The Monthly Committee of the St. George’s

and St. James’s Dispensary, at the close of their Labours, and of the first Year of the Establishment, feel it their duty, in laying before the Governors a Statement of the Receipts and Disbursements, briefly to point out the leading measures to which their at¬

tention has been directed ; and to shew in what man¬

ner, and to what extent the benevolent objects of the Institution have been attained and realized.

The subject which first engaged the consideration of the Committee, was the selection of a convenient House in a fit situation; and their choice fell upon that, now occupied by the Dispensary, at No 14, Old Burlington Street: being in a central situation with regard to the two Parishes, and selected (with a desire to avoid whatever might interfere with the Interest of similar Institutions) at a distance from any other Dispensary. The necessary alterations and the furnishing of the House and Shop were effected with a strict regard to economy: and with so little loss of time, that the Dispensary was opened for the relief of Patients on the 20th of April, within a Month after taking possession of the premises.

The subjoined Return shews the total number of Patients that have been admitted during the Year, ending the 2nd of April, 1818. Of these, it is to be observed, that, at least, as large a proportion as one-fifth has consisted of Infants, and young Children:

many of whom have been thus restored to their Fa¬

milies, and one of the most important objects of the Charity satisfactorily accomplished. Of the re¬

mainder, many have been Servants of either sex : but the generality have consisted of the most indus¬

trious and deserving of the lower Classes, whose general good conduct and gratitude sufficiently mark the estimation they attach to the benefits bestowed on them, while the increasing number of appli¬

cations fully confirms the expedience, as well as the utility of such an Institution within these popu¬

lous Parishes. But it has not been to the limits, only, of these Parishes that relief has been confined: the Medical Officers (not availing themselves of the strict letter of the Regulations) have readily extended their visits, to Patients at their own homes, far into the sufrbunding Districts; and have seldom failed to be rewarded by the grateful acknowledgements of the Sick, and their Friends.

4

The number of Patients, who have been vacci¬

nated during the period embraced by this Report, may, to some, appear small. But it must be recol¬

lected that there are several Institutions, at the West End of the Town, exclusively adapted to the practice of Vaccination: that it is performed at all

(7)

commendation ; and that, hitherto, it may not have been generally known that Vaccination is included among the objects of this Charity. The Delivery of poor married Women at their own habitations, it is believed, is one of the most acceptable benefits conferred by this Institution But the great expence, attending this branch of the practice of the Dispen¬

sary, necessarily confines the relief afforded by it, to persons residing within the strict limits of the Parishes,

Taking, thus, a retrospective view of the quan¬

tity of sickness and suffering which has been relieved during the first year of the existence of this Charity, at so small an expence to individual Subscribers, and looking forward to the increasing number of applications, the Committee cannot refrain from congratulating the Governors at large, on the success¬

ful establishment of an Institution, so well calcu¬

lated to assist the numerous sick Poor of these Pa¬

rishes; wherein no such speedy and effectual means cf gratuitous relief had been before opened ; and they indulge the confident hope, that the continued and increasing support of its numerous Contributors, and of the Friends of humanity in general, will enable it to meet, without difficulty, the unavoidably ex¬

tensive calls upon its funds, and to maintain the Character it has already acquired.

The Accounts of the Institution are made up to A 3

December 31st, 1817. It is hoped that the Governors will see the necessity of this arrangement, in the extreme difficulties which would have occurred by breaking in upon the succeeding year; and that they will, as far as possible, permit their Subscrip¬

tions to be dated, in future, from the first of January in each year.

To the illustrious Patron and Patroness, and to the most Honourable the President and Vice- Pre¬

sidents of this Charity, the thanks of the Institu¬

tion are particularly due, for the support and en¬

couragement they have so liberally bestowed upon it.

And the Committee feel themselves called upon to express, in a marked manner, their acknowledgments to The very Reverend the Dean of Canterbury,

and The very Reverend the Dean of Chester;—

to the former, for the free and ready use of the Parish Church of Saint James:—and to the latter, for the admirable, and very efficient Sermon, preached by him, at that Church, in behalf of this Institution.

At the First Annual Meeting of tho Governors, field the Second of April, 1818

,

Jonh Chamier, Esq.

in the Chair, the following Resolutions were u- nanimously passed.

RESOLVED, That the above Report of the Monthly Committee be received and printed for distribution among the Governors of this

Dispensary.

given to the Treasurers, for their at¬

tention to the management of the Funds

of this Institution and for their Zeal in promoting its general Interests.

Resolved, That the Thanks of this Meeting and the Public at large, are due to the Medical Officers of this Institution, for the unwearied Exertions and profes¬

sional Skill displayed by them in the arduous duties of their respective de¬

partments ; from the result of which, this Meeting, convinced of the general usefulness of the Dispensary, confi¬

dently looks forsvard to its increasing and permanent Prosperity.

Resolved, That the Thanks of this Meeting be giv¬

en to Mr. J. FI. Fisher, as well for his Exertions in the office of Secretary, as for his very liberal Proposal of relin¬

quishing the whole of his Salary of <£40.

fully accepts his Offer of continuing Honorary Secretary to this Dispensary.
