A nice show of In-lamb sheep were

for-ward for the first special sale of the season. All shown in good order, all breeds

were well bid for by a travelled and local ringside of buyers. The sale set off to

a good start with a pen of 14 Texel x in lamb to the Dutch Spotted realising £205

from East Mains who sold others between £170-£192. Older ewes from the

same home saw Texels sell from £130 - £160. Both Scotch and Cheviot mules

again from East Mains sold between £130-£135. A flock reduction from M

Grierson, Peebles topped at £158 for young 1 crop Texel ewes with the Mule

Shearlings to £155. Mule Ewes 2-3crop £150-£152.

The opening sale for store hoggs of 2021 can only be described as mind blowing with one

of the dearest trades ever witnessed in Bentham. Just short of 2000 hoggs forward and a

mixed show of quality, all in an impressive average of £88.30 was achieved. +£18.81 on

the year, Nicer bred lambs £100+ all sale long with Texel x from M Ratcliffe topping the

sale at £121. Stronger continental and Suffolks £105-£119 with Suffolks from RS&EJ

Longdon, Chinley to £120. A run of 248 mainly continental lambs from DR Rowland & N

Woodward topped at £112 twice to average an amazing £105.49. Hoggs for later in spring

selling mainly in the £90’s with plainer types in the £70’s or at realisation. Mule lambs

topped at £100 on 2 occasions firstly from PM&ST Entwistle then a pen of 29 from

JC Nelson & Son, Bull n Cave. Next cut down selling between £85-£95 with the longer term

leaner sorts either side of £80. A very mixed show in the horned lamb categories, the

high-light without doubt was a run of 180 SBF lambs with the top pen to £93 followed at £88 for

a ring full. Swales to £94 from D J Charnley with Herdwicks from J Bownass to £97. Regular

supporters B Dickinson, Brockstones sold another nice pen of Kendal Roughs to £83.50.

Nicer farming lambs £60-£75 with smaller types £30-£50 although not many. Overall a

marvellous sale with more required in 2 weeks.

Auctioneer’s Report (Will Alexander): The Elite Breeding Sale was another

great success, a total of 48 sold to a full clearance to both ringside and online

bidders. A tremendous consignment from Proctors Farms were much admired.

Their best, lot 6, sired by Sportsmans Batman and scanned twins to Lyfni

Droog, soaring to £3500, heading north to Scotland. Next in the ring also

tipped £1000, realising £1300, carrying a single to Proctors Dingo Dollar she

headed home with James Taylor, Kendal. Other best sorts £700-900, with

James Sanderson peaking at £900 twice, Texel shearlings averaging an

impressive £858. Beltex from the same home to £800, whilst gimmer hoggs

peaked at £350 again from Proctors Farms. Haig Murrays Bleus and Rouges

topped at £400 & £380, whilst the last sheep in the ring, a Blue Texel Shearling

from E Mckechnie was bought online at £600.

Auctioneer’s Report (Will Alexander):

Trade for the best blue calves continues to be as strong as ever, with the fight to the top

from Andy Gibbons and the team at Catteralls Farm and Steve Wallbank & Co at Park

House. The Gibbons’ coming out on top with their best bull at £475 with the Wallbank’s

realising £470. Plenty of the best blues over £435, with the next draw £380-400, very few

of the young sorts forward. Heifers not just as sharp, the best £305-£340 with the next

draw £270-£290. A nice run of strong bulls from Wyn Hull sold to a top of £505 for a

Charollais, with others £470-£490. Strongest Angus bulls to £430 from the Wallbanks,

with John Lawson’s best to £400, nice milky sorts £250-£290. Heifers to a top of £200

twice, again from the Lawson’s, younger types £140-£180. A two tier entry of black and

whites, the strong calves to £330 for a superb Friesian from Alan & Stephen Wright,

Stauvins, stealing the top spot from the Wallbank’s who sold their run from £200-£220

and the best rocketing to £285. Other strong sorts £140-£180. No mediums, just smalls all

either side of £30.

