Collection-related museum projects:

Taxonomy of Podarcis lizards, with Dr. P. Sa-Sousa (Evora, Portugal), manuscript submitted. This work involved a ca. three-week laboratorium exercise at the Zoological Museum Amsterdam. Phylogeny and phylogeography of Triturus vulgaris / montandoni, with Dr. W. Babik (Cracov, Poland), manuscript submitted.

Phylogeography of Triturus alpestris, with Dr. M. Garcia-Paris (Madrid, Spain), manuscript in preparation.

Phylogeny of the family Salamandridae, with Dr. G. Caccone (Yale, USA), manuscript in preparation. Substantial progress was made to the revision of a draft type-catalogue that is by now ca. 40% ready. Work was carried out by Gassó-Miracle, assisted by Michels and Arntzen. The amphibia type catalogue is expected to be ready for web-publication towards the end of 2005.

Collaborative projects:

The status of the crested newt (Triturus cristatus superspecies) breeding sites in Serbia, the Central Balkans, with Dr. J. Crnobrnja-Isailovic (Belgrade, FR Yugoslavia) and J.W. Arntzen. Report

produced for the Declining Amphibian Population TaskForce, Milton Keynes, UK, a shortened version is submitted for publication in FrogLog.

Atlas of the Amphibians and Reptiles of Peneda-Gerês National Park, Portugal, by Soares, C., F. Álvares, A. Loureiro, N. Sillero, J.W. Arntzen & J.C. Brito. Manuscript submitted to Herpetozoa.

Chapters were produced by Arntzen on two species of Iberian amphibians (the salamander Chioglossa lusitanica and the toad Alytes dickhilleni) for the project on ' Important Herpetological Areas in Europe', coordinated by Dr. A.H.P. Stumpel at Alterra - Green World Research,

Collaboration with Dr. O. Nuneza, Iligan State University, Iligan, Philippines. Fieldwork was carried out by Arntzen in the Philippines from October 24 - November 11 in the framework of the 'Mindanao Mount Malindang Biodiversity Project'. Arntzen was accompanied by Mr. M. Sztatecsny from the University of Vienna, Austria. The work resulted in the 'Report on a fieldwork trip annex evaluation report on the Biodiversity Research Project Mt. Malindang, Mindanao, Philippines'.

Two applications were submitted with SyntheSys by foreign colleagues for research in the

collections, one of which was awarded. The visit by Mr. E. Recuero from Madrid is scheduled to take place in early spring 2005.

Arntzen was co-applicant in the grant proposal 'The role of connectivity in designing Marine Protected Area networks: a multi-taxon approach' that was submitted with NWO section 'Aard- en Levenswetenschappen' in the programma 'Duurzaam gebruik en behoud van mariene levende hulpbronnen' by Dr. B.
