Reflections

“In the beginning,” the first words of the Book of Genesis, we discover by verse 26 of the first chapter that God our Creator made us to be family, family to one another and family to God, in whose image and likeness we are made. God saw the goodness of all his creation and gave us a share in his work of creation: “Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it” (GEN 1:28). We have all been given a great gift, the opportunity to live in peace and harmony with our loving God forever. The responsibility is ours to understand and appreciate this gift, to be children of God, brothers and sisters in Christ, all for the glory of God.

Soon after starting this family, we all began to understand that it is a gift not to be taken for granted. By chapters three and four of Genesis we discovered our ability to deny God his right to our obedience, to point fingers at one another, and even our capacity to destroy each other’s life. God our Father did not respond in kind, rather he shows us how to live as family, especially in the example of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Today’s gospel reveals that they were not exempt from the daily concerns and anxiety this world forces upon us, but that they fulfilled their role in the family by staying focused on the Father’s work. Even at the age of 12 Jesus revealed that the Father’s plan for our salvation is at work, that after three days of darkness, Jesus would rise and all would be restored to perfect obedience to the Father, complete harmony with the design of our Creator forever. “After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers…‘Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?’” (LK 2:46-49).

The New Year will no doubt bring us new and greater challenges, and our Holy Father Pope Francis reminds us in his 2016 World Day of Peace message entitled “Overcome Indifference and Win Peace,” that while we continue to experience great concerns, anxieties and darkness, our Lord is in his Father’s house, preparing a place for us, and God is present:

“God is not indifferent! God cares about mankind! God does not abandon us! At the beginning of the New Year, I would like to share not only this profound conviction but also my cordial good wishes for prosperity, peace and the fulfilment of the hopes of every man and every woman, every family, people and nation throughout the world, including all Heads of State and Government and all religious leaders. We continue to trust that 2016 will see us all firmly and confidently engaged, on different levels, in the pursuit of justice and peace. Peace is both God’s gift and a human achievement. As a gift of God, it is entrusted to all men and women, who are called to attain it.” Pope Francis points out that this Jubilee Year of Mercy will help us to fulfill our role in God’s family. “Mercy is the heart of God. It must also be the heart of the members of the one great family of his children: a heart which beats all the more strongly wherever human dignity – as a reflection of the face of God in his creatures – is in play. Jesus tells us that love for others – foreigners, the sick, prisoners, the homeless, even our enemies – is the yardstick by which God will judge our actions. Our eternal destiny depends on this.” Pope Francis also knows who we all need to turn to for help in our daily tasks. “I entrust these reflections, together with my best wishes for the New Year, to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother, who cares for the needs of our human family, that she may obtain from her Son Jesus, the Prince of Peace, the granting of our prayers and the blessing of our daily efforts for a fraternal and united world”.

Happy New Year! Fr. John
