FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

“Praise the L

ORD

!

I will give thanks to the L

ORD

with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation.

Great are the works of the L

ORD

, studied by all who delight in them…

The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy.

They are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness...

The fear of the L

ORD

is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding.

His praise endures forever.”

Psalm 111:1-2, 7-8, 10

January 31, 2021 _______ _______________10:00 AM GATHERING

CENTERING MUSIC “Fantasy in A minor” Reger/Bach *CALL TO WORSHIP

Praise God, who loves us all.

Praise God, who is full of mercy and compassion. Praise God, who loves us well.

Praise God, who creates honesty and justice. Praise God, who invites us to love.

Praise God, who loves through us and our actions.

*PRAISE HYMN (UMH 264, vs. 1, 3) “Silence, Frenzied, Unclean Spirit”

alt. tune HYMN TO JOY (UMH89)

1. “Silence, frenzied, unclean spirit!” cried God’s healing Holy One. “Cease your ranting! Flesh can’t bear it. Flee as night before the sun.” At Christ’s words the demon trembled, from its victim madly rushed, While the crowd that was assembled stood in wonder, stunned and hushed.

3. Silence, Lord the unclean spirit in our mind and in our heart;

Speak your word that when we hear it, all our demons shall depart. Clear our thought and clam our feeling; still the fractured, warring soul.

By the power of you healing make us faithful, true and whole. *PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

Holy Spirit, your people call out for understanding.

Bring to our yearning hearts and minds the truth of your Word; in Jesus’ name. Amen.

*GOSPEL LESSON Mark 1:21-28

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. CHILDREN’S CHAPEL

MINISTRY OF MUSIC “Draw Me Close to You” Kelly Carpenter Yolanda Hernandez, soloist

Draw me close to You; never let me go.

I lay it all down again to hear You say that I’m Your friend. You are my desire; no one else will do.

Cause nothing could take Your place, to feel the warmth of Your embrace. Help me find the way; bring me back to You.

You’re all I want, You’re all I’ve ever needed. You’re all I want. Help me know You are near.

MESSAGE “What Have You to Do with Us” Rev. Mary Browne RESPONSE TO THE WORD (UMH 507) “Through It All” THROUGH IT ALL

(Sung Twice)

Through it all, through it all,

I’ve learned to trust in Jesus, I’ve learned to trust in God; Through it all, through it all,

I’ve learned to depend upon God’s Word. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth

as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever. Amen.

STEWARDSHIP MOMENT AND INVITATION TO THE OFFERING

OFFERTORY HYMN (TFWS 2036) “Give Thanks” GIVE THANKS

Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks to the Holy One;

give thanks because he’s given Jesus Christ, his Son. (Repeat) And now let the weak say, “We are strong!”;

let the poor say, “We are rich because of what the Lord has done for us!” (Repeat)

Give thanks!

*PRESENTATION OF GIFTS (UMH 87, v.1) “What Gift Can We Bring”

ANNIVERSARY SONG

What gift can we bring, what present, what token? What words can convey it-- the joy of this day? When grateful we come, remembering, rejoicing,

(4)

*OFFERING PRAYER

God of power and wisdom, we give you our eternal thanks for the gift of your Son,

who came not only to save but to teach us about your kingdom and how we might live, readying ourselves for that kingdom.

He taught with authority, and if we listen, we will live a life of generosity, mercy, and compassion.

Bless what we give this day and help us be faithful in the use

of all our resources, that we might live like those anticipating your kingdom. In Christ, we pray. Amen.

*CLOSING HYMN (UMH 265, v. 1, 3, 5) O Christ, the Healer”

alt. tune TALLIS’ CANON (UMH 682)

1. O Christ, the healer, we have come to pray for health, to plead for friends.

How can we fail to be restored, when reached by love that never ends?

3. How strong, O Lord, are our desires, how weak our knowledge of ourselves!

Release in us those healing truths unconscious pride resists or shelves. 5. Grant that we all, made one in faith,

in your community may find the wholeness that, enriching us, shall reach the whole of humankind. *DISMISSAL WITH BLESSING

Jesus comes to us, offering healing and hope, speaking and acting with authority. Listen to him. Go into this world, confident in God’s love and healing power.

Go in peace and may God’s love and peace always be with you. Go forth…

…replenished by the grace and mercy of God, …blessed by the healing love of Jesus,

…energized by the limitless power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Please be seated

Lenten Bible Study

Our Lenten Bible Study this year will be the newest book by best-selling author and United Methodist Pastor Adam Hamilton. Words of Life is a study of the Ten Commandments, combining Scripture and inspiration to explore the biblical context and contemporary context and to encourage reflection on how these historic

theological and ethical statements can give guidance in our daily faith journey.

We will have 2 meeting times for the Lenten Bible Study, a daytime group that will meet on Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. (the first meeting will be on

Monday to accommodate Pastor Mary’s schedule), and an evening group will meet on Wednesdays, 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Both meeting times will be offered in-person and via ZOOM. The dates for the daytime group on Tuesdays will be February 22 (Monday), March 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30. The dates for the evening group on Wednesdays will be February 24, March 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31.

There are clipboards on the table in the narthex of the church on which you can sign up to be part of the study or you may contact the church office via e-mail or telephone. We are asking for a donation of $15.00 for the hardcover book, but this should not be a barrier to anyone being able to participate in the Lenten Study. Please contact Pastor Mary if you have any questions.

Your giving envelopes for 2021 are available for pick

up in Room 211.

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE

FEBRUARY 17 7:00 p.m.

In-person & Livestream

Please plan to attend the Ash Wednesday service as we begin observing the season of Lent. Our journey through Lent begins with a recognition of our mortality and the need

for repentance. We apply ashes to our forehead as a recognition of our need for repentance and our dependence on the mercy of God in forgiveness.

If you attend the service in person, we will have a caring safety protocol for applying ashes. If you plan to attend the service via the livestream, please notify the church office so we can provide you with a representation of an ash cross. If you have any

questions, please contact Pastor Mary Browne.

Souper Bowl of Caring is transforming the

Big Game into a nation-wide movement

inspiring people to give locally and make a

collective impact on hunger. Mobilizing

grassroots resources including churches,

schools, civic groups and caring individuals,

the Souper Bowl of Caring movement has

created over $160 million worth of support

that stays completely local.

In 2020, more than 5,000

groups collected over $10.6 million in dollars and food donations for

hunger-relief charities across the country. Over $163 million has been

collected since Souper Bowl of Caring began in 1990.

We will be collecting cans/boxes of soup until

Sunday, February 7
