Vacancy announcement for the position of

Assistant Manager, Claims for Mauritius Regional Office

The African Reinsurance Corporation (Africa Re) is a pan-African

financial institution with diplomatic status in its current 41

African member countries. Headquartered in Lagos (Nigeria), Africa

Re is the leading reinsurance company in Africa and the Middle East,

with continental network of regional and local offices in Lagos

(Nigeria), Casablanca (Morocco), Nairobi (Kenya), Abidjan (Côte

d’Ivoire), Ébène (Mauritius), Cairo (Egypt) and Addis Ababa

(Ethiopia) as well as two subsidiaries: Africa Re (South Africa) Ltd

in Johannesburg and Africa Retakaful Ltd in Cairo (Egypt). The

Corporation shareholding is split between African (75%) and

Non-African (25%) investors. Non-African shareholding comprises 41 Non-African

states, the AfDB and more than 100 African insurance/reinsurance

companies from the 41 member countries.

Africa Re announces the vacancy of the position of an Assistant

Manager, Claims (Grade PS1) in his African Indian Island & South

East Asia Region in Ébène (Mauritius).

I.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting directly to the Supervisor of the Mauritius Regional

office, the successful candidate will provide superior service in a

cost-effective manner by executing best claims practices in an

effort to minimize and/or eliminate risk factors and unwarranted

losses in order to achieve profitability, liquidity and customer

satisfaction/retention on a sustainable basis.

II. DUTIES/JOB DETAILS

The duties of the Assistant Manager, Claims shall comprise amongst

others:

Manage the claims personnel reporting to you and ensure that the

team delivers as per the Service Level Standards of Africa Re

and in alignment with the Claims and Underwriting Guidelines of

Africa Re

Ensure that all claims are appropriately and timeously received,

registered, analyzed and processed appropriately on the claims

systems of Africa Re, if they are valid;

Manage performance of the claims team and ensure that all queries

and complaints are appropriately handled;

Provide appropriate claims management report in accordance with

the standards of the corporation;

Ensure that there is follow up by the claims team in all cases

where additional information and supporting documents may be

required for processing of claims;

Ensures complete and sound claims settlements, legal reviews,

technical inspections and investigations when necessary;

Examine claims investigated by loss adjusters and carry out

further investigation for questionable claims to determine

whether to authorize payments;

Confer with Legal Counsel on claims requiring litigation;

Make recommendations on claims processes and resolution

strategies to the Management of the Corporation;

Monitor and analyze claims trends; prepare and present reports

on claims development to the Management and any other key

stakeholders;

Report overpayments, underpayment and other irregularities;

Resolve claims fairly and equitably, acting on the best interest

of the Corporation and the cedants and providing reparation as

prescribed in the cover note;

Establish and adjust reserves in a timely manner to ensure

reserving activities are consistent with the Corporation

guidelines and policies;

Process and monitor the development of the outstanding claims

provision;

Manage the follow up and reconciliation of cash call credit

refunds;

Maintain proper records of all claims notification and follow up

to logical conclusion;

Ensure claims files are properly documented and claims coding is

correct and ensure that all electronic archiving is done in

accordance with group standards;

Keep an audit trail of all reported claims;

Prompt processing of reported reinsurance or retrocession claims

recoveries;

Assist the cedants or retrocedants to manage subrogation and

recoveries and follow up for retrocession and salvage;

Provide claims input to assist the Underwriting Team when

analysing risk during renewal and or acceptance of new

businesses;

Provide input from claims aimed at improving pricing and

analytical

tools,

reinsurance

systems

and

underwriting

guidelines of the corporation;

Provide guidance and assistance to the corporation and cedants

through risk surveys and investigation;

Assist the corporation in the training and development of

underwriting and claims skills of the team

Any other duties as may be required by the Management of the

Corporation.

III.

MAIN COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION

In-depth knowledge of appropriate insurance and reinsurance

principles, practices and laws as applicable to different

lines of business;

Sound comprehension of different forms of reinsurance of

facultative and treaty business

Advanced

insurance/reinsurance and claims principles, practices and

procedures;

Good analytical skills in interpreting clauses in insurance,

reinsurance and retrocession contracts;

Advanced functional knowledge and skills of claims handling;

Excellent underwriting skills and good experience in risk

surveys;

Demonstrated proficiency in evaluating the relative costs and

benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate

one;

Ability to quickly build good and sustainable relationships

and effectively interact with internal and external business

partners;

Excellent

Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, with the

ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects;

to different markets as may be required by the corporation

Excellent skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and

Outlook) is required Knowledge of other business-related

software will be an added advantage.

IV.

QUALIFICATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Applicants shall be holders of

First University degree plus Masters in relevant fields plus

3 years post qualification relevant qualitative work-related

experience with emphasis in a relevant discipline preferably

in Insurance/Reinsurance or Insurance Law.

Or

First University degree in relevant fields plus full

professional qualification, plus 3 years post qualification

relevant qualitative work-related experience with emphasis in

a relevant discipline preferably in Insurance/Reinsurance or

Insurance Law

Or

First University degree in relevant field plus 7 years post

qualification relevant qualitative work-related experience

with emphasis in a relevant discipline preferably in

Insurance/Reinsurance or Insurance Law

Relevant work experience in a Claims Department of a

Reinsurance Company or Reinsurance and/or Claims Department of

an Insurance Company is a must. The ideal candidate should

have 5-10 years’ of Claims Management experience. Property and

Casualty claims experience preferred. Experience in claims

management in other lines of business is an added advantage.

Applicants must also be:

Fluent in English language

Working knowledge of French or Portuguese will be an added

advantage.

Below 40 years of age.

V.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The successful candidate shall have the following benefits:

Competitive Basic Salary on the Corporation’s Grade Level PS1

Variable pay (Annual Performance Bonus)

Joint contribution to the Provident Fund (7% of the basic

salary paid by staff and 14% by the employer)

Children education subsidy for each child up to 26 years

(maximum 4 children)

Medical cover for staff and family;

Housing Allowance

Exemption from taxes and duties (diplomatic status of an

international civil servant) – if non-National;

Home leave to country of origin every one year paid by the

employer (if non-National) ;

Duty Post Differential (Cost of Living Allowance), that may

increase or decrease depending on the economic situation,

paid in local currency.

VI.

JOB LOCATION

The successful candidate shall be based in Ébène (Mauritius) with

the possibility of redeployment to another Production Centre within

the Africa Re Group.
