GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS AND
MANAGEMENT
Location:
The Faculty of Economics is located in the evocative monastery of San Felice, founded during the 8th century AD by the last Longobardian king Desiderio and his wife Ansa. The buildings of the monastery are being gradually restored. At the moment the students of the Faculty can already use a most peculiar reading room that used to be the ancient church of the monastery. Two finely decorated tombs from the Middle Ages were found inside the church in 1996. One of the tombs contained the earthly remains of the Abbess Ariperga. The graduation ceremony of the students of the Faculty is being held in this very same place. The library of the Faculty, with ceilings decorated with bas-reliefs and frescos from the Middle Ages, is also situated in the premises of the monastery.
History:
The Faculty of Economics and Managementis heir of the first schools for commerce of the second half of the 18th century, later transformed in the Faculties of Economics and Commerce. That diction was still used in 1964 when the Faculty was founded in Pavia, and it has been maintained until very recently. In the beginning, the educational goals of the Faculty were limited to the traditional professions, managerial positions in banks and other companies, with an emphasis on commerce and related procedures, and to those roles in the public sector that required particular competence in law and accounting. Later on, the progressive opening to the world-wide markets, the fast-paced development of financial markets and the spreading of new information and communication technologies have multiplied the professional profiles required from students who graduate from the Faculty. In addition to changing its name, the Faculty has faced the need to multiply the number of courses to adapt itself to the new requirements.
Therefore, new three-year undergraduate courses like Marketing ed e-business were added to the more general and traditional ones, namely Economia and Economia aziendale, as an answer to the processes of transformation of the enterprises. However, the general and interdisciplinary nature of the Faculty has not been forgotten. The Faculty still offers a general education that consists of six terms during which students can acquire basic notions in macroeconomics, microeconomics, management, mathematics, statistics, history and law.

THE INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS OF THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS
The international openings and the adhesion to important European university networks constitute points of strength for the didactics on offer and for the faculty’s research.
Our Faculty has been one of the most active in launching student exchange program (Erasmus) before and in the offer of courses of double effective European degree later on.
Today there are active exchanges with approximately forty-seven European university centers. There are also some centers in the United States and, during course of the year, thirty-nine outgoing exchanges were launched, a figure that is destined to grow by year-end with the reopening of the competition, and thirty-six incoming exchanges.
From the start of the first double degree to the present, twenty-nine students from Pavia have participated in the program, of whom seventeen have already achieved the degree.
Recently, the faculty’s strategy of internationalization, in coherence with the current trends and policy indications at a European level, has been oriented towards the strengthening of the university network, where, along with student exchanges under the Socrates program, common double triennial and specialist degree courses, exchanges of teaching staff, doctorate students, researchers, and administrative staff and joint research activities can be planned. The preparation for a Master’s course entitled ‘European Union and international economy’ is underway at the faculty of Economics. The program forms part of the Erasmus Mundus.
In this field, an important European event - the meeting of the EMBS (European Masters of Business Science) network – was held at our faculty in Pavia on 5-6 November 2004. At the meeting, the representatives of fifteen universities from the EMBS network met in order to get to discuss bilateral programs of double diplomas and exchanges of researchers. Also on the table for discussion was the current program that confers a European Masters certificate upon students of specialist degrees.
STUDENT MOBILITY PROGRAMS
Erasmus
Within the European Union Erasmus/Socrates program, the Faculty of Economics currently has active exchanges with forty-seven foreign universities (Belgium: 1. Denmark: 3. Finland: 1. France: 14. Germany: 8. United Kingdom: 2. Greece: 1. Poland: 2. Portugal: 2. Spain: 1l. Romania:1, Oland: 1 ).
As a consequence of university reforms, new criteria have been identified for students’ participation in the mobility programs and for the conferring of scholarships. These criteria were approved by the Faculty’s governing body on 15 December 2003.
In order to stimulate the students’ mobility it has also been established that:
• the period of study abroad under the Erasmus/Socrates program constitutes one of the external training activities, an alternative to an internship (6 CFU);
• participation in an international student mobility program is one of pre-requisites that can be taken into consideration by the Commission of triennial degrees when attributing distinctions (with a minimum mark of at least 103/110).
To conclude, the Faculty of Economics is part of the Commission created at university level for the editorial team that writes the ‘Socrates Regulations of Athenaeum’, regulations which will then have to be implemented by each faculty.
Number of students participating in the program (excluding double diploma students): after the dip recorded in the move to 3 + 2, in the last three academic years the mobility of the students at our faculty (outgoing) has once more begun to increase.
Students enrolled on their specialist degree, who spend the second year abroad, can also participate in the program when preparing the thesis.
The faculty receives a high number of foreign students (incoming), above all from Germany and Spain. The support services for these students have been much improved and each September an Incoming Day is organized, in order to allow them to familiarize themselves with our facilities.

