any other

parts of the property, however, that plot is usually not good.Land should

also not be next to a T or Y intersection.

A road on the north side of the property is good, but a road on the south

side is not so good. If there is only one road, it is best if it is located on

the east side. It is not so good if it is located on the west side.If there are

roads on only the east and north side, that is good. If there are roads on

the west and north, it is averageIt is inauspicious if there are three roads

only on the east, south,west.

Top

BUILDING MATERIALS FOR CONSTRUCTION

Only new bricks, wood, and materials should be used when building a

new house. Materials from an old building should not be used to build a

new one in case those old materials repeat negative incidents that

occurred in the old house. There is unhappiness in using old things. If

there are old materials available, better to sell them and use the money

to buy new materials.Good quality soil, gravel and cement should be

used.

Wood from thorny trees should not be used, as it will have a negative

effect. Materials that have been stored for a long time should also not be

used. Iron grills should only be used when needed.

SHAPE OF PLOT

The best shapes are either square or rectangular. If the plot is not a

perfect rectangle, it is best if at least the southwest and southeast sides

of the land are at 90º angles from one another. Land that extends past

the northeast side of the quadrilateral, however, brings wealth,

(14)

happiness, and good name. Land extending on the northeast side is

very good. Extensions on any other side are inauspicious. Extensions of

the northwest side will cause loss money and peace.

Round, oval, and triangular plots should be avoided. The house should

not be built in the shape of a diamond, with the corner facing north.

L-shaped plots are also inauspicious and should not be purchased. It is

good if the plot is narrower at the entrance and wider at its rear, but the

opposite is not good.

Top

WATER SOURCE

It is advised that the first construction project for the new house is to

dig the well. If water is used from this well for the construction, it is

auspicious for the family who will live in the house. It is best that the

well or water source is on the north or northeast side of the land, or if

water comes from the municipality, it should enter from the northeast

side.

The well can also be in the north or east sides of the property. The well

should not be in the northwest or southeast corners, as this is

inauspicious. It is especially inauspicious if the well is dug in the

southwest corner. It is also inauspicious to have a well in the middle of a

house.Wells should be round. Ideally, the well water should be exposed

to sunlight for five hours a day. It is not recommended to share wells

between two properties.

The well should be dug under an auspicious star, such as Rohini, Hasta,

Uttara Bhadrapada, Uttara, etc. It should be dug on an auspicious day—

a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. The well should be dug

during a downward-facing constellation or star, such as, Krittika, Purva

Phalguni, Mula, Bharani, Ashlesha, Purva Bhadrapada, or Purvashadha.

Water departing from the kitchen and bathroom should flow to the

northeast and leave the house from this side.

Top

(15)

The compound wall should be built before the house is constructed.

Construction should begin during an auspicious constellation, and on a

favorable day—a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. The

compound wall should not be higher than the house, and construction

of it should begin on the southwest side.

The southwest part of the wall should be higher than the rest of the wall.

Do not set the gate on the south side. It is best that there are two gates

to the compound, so evil things entering one gate will exit from the

other.

INSIDE THE COMPOUND

It is best if the house is built on the southwest section of the land. Any

open space should be to the north and east. Open space on the west

side of the land is not good for the family’s male members. It is also

good to keep a tulasi plant in the northeast corner. The electric

generators should be situated on the southeast section of the plot, not

the northeast, which is inauspicious.

If there is to be a swimming pool, waterfalls, or fountains, they should be

set to the north, east, or northeast. Gardens, plants, or the lawns should

also be set to the north, east, or northeast. Plants should be less than

1m in height. Swings should be to the north or east, and should swing

from east to west.It is considered inauspicious to block the entrance to a

house, such as with a tree or telephone pole.

Trash or dirty water should not be kept near a house’s entrance An

unclean stream or pool of unclean water should not be located in front

of the house.Annexes or outhouses should not be on the north or east

sides of the house, and they definitely should not touch the eastern or

northern boundary walls.

A garage, building, or servants’ quarters built separately from the house

should be located to the southeast or northwest of the main house but

should not touch any of the boundary walls. Ideally such quarters

should not touch the southeast corner, but should be slightly west .

Top

(16)

It is always good to grow a tulasi plant on one’s property. Tulasi should

be located on the north, northeast, or east sides of the house, or in front

of the house. Trees should not be planted directly in front of the house’s

main entrance. There should be an even number of trees on one’s

property, not an odd number.

Trees should be planted on the south or west sides of the house. It is

not good to plant a tall tree on the north, northeast, or east sides of a

building. Smaller trees may be planted on the east or north sides, but no

trees should be planted in the northeast corner. A tree’s shadow should

not fall on the house.Large trees should not be located too near the

house as their roots can damage the foundation and compound wall. Do

not allow tree branches to touch the house.

Thorny plants should not be planted near the house. Cactus should not

be planted at all. Thorny plants other than roses have a negative energy.

Good trees to plant are coconut, neem, betal, sandalwood, lemon,

pineapple, almond, jackfruit, pomegranate, mango and amla. Banyan

and pipal are sacred trees; they should usually only be planted near a

temple or at a sacred place.Creepers or other plants should not be

grown by using the building or compound wall as support. When cutting

the tree, it should fall east or north, not south or west.

Top

PARKING LOT

Cars should be parked facing east or north. A car should never be

parked facing south. If a car is parked facing west or northwest, the

owner will spend a long time traveling. The parking lot should be in the

northwest corner of the property. It should not be located to the

southwest or northeast.

A parking garage should not be connected to the compound wall or the

main building. The parking garage should be painted a light color, not a

dark color.

BALCONIES / VERANDAHS

Balconies, verandahs, and terraces should ideally be built on the north,

northeast, or east sides of the house, not on the south or west sides. If a

(17)

balcony is on the southwest side of a house, it should be covered and

closed.

The floor or roof over a balcony or terrace should be lower than the floor

or roof of the main building. It is best if the verandah’s roof is slanted

toward the northeast. The verandah’s corners should not be rounded,

and balconies should not have arches.

Flowerpots on the verandah should be small. No creepers should be

planted on a verandah.

Top

MAIN DOOR

The main door of the house should be larger than the other doors

entering the house. The main door should have two shutters and open

to the inside of the building. Teak is a good material for the entrance

door.It is best that a house has two entrances. The exit door should be

smaller than the entrance, and it should have only one shutter. If there

are two external doors for the house, they should not be set in a straight

line.

When one enters the house, there should not be a wall in front of the

entrance. There should be a door that opens to the next room. The main

door of the house should not be below ground- level. Neither should the

main door be in the center of the house, nor in the extreme corners.

To figure out where to place a main door, divide the house into nine
