Pastor’s Column

Dear Parishioners,

Hard to believe that we are already finished with the sermon series on the “seven-headed monster” named “Self-Seeking.” The seven heads, as you recall, are the seven deadly (capital) sins. We started this series on the Epiphany and remembered how the three Kings were Christ-seekers, not self-seekers. I learned a lot about the seven deadly sins myself. I found it fruitful to look into the mirror and see the how the different sins are alive in me.

The Christian life is like a game of Whac-A-Mole. Every time one of these heads pops up, we hit it with the armor of God (rosary, sacraments, prayers) and in the name of Jesus Christ!

“Resist the devil, and he will take flight,” says the Apostle James in the Bible. It is possible to live a life of God. In Lent, we remember that Jesus Himself went to the desert and was there tempted by the Devil. Jesus won.

As for us, sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. Remember that Jesus picked St. Peter to be an apostle and first pope, even knowing at the time of the selection that Peter would betray Him three times. Jesus picked us, even knowing what sorts of sinners we would be at various times in our lives. Yet he summons us BACK to himself all the time. Lent is a time to cooperate with God’s grace in a special way, especially through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Check out the “40 Days, 40 Ways” sheet in this bulletin.

We’re entering the desert this Lent with Jesus...let’s not waste the wilderness!

Blessings, Fr. Mike

St. Vincent News

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

Maybe the best way of entering the spirit of this weekend’s readings is to hear them through the ears of adult converts preparing for baptism. That is the original purpose of Lent—preparation for baptism during the Easter Vigil Service.

The first reading tells us about how God rescued creation through water and the making of the cove-nant signed with a rainbow. The Gospel reminds us of Jesus’ forty days in the desert and his struggle with Satan.

Though catechumens among us are few, the read-ings that illuminate what they are doing speak directly to the rest of us. Lent calls us all to renew and to enter more deeply into the meaning of our own baptismal promises.

Remember these promises: Do you reject sin so as to live in the freedom of God’s children? Do you reject the glamor of evil and refuse to be mastered by sin? Do you reject Satan, and all his works and all his empty promises?

This week as we pray, let us talk to God about how we are keeping our side of the covenant. And what we are doing during Lent that will help us to live out our promises more fully so that on Easter we will be able to renew these promises with a resounding “I do.”

St. Vincent Wednesday Evening Rosary

Please join us in praying the Rosary for our nation next Wednesday, February 24th at 5:30pm in the Parish Hall.

Pray for Our Seminarians

We all know that we need more

Priests. One thing we can do

to help the situation is to pray for our seminarians. The Arch- diocese is helping us to do just that. Each parish is given a specific seminarian to pray for. St. Vincent’s Seminarian is

Liam Hosty. His home parish

Is St. Barnabas Parish in Indianapolis. He is in his first year of Theology, so he has several years to go before ordination. There are prayer cards with Liam’s picture on them by the doors of Church and in the Hall. Please take one to remind yourself to pray for more priests and especially, Liam.

St. Vincent First Communion—Feb. 24

Weather permitting: St. Vincent First Communion Parent meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Febru-ary 24th at 6:20pm in the School building.

Why I Choose St. Joe School

When we initially moved

back to Shelbyville, a

major factor in choosing

to do so was the ability to

send our children to

St. Joseph School. Multiple

friends and colleagues had

chosen St. Joe. for their

children's education, and

were more than happy to

provide experiences and

opinions they had through

the years. The recurring

theme when talking to them

was evident; there was nothing negative. Couple that

with a strong Catholic foundation and education and

our choice was made to not only make the move

back, but we had also found where our children

would go to school. Fast forward 4 years and we

could not be happier with our decision. To quote our

7 year old Ella, "My favorite subject is Religion and

my favorite thing about school is going to Church".

We are so proud at what St. Joe is doing to help us

provide a strong foundation for our kiddos.

How To Memorize the 7 Deadly Sins

Here’s how I teach the kids at school how to memo-rize the seven deadly (capital) sins:

S-L-A-P E-G-G

Sloth Lust Anger Pride Envy Gluttony Greed

Combating Greed and Envy

Every day, thank God for what you have and who you are

Every day, look in the mirror and say, “There is no one else I’d rather be.”

Help others to realize how special they are….by what you say to them and how you treat them

Youth especially struggle with a bad self-image. Help them learn to love themselves, for God made them and they are precious in His eyes...and ours!

How To Go To Confession

If the light is on and the door open, go in. Close the door. Kneel and say, “Bless me Father for I have sinned. My last confession was ____ days/weeks/ months ago. These are my sins: ________. For these and any sins I cannot remember at this time, I am sorry.” You need to list your sins in number and kind as best you can (e.g., “I said God’s name in vain three times” or “I was impure with myself two times” or “I yelled at my husband four times” etc.), but you don’t need to tell a story behind the sins. Frequent confessions help us ensure we aren’t leaving any-thing out. Just name the sins and a ballpark number of times. Then, the priest will say some words and give you a penance. Then he will say, “Now please make your Act of Contrition.” The Act of Contrition is right there in the confessional so don’t worry if you don’t know it by heart. Then, the priest will absolve your sins and you have a blank slate again! The penance is done after you leave confession.

Some Info About Greed & Envy

Last week, Fr. Mike talked about greed and envy in his sermon. What are the warning signs of uncontrolled greed? Here are some thoughts from Manfred Kets de Vries:

 Overly self-centered behavior becomes the first give-away of greedy people. Greedy people are always say-ing “me, me, me” with very little regard for the needs and feelings of others.