EMBS (European Master of Business Sciences)
Since 2002, the Faculty of Economics has participated in the Consortium EMBS (cfr. infra) as part of which exchange programs have been set up. These stays last an academic year (during a
specialist degree) at one of the 21 European partner institutions.
Students who participates in this program (that we could define as a sort of "élite of Erasmus") acquires a second level degree (in Italy the specialist degree) and the title of “European Master in business science” conferred by the Consortium. Three students have just left to take part in this program, two students for Swansea and one student for Krakow.
The students registered for the first year of a graduate degree (Laurea Specialistica) in Laurea in
Economia e gestione delle imprese can participate in the EMBS (European Master of Business
Sciences) program in one of the partner institutions: Syddansk Universitet (Denmark), Groupe Supérieure de Commerce Montpellier (France), Groupe ESC Brest (France), Groupe ESC Clermont (France), Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 (France), Ecole de Management de Normandie (France) University of Wales Swansea (Great Britain), Universidad de Alcalà de Henares (Spain); Universidad de Còrdoba (Spain), Universidad de Granada (Spain), Krakow University (Poland), Universität di Mannheim (Germany), Otto-Fridrich Universität (Germany).
Study plan
The studies are composed of two years. During the first year the students are in Pavia where they have to take 60 credits divided in three different modules. The second year will be spent abroad, during which the students have to take 60 ECTS worth of exams divided in three modules of 20 credits each. The module for European Affairs is obligatory.
Each partner university has the module for European Affairs and at least five modules from the following list: Accountancy, Business Informatics, Economics, Finance, General and Strategic
Management, Marketing, Quantitative Methods, Human Resource Management, Production, and
eventually an optional module.
The thesis written at the end of the program should preferably be on a theme related to Europe.
Degree
The students who participate in this program will obtain a graduate degree (laurea di secondo livello) and also a degree in European Master in Business Science.
The degree will be awarded during the annual meeting of the EMBS in November in one of the partner institutions.
Application
The students who are registered for the first year of graduate studies (Laurea Specialistica, percorsi aziendali) can apply to the program.
The application deadline coincides with the Socrates Program deadline. It is usually around February-March. The participants will be selected at the end of April.
Admission criteria
The academic excellency, the motivation and the language skills of the candidate are the primary criteria for admission. There will be a language test to verify the language skills.
Scholarship
Exchanges with the United States
An average of 4-6 students from the Faculty of Economics participate every year in various exchanges with universities in the United States and set up by the University of Pavia. The stays last 4-6 months and examinations taken abroad are recognized once the student returns to Italy.
UNIVERSITY NETWORKS
The Faculty of Economics is part of two international university networks:
• the network HERMES (Higher Education and Research in Management 0f European Universities), that groups various European Universities (IECS-Strasbourg, Technische Universitat Dresden, Friedrich-Alexander-Universitat Erlangen-Nuremberg, Stuttgart of Management and Institut Technology, Eberahard Karls Universitat Tubingen, Uniwersitet Jagiellonski Krakow, Heriot Watt University Edimburgh...), in order to favour the activity of scientific and didactic collaboration at a European level, based on double diploma programs;
• European Consortium EMBS (European Master of Business Science), within which programs of exchange are set up at specialist degree level. This leads to the attainment of the "European Master of Business Science". The following universities are members: University of Birmingham, Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, University of Reading, University of Wales (UK); ESC Brest, ESC Clermont Ferrand, ESC du Havre, Université Jean Moulin Lyon III, Group Sup de Co Montpellier, (France); Universidad de Cordoba, Universidad de Granada (Spain); Kracow University of Economics (Poland); Universitat Mannheim, Universitat Regensburg, Universitat Stuttgart (Germany); University of Southern Denmark, Odense (Denmark) and Universitat Wien (Austria).
Pavia’s Faculty of Economics hosted the Annual Meeting of the EMBS network on 4,5 and 6 November 2004.
The strategy of the Faculty within these network is aimed at boosting bilateral relations with other universities. This will allow the addition of teacher exchanges and cooperation in the field of research to the simple exchange of students.
TEACHING MOBILITY
Within the various programs set up, didactic and research contacts between our teaching staff and foreign universities have been consistently increasing.
Within the Socrates/Erasmus Program, the Faculty of Economics participates in a teaching mobility program with Poland (Prof Giancarlo Malvestito).
Within the Hermes network, an exchange with visiting professors from the IECS of Strasbourg (Prof Antonella Zucchella) has been established.
As part of the EMBS Consortium, in April 2004 Dr. Paul Scabini participated in "Teaching International Week" at the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce of Clermont Ferrand (France).
OTHER EUROPEAN PROGRAMS
• Erasmus Mundus
Aimed at improving the quality of advanced education and at greater intercultural understanding by means of the cooperation with third party countries, Erasmus Mundus (www.erasmusmundus.it) is a program of collaboration and mobility that aims to promote globally the image of the European Union as center of excellence for learning.