Auctioneer’s Report (Greg MacDougall): A larger show of cast sheep forward with all

classes once again up a gear with some being £5-£10 dearer. Pure bred ewes selling at

ex-treme rates with a pen of 9 Texels from R Robinson, Woodcock Hill realising £174.50 with A

F Harker, Bend Gate selling 6 to £173.50. Best ewes in general £158-£172. Heavy ewes

£110-£140 with good selling types around £100. Lesser ewes ie feeding ewes and smaller

hill types £65-£90 depending on size. Heavy Mule ewes in general £105-£117 topping at

£120.50 from A J Wood, Withy Trees. Cheviotmules to £126.50 from East Mains. Smaller

fleshy types in the £90’s with leaner lighter sorts eitherside of £80. Best of the horned

ewes selling from £80-£90 with SBF from M Kidd, Congleton to £94.50. Medium types £55

-£65 with plain £30-£40. Rams forward in larger numbers with a mostly plain show on

offer. Strongest Ctl and Suffolks £120-150 topping at £170 from Bank House Farms. Hill

Rams to £106.50 for Lonks from T Robinson & Son, Catlow with trade in general £73-£93.

Goats in big demand with several customers looking for larger numbers. A Kirby, Kirkby

Stephen topped at £94.50.

No need for fancy catchphrases here as the trade talks for itself. New vendors arriving each week with some great consignments of fed hoggs from the Scottish Borders, Cheshire, Lincolnshire as well as plenty from local areas with vendors reaping the rewards for all breeds and weights of prime hoggs. An excellent show of 3324 averaging 263.9p SQQ 265.1p or £108.36 a head, bearing in mind this includes Swale, Mule and hill breeds. The sale topped at £160 for Beltex from Procters Farm Ltd with a pair of 40kg Beltex from the same home topping per kilo at 338.8p. Best hoggs in general 300p-335p with export types 270p-285p. A nice run of 235 well presented hoggs from P Wilson, Newark sold to average £124.30. First time vendors S Turkington from the Borders topped at £141.50 while P Weaver of Newark topped at £135 to average £131.26. A great run of quality export and butcher type hoggs from Skinner Bros of Melton Mowbray sold to £142 with others to £140 averaging all in £131. Also hitting the high spots was Carol Parker at £150 with Benthams very own Tommy Abbott selling his best hoggs to £149 and £148. Knocking on per kilo were MR&JE Davis at 335.7p, R S Green, Craggs 329.5p, 329p and NL & C J Brown at 325p. Hoggs weighing 45kg-50kg often £120-£130. Vendors with Mule hoggs need not look for the deadweight option, J & M Whitfield & Sons, High Park House topped with heavies at £121.50 while a grand run from N & K Forshaw sold to £120 and £119 x3, also topping the section per kilo at 256.5p. SBF hoggs to £112 or 273.7p from T Abbott with a pen of lightweights from WJ Coltherd, Selkirk to 262.9p. Swales to £107.50 from T Robinson & Son, Catlow with plenty other pens selling between £92-£103. Lightweights with meat around 230p. Some nice Cheviots forward with JJ&M Metcalfe topping per head at £122.50 while local feeder A T Burrow, High Snab sold a pen to 271.8p or £106. Lightweight hoggs of all categories keenly sought after. Better end ctl 280p-320p topping at 335.7p or £117.50 with plainer/store types 240-260p. More hoggs required next week to supply this busy ringside of 12 active buyers!!

Sale Day payments will not be possible but cheques

and BACS statements will be posted out as

nor-mal on Fridays.

Buyers MUST sign in on arrival outside the sale ring.

Attendance at markets must be restricted to those

conducting business and only 1 buyer per

business is permitted to enter the site

Face coverings must be worn by everyone attending

the site, at all times (this includes market staff) –

exemptions are permitted for anyone with a

medical condition that allows a face covering not

to be worn.

Strict Social Distancing to be maintained (minimum

of 2 metres). The wearing of face coverings is

NOT a substitute for the need to maintain Social

Distancing at all times.

The Auction Café will be open on a takeaway basis

only serving hot & cold food & drinks.