 Envy and greed are like twins. While greed is a strong desire for more and more possessions (such as wealth and power), envy goes one step further and includes a strong desire by greedy people for the possessions of others.

 Greedy people lack empathy. Caring—being concerned about the feelings of others—is not part of their reper-toire. As such, they have little qualms about causing pain to others. Their inability to empathize, their lack of genu-ine interest in the ideas and feelings of others, and their unwillingness to take personal responsibility for their be-havior and actions makes them very difficult people to be with.

 They are never satisfied. Greedy people look at the world as a zero-sum game. Instead of thinking that eve-ryone would benefit as the pie gets larger, they view the pie as a constant and want to have the biggest part. They truly believe that they deserve more, even if it comes at someone else’s expense.

 Greedy people are experts in manipulation. They are highly talented in taking credit for work done by others. They can be charming, but their principal agenda is to have people around them that feed their ego.

 Greedy people are into the short run; they are focused on satiating their immediate needs and leave it to others to cope with the consequences. To illustrate, as leaders of corporations, they are more interested in getting their bonuses, instead of making investments for future inno-vation, or to share whatever benefits accrued with their employees.

 In the pursuit of their material needs, they know no lim-its. Greedy people are not good at maintaining bounda-ries. They will compromise moral values and ethics to achieve their goals. They look for loopholes or clever ways to outsmart the rules and regulations that have been put into place to moderate this kind of behavior. What about envy?

 Envy comes from a place of hurt -- from a feeling that you don’t have enough of this or that (not always materi-al things, by the way), or that you aren’t enough

 Envy torments the mind and heart

 Envy makes you wish you were someone else, or that you had what another has

 Envy makes one struggle terribly with self-image. It makes on to think he or she is not “worth it” or is no good at all

 Envy often happens because one hasn’t been loved enough

Pope Francis’ Letter On St. Joseph

(continued from last week)

5. A creatively courageous father (cont’d)

We should always consider whether we ourselves are protecting Jesus and Mary, for they are also mysteriously entrusted to our own responsibility, care and safekeeping. The Son of the Almighty came into our world in a state of great vulnerability. He needed to be defended, protected, cared for and raised by Joseph. God trusted Joseph, as did Mary, who found in him someone who would not only save her life, but would always provide for her and her child. In this sense, Saint Joseph could not be other than the Guardian of the Church, for the Church is the contin-uation of the Body of Christ in history, even as Mary’s motherhood is reflected in the motherhood of the Church.[23] In his continued protection of the Church, Joseph continues to protect the child and his

mother, and we too, by our love for the Church,

con-tinue to love the child and his mother.

That child would go on to say: “As you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me” (Mt 25:40). Consequently, every poor, needy, suffering or dying person, every stranger, every prisoner, every infirm person is “the child” whom Joseph continues to protect. For this reason, Saint Joseph is invoked as protector of the unfortunate, the needy, exiles, the afflicted, the poor and the dying. Consequently, the Church cannot fail to show a special love for the least of our brothers and sisters, for Jesus showed a particular concern for them and personally identified with them. From Saint Joseph, we must learn that same care and re-sponsibility. We must learn to love the child and his mother, to love the sacraments and charity, to love the Church and the poor. Each of these realities is always the child and his mother.

Prayer Before & After Mass

Remember that it is a

beautiful practice to pray before Mass and after Mass. Offer a pious, heartfelt prayer before Mass asking Jesus to touch and transform your life. Offer

another such prayer at the end of Mass, thanking God for the Eucharist.

A Prayer for More Priests & Religious

Lord,

You told us that "The harvest indeed is great but the laborers are few. Pray, therefore, the Lord of the har-vest to send laborers into His fields." We ask You to strengthen us as we follow the vocation to which You have called us. We pray particularly for those called to serve as priests and religious: Those whom You have called, Those You are calling now, Those You will call in the future. May they be open and respon-sive to the call of serving Your people. We ask this through Christ Our Lord.

Amen.

Words of Wisdom

If we don’t teach our children who God is, Someone else will teach them everything He isn’t.

St. Vincent de Paul Society of Shelby County

SVdP Reopening Announcement

First, we want to thank God for being with us and helping us during this Doggone Covid Pandemic. Thank you so much to the Blue River Foundation for keeping us in the black with their most gracious grants to help strictly Covid affected people in Shelby County. Then to you donors, that have sent us donations also to get us through the tough times for those everyday requests that are not Covid related. Without you all, we can’t do it. There are many of you; one group, the kids from St. Joseph’s Catholic School, raised ~$1,600 and are purchasing food cards for our less fortunate friends in Shelby County; that was particularly heart warming.

Thanks to you ALL!

Reopening Schedule

We will NOT make a big PR news flash about this as the last time we reopened we broke records for attendance and we just can’t handle that yet. March 6th: Warehouse only open 9:00 - 11:00am.

Accepting donations at 628 Hodell Street.

March 13th: Store reopens, normal hours

10:00am - 2:00pm at 424 E. Jackson Street. Masks required plus social distancing and limited

number of customers.

By that time we will have approximately 15 fully vaccinated helpers available.

Sign up Genius will be turned back on soon.

Unfortunately: (taking into consideration advice

from trusted health advisors) Children will not be allowed into the store yet. Yes, we hate that!

March 22nd: SVdP meetings resume at St.

Vin-cent Hall from 6:30 - 7:30pm. After that meeting we will determine how often to meet. Masks and social distancing etc. still in effect.

Thank you from your SVdP people.
