At Lenovo, we understand that education in the 21st century is a changing landscape in which teachers are

embracing the latest technology, as long as they can see it will make a clear contribution to improving their students’ learning outcomes. Computers in the classroom aren’t just for fun and games. They’re adding new dimensions to the learning experience, providing ways of sharing information, interacting and re-imagining concepts and ideas that simply wouldn’t be possible using traditional methods.

Lenovo has established itself as the world’s leading supplier of computers to education by studying the latest trends, such as immersive 1:1 learning and mobile learning and making machines that allow teachers to make the most of them.

Lenovo also understands the realities of shrinking budgets and makes machines that use as little energy as possible. And if you’re concerned about students breaking the computers, you don’t need to be. Lenovo’s machines meet the highest standards for durability.

Lenovo works with educational institutions around the world, collaborating with the people who have the best understanding of learning requirements—the teachers. Thanks to this dialogue, Lenovo can stay at the forefront of providing technology that helps students exceed expectations and fulfil their potential.

In the previous volume, we told you about three of our products which provide significant benefits for schools—the ThinkCentre® M72z All-In-One desktop, the ThinkCentre M92p Tiny and the ThinkPad® X131e. In

this volume, we’re pleased to unveil our new tablets for education which will further enhance the learning experience—the ThinkPad Tablet 2 and the ThinkPad Twist. Both run on Microsoft®’s latest operating system,

Windows 8 and have been developed with particular education trends in mind—the move towards digitisation of the curriculum and the growing popularity and success of mobile education.

DIGItIsatION Of

thE CurrICuLuM.

One of the most important changes in the way students receive information is through digitisation. Content that previously would only have been presented in books or on a blackboard is now

available on computer screens and mobile devices that students can carry with them.

Digitisation spreads far beyond education. Institutions everywhere, from museums and art galleries to libraries and government agencies, are finding they can transform the accessibility of their data by going digital. Around the world, universities have discovered that by exploiting digital technologies, they can quickly evolve from provincial or national institutions into truly international ones. At the same time, freed from the need to print vast numbers of costly brochures, booklets and worksheets, they’re seeing their costs shrink.

How does this help your students? Digitisation frees students from carrying around textbooks. In some countries schools are already making Tablets mandatory, fitting all their textbooks into a single device assigned to a student for an entire year. And these devices act as keys to the vast amount of material available online, adding to the options that a learner has.

The effective use of digital content in education.

Chapter One

The use of Tablets in education is a big reason for the tremendous

excitement amongst students. The number of students using e-textbooks has seen a significant growth in the last year alone. Students perceive Tablets as tools required for learning, 86% believe that Tablets encourage them to buy and read digital textbooks.*

The Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 is the ideal device for integrating digitisation and mobile learning into your curriculum. It’s sturdy, connected, powerful and affordable. It not only enables content consumption, it also enables content creation. A collaboration between Lenovo and leaders in the software industry, it is a chance at excellence for your students.

According to a recent research conducted by Pearson Foundation, the use of mobile devices by children of the age 8–13 years is at its highest.* Digitisation can be used

to provide a more consistent learning experience. Even while off-campus or on holiday, students can have access to required materials as well as engage in fun activities that enhance their learning.

It’s widely accepted that interactive learning makes for better learners. A device like the Tablet 2 makes better education accessible to the youngest of students.

Digitisation and mobile learning make education more organised. Students have access to all their educational material through connected learning platforms and online portfolios. Now students don’t have to carry different textbooks to

different locations. Instead, they can use a Tablet to learn their lessons and finish tasks. Homework can be personalised per student and delivered electronically; it can be shared between students, teachers and parents more easily.

ONE-ON-ONE GOEs WIrELEss

Mobile learning takes 1:1 learning a step further. Through connected devices, teachers are able to set and deliver different tasks for different students more easily. Delivering homework and materials electronically is much more efficient and reliable than hand-outs and worksheets which can be easily damaged or lost. Digitisation also makes it easier to personalise homework material and action plans, which cuts down on the costs associated with printing and photocopying. Since e-textbooks and mobile devices prove to be beneficial to schools across levels—from student performance to savings—it’s no surprise that their use in primary and secondary learning is on the increase. Plus, students who use Tablets find learning more exciting and engaging. The use of a mobile device also helps build confidence and improve performance of students in hard-to-reach groups.

