Why choose Electronic and
Computer Engineering?
Electronic equipment and products have become a vital part
of our daily lives, from mobile phones and computers to highly
sophisticated diagnostic equipment used in hospitals and
state-of-the-art fibre optic communications systems.
Computers, telecommunication systems and consumer electronics
are advancing at a fast pace. Electronic and microelectronic
embedded systems are at the core of these developments, and
there is a rapidly growing demand for well-qualified scientists
and engineers across the full breadth of electronic and computer
engineering.
Why choose Electronic and
Computer Engineering at
Brunel at Brunel?
ECE at Brunel is one of the largest disciplines in the university
with over 40 full-time academic staff and extensive teaching
and research portfolios. Despite its size, our department
maintains a friendly community atmosphere between students
and staff.
Our recent National Student Survey (NSS) results consistently
reflect the positive learning experience of our students and the
high level of satisfaction with our academic provision.
Developed in response to the needs of industry, our degree
courses will give you advanced level knowledge and skills in the
design of complex electronic, microelectronic and computer
systems.
Our teaching is research-led and we have strong links with the
world of industry which benefit our students when it comes
to placements and helpful contacts. The department has five
research centres focusing on telecommunications, sensors
and instrumentation, sustainable energy and systems, our
research findings and expertise feeding directly back into
the modules we teach. Brunel’s geographical proximity to the
highest concentration of the UK’s information engineering
and telecommunications industry – in London and along the
M4 corridor – means our network of potential work placement
contacts is second to none.
Devansh Arora,
(Computer Systems Engineering BEng)
“Computer Systems Engineering at Brunel University is designed to equip you with a vast variety of knowledge that is highly desired within the industry. The comprehensive structure of this course enables the fundamental values of computing and engineering to be instilled through modules such as Digital Systems, Systems & Programming, and Computer Engineering Mathematics. The course then builds on top of these fundamentals with Networks, Security, Architecture & Interfacing, and Web Scripting. The facilities within the labs
and lectures are of exceptional quality, enabling students to work efficiently and learn on the most modern, industry standard tools available.
The Placement and Careers Centre (PCC) provides a range of services such as CV writing and interview practice along with continual support in order to improve the chances of securing a placement and/or graduate job. The PCC assisted me in securing
my placement at Ernst & Young LLP as a Forensic Analyst within their Forensic Technology and Discovery Services (FTDS) sector. The experience I’m gaining is absolutely invaluable. I have been placed on a project that has required me to work in Dubai and Bahrain for a month (all expenses paid) instead of my usual office at London Bridge. On the social side, Brunel has plenty to offer. There are two bars and a nightclub situated on campus, and a selection of pubs in the local town high street ten minutes’ walk away from Brunel. With one of the best Student Unions in the country, both the nightlife and events arranged throughout the year are exceptional and a fantastic way to socialise with other students. Sporting facilities at Brunel are of Olympic standard, with Usain Bolt being a regular attendee”

How we teach
You will be taught in a mixture of lectures, laboratory
sessions, workshops and small group tutorials. You will also
have one-to-one supervision for all your project work at each
level. We operate an open door policy so you can drop in and
chat or email lecturers with your questions.
If you go on a placement you will be allocated a placement tutor
who will help you set objectives, monitor your progress, and provide
further support if you need it. You will also have a personal tutor
who is available to discuss.
Career opportunities
Our ECE undergraduate degree programmes aim to develop
you into a highly qualified engineer. Combining individual
versatility with highly developed teamwork skills, you will be
equipped with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of
your subject, its underlying principles and the ability to apply
them to complex problems.
Our courses also give you the design, analytical and transferable
creative and leadership skills to exploit and play a leading role in the
dynamic and rapidly expanding technological industries.
At Brunel we have a strong tradition of placements forming an
integral part of our undergraduate courses. ECE students have been
placed at a number of high profile companies including Intel, General
Motors, BMW, Motorola, ARM, RIM, 3M, Siemens, National Grid, IBM
and Microsoft, among others. A work placement allows you to bring
your studies to life, giving you excellent professional experience and
contacts.
Recent graduates have gone on to work for prestigious companies
including the BBC, Intel, Philips, Siemens, 3M and a variety of
engineering companies.

Gemma Townsend, (Electronic and Electrical Engineering BEng)
“Brunel offered a foundation course in Engineering and I thought that this would be a good route to take as it would enable me to develop the basic skills and knowledge needed to successfully complete an engineering degree. I chose Brunel over other universities because of its excellent reputation in this field, and I liked the fact that it was a campus university which gives a more homely atmosphere, and also being on the outskirts of London it was an easy commute to get home.
I lived in halls during my first and final years of university and found this very useful as it enabled me to get fully involved in University life from joining societies to being a part of sports team. It also provided easy access to facilities which came in handy for meeting deadlines and revising for exams. As I had completed a foundation course in engineering the transition onto the BEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering degree was very smooth, as I had a feel for the University and had made some friends and built meaningful relationships. Having dyslexia the support provided by the Disability and Dyslexia Service was invaluable and my Study Skills advisor has helped me to grow and develop, and I wish I could take her with me when I leave Brunel.
During the second year I
decided to apply for a variety of internship roles. I found that the application process for various companies differed, ranging from submitting a CV with a covering letter to completing lengthy competency-based application forms. I found the Placement and Careers Centre at Brunel very useful and the staff both friendly and approachable.”
Electronic and Computer Engineering
