ESOL Language Arts Program Syllabus

Course Title: ESOL/Language Arts - Fundamentals

Grade: 6-8

ELP Level 1 Entering/ELP Level 2 Beginning

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE: This course includes intensive English instruction to develop English

language proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking. The students will acquire English

language proficiency in Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic

Language Proficiency Skills (CALPS). In addition, the course of study will address American classroom

and cultural norms as well as multicultural awareness and appreciation.

Skills Addressed Throughout Each of the Units: Reading: Read, Respond, and Build Skills, Build

Background, Vocabulary, Comprehension, Build Fluency, Literary Analysis; Language: High Frequency

Words, Phonics and Decoding, Reading and Spelling, Language Functions, Grammar Functions, Listening,