CONNECtED COMMuNItIEs

With technology such as Cloud Computing and Near Field Communication, students can share and collaborate with each other much easier. The use of mobile devices can enhance group learning experience, even when students are in different

locations. Connecting with others across the world is thrilling for students, no doubt. Through assessments and feedbacks, chats and reminders teachers are able to stay in touch with students constantly.

Most importantly, mobile devices compliment face-to-face interaction and help maintain a lively learning community, giving teachers and students more time for exploration and discussion.

With a big 10.1" touchscreen the ThinkPad Tablet 2 is so simple and intuitive to use that most school children, even at primary level, take to it immediately. Even though they’re doing serious work, there’s a fun factor involved that keeps learners actively engaged for longer. And this is one Tablet that can take the knocks that it’s inevitably going to get from active young people. It’s the perfect companion for a field trip too, being less than 10mm thick and weighing just 610g. And its battery life of over ten hours means it won’t shutdown part way through an assignment.

prECIsION Is kEy

Just because the ThinkPad Tablet 2 doesn’t have a keyboard doesn’t mean it’s no good for taking notes: it comes with a digitiser pen that allows precise and fast input. But if the lesson calls for lengthy periods of typing at a desk, there’s clearly no substitute for a keyboard. But you won’t need to switch to a different machine—just attach the optional keyboard and the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 is ready to go.

But that’s not all. We understand that young minds need to be protected. So if you’re worried about children gaining access to the wrong kind of content, you don’t need to be. The Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 allows you to create a restricted child account.

truLy futurIstIC thINkING

The ThinkPad Tablet 2 has the new, lightning fast Windows 8 operating system on board. All the most familiar and useful mobile apps are pre-loaded and there’s easy access to many more from the Windows® app store. Windows 8 also provides simple

access to the Cloud, which allows students to share notes with each other. More sharing means more collaboration, which leads to greater engagement and understanding. And the built-in WiFi means sharing work between devices is just as simple.

The ThinkPad Tablet 2 also benefits from Near Field Communication (NFC), a handy way of exchanging information with a device that’s a few centimetres away. And that device doesn’t have to be another Tablet, it can be a PC or even a Tv. ‘Bumping’ machines to share files in this way also has a fun, social aspect for students.

Tablets free students from the burden of carrying textbooks around, give students information digitally and also helps them manage information and assignments better. They allow for independent and self-driven learning while enabling teachers to stay connected.

It adds to the excitement of game-based learning, enhances the experience of collaborating with friends in real-time whilst in different places, and offers creative ways to approach an assignment. It’s built sturdy and for staying connected. And in the rare case of damage, Lenovo provides a range of options, both built-in and available with purchase, to ensure education without interruption.

Tablets are extremely popular amongst students today. Teachers believe they increase learning skills and students find them much more engaging than traditional modes of learning. A recent study by Lenovo and Intel® indicates that a group of 4th graders using

hand-held tablets along with conventional studying methods improved their learning skills considerably over a period of 6 months.*

Chapter tWO

blended learning, also known as ‘hybrid’ or ‘integrated’ learning brings together mobile devices, online learning and classroom interaction to make education more flexible and individualised.

Blended learning is an innovative new approach that uses both face-to-face interaction and computer-mediated resources, and it’s what many schools are now putting into action. There is no prescribed form of blended learning. As learning management systems, online assessments, e-textbooks and educational resources online proliferate; schools all over the world are beginning to design their own form of blended learning to meet their students' needs, both within the curriculum and beyond.

Luckily, students of today find navigating technology a breeze. And many already have experience in e-learning before they even start school. Blended learning allows students to access educational resources at their convenience. Even off-site, teachers can still keep track of their progress using an e-learning platform. Face-to-face interaction remains an integral part; only now it might be based on the individual needs of the student.

Because such hybrid learning includes interactive, multimedia and group-learning activities, it has proved to be much more engaging than traditional methods. It also allows students to self-pace, so while the more able students move ahead quickly, others get the individualised attention they deserve.

With squeezed budgets and a shortage of teachers, schools must look for cost-cutting strategies and creative staffing alternatives. Incorporating blended learning allows schools to use their resources wisely while actually enhancing the educational experience.

The ThinkPad Twist has the modes to match the many ways in which blended learning can be adapted to suit your school. Like blended learning itself, the Twist is cost-efficient, flexible and innovative; perfect for traditional classrooms and beyond.

Blended learning can take many modes. A student’s day might involve off-campus study, online classes and a group interaction with the teacher. From largely ‘face-to-face’ learning using online multimedia tools to a model in which a virtual teacher guides the student’s progress daily—it’s an evolving and innovative methodology.

Innosight institute has suggested four modes of blended learning*:

Rotation: Students rotate between self-paced, online learning and the classroom.

Flex: Learning through an online platform with on-site teacher support as needed.

Self-Blend: Students take online courses to supplement traditional course work.

Enriched-virtual: Both face-to-face interaction and an online component for every course.

tEaCh thE NEW Way

Teachers drive the transformation blended learning enables. Such a methodology doesn’t take teachers out of the classroom. Instead, it gives them more room to explore new pedagogies and offer personalised attention to their students.

The use of multimedia for education has long been embraced by teachers. Today’s tech-savvy students make this the perfect time for teachers to incorporate more engaging, interactive modes of teaching. Ways that help the school use its resources creatively and allow a more holistic, individualised and independent way of learning. Blended learning can be incorporated into the curriculum step-by-step. Often

teachers start by choosing the appropriate websites and digital resources. Open source materials, abundant on the internet, make it easy to find topnotch supplemental

information to classroom learning materials. Based on how a student responds to such learning, teachers develop an individualised path.

a COLLabOratIvE apprOaCh

Blended learning enables collaboration between teachers and students. Using the right PCs, students can not only access richer, more engaging material, they also express themselves more creatively. The right hardware optimises the use of online resources and learning platforms. This also allows for teachers to pay more personalised attention to students, enhancing learning outcomes.

But a transition to blended learning doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive. What’s required are multifunctional tools that can shift between the classrooms, the lab, the cafeteria and beyond. PCs that can stream high-end videos and stay connected without compromise. Mobile devices that are durable enough for students and powerful enough for teachers.

INtEGratED INNOvatION

There are many advantages to blended learning. Students not only learn better with enriched-virtual and rotation learning—which exposes them to a variety of

learning techniques—they are also more prepared for the demands of university where group learning and research skills are essential for success.

Using the Twist, students can work on collaborative environments online. It enables teachers to incorporate a wide range of innovative materials using technology and ensures that students have equal access to these materials.

Recent studies show that this method actually increases what students absorb (Dean and associates, 2011). Moreover, it has also been proved that integrative learning demonstrates improved student satisfaction and interaction. The Twist works both ways—for the teachers to curate knowledge and for the students to consume and create it.

DIffErENtIatED LEarNING

The ability to custom-design instructions that fit students' needs, or differentiated learning, is a great advantage of blended learning. Looking at students’ interests, learning styles and abilities, teachers can decide the suitable curriculum materials, activities and environment.

Adding flexibility to the time and place in which students have access to education makes it easier for students from different backgrounds and lifestyles to continue their studies, no matter what. Even students who are absent may view materials and submit homework while not being in class so they don’t fall behind. Some students study at their own slower pace to better understand concepts whilst those who learn at a faster pace can work ahead. Self-pacing also makes for higher completion rates. It makes learning a more involved process.

Blended learning enables teachers to approach learning in a whole new way. Since it allows more room for the teacher to be involved with the students in a personalised manner, many teachers encourage this blended approach to the curriculum.

However, this requires that they have the perfect tools for the job. Built sturdy and for staying connected, the ThinkPad Twist is your anytime blended education companion.
