To help our clients succeed in their projects, Petzl is constantly striving to respond to their needs. And the needs are many: protection, durability, minimal weight, comfort, ergonomics. These demands are always pushing us to come up with new ideas, and from there we tackle the design of our products. In this vein, the year 2018 will bring with it some exciting innovations to our users.
In the verticality sector, discover new versions of our climbing and mountaineering harnesses, entirely redesigned for more comfort. In terms of ergonomics and safety, the new BOREO helmet sets a new standard, accessible to all.
As for headlamps, three new products will each light the night in their own way. TIKKID is "My First Petzl" for young would-be adventurers. The rechargeable BINDI, with 200 lumens for only 35 grams, is the ultra-compact and practical solution for moving around and training on a regular basis, no matter what the conditions. And finally, for caving, the power of the new DUO is combined with an innovation sure to be appreciated by every member of a team: the FACE2FACE anti-glare function.
These new products, along with many others, can be found in this 2018 workbook. Happy reading. We wish you a great season.

At the service of every user
The Petzl adventure began with Fernand Petzl's passion for caving, a
passion to which he dedicated his talents as a craftsman. An expertise
grew for the design and creation of solutions for ascending, descending,
belaying and moving about in the dark.
In 1970, the first "Fernand Petzl" brand products were produced in a
workshop in Saint-Nazaire-Les Eymes (Isère, France).
Since then, the Petzl company, established in 1975, has grown into an
international enterprise, all the while preserving its personal feel and the
passion that drove Fernand Petzl.
At Petzl, offering solutions for the user starts with a conversation with
him, to better understand his needs and to provide the things he may
need in different phases of a project: technical advice, training, tools,
equipment. And, through innovation, allowing him to imagine other
projects.
Solutions for sports enthusiasts and professionals
Today, Petzl's solutions are present in many sectors:
• outdoor activities: climbing, mountaineering, ski mountaineering, trail
running, via ferrata, canyoning...
• work at height: rope access, tree care, energy and networks, framing
and roofing...
• rescue: technical rescue, self-rescue, evacuation on mechanical lifts
• personal lighting for the workshop, for maintenance, for industrial
worksites
• equipment for tactical operations units
Petzl’s mission is to create innovative tools and services that
allow men and women to progress, to position, and to protect
themselves in vertical environments, as well as to light their way
in the dark. We are always searching for the best solutions for
user needs in terms of performance, ergonomics, comfort, and
reliability. The demands, commitment, and willingness of users
are what guide our approach to supporting them in their pursuit
of the inaccessible. We have stood right by their side for the
last forty years.

For over 40 years, Petzl has built on its expertise in the design and manufacture of products for verticality and lighting. Today, Petzl
designs, produces and distributes millions of products around the world.
Building a Petzl product requires expertise with a wide range of materials (textiles, metals, plastics) as well as with specific
technologies (plastic processing, sewing, injection molding, forging, LEDs, electronics...). This expertise allows us to design
equipment that fully meets the technical requirements for its use: resistance to impacts, abrasion, extreme temperatures...

Design work, Research Department in Crolles, France
Design
The Petzl research department in Crolles, France, integrates all
the disciplines related to the design of a product: mechanical,
textile, electronic, optic and computing. Starting at the design and
prototype phases, the reliability of the product and user safety are
continually evaluated with a strong focus on the risks of usage.
Testing
In Crolles, Petzl has labs dedicated to testing verticality products
and headlamps. These tests often go above and beyond the
required standards to help validate the reliability of products and
safety for the user: dynamic fall tests, impact resistance, cyclic
testing, performance, headlamp beam quality and burn times. They
are complemented by testing in the field, controlled or not, in terms
of ergonomics an d reliability.
Production and inspection
Petzl's production sites are based in Crolles, Eybens, and
Rotherens, France, and in Rawang, Malaysia.
This component is complemented by long-term partnerships with
key suppliers in Europe and Asia. Our buying and quality control
teams work closely with suppliers to guarantee a standard of
product reliability and quality that meets our requirements.
During manufacture, quality control is found throughout the
production chain: auto-inspection of operations by machines,
human inspection at key points, reinforced by error-proof systems,
final individual inspection of each product.
Distribution
Petzl distributes products to more than fifty countries via a
distribution network and subsidiaries in the US, Germany, Spain,
Italy.

The Petzl Foundation:
- encouraging learning and risk management to avoid accidents
- promoting the preservation of hard-to-access ecosystems
- contributing to enhanced understanding of current practices and their environments
Climbing towards a summit or progressing in the vertical world gives birth to passions that make women
and men grow, push, rejoice and dream. For 10 years, the Petzl Foundation's mission has been to
support or initiate projects for the greater good through its activities in the mountain and vertical spheres,
projects that help balance humankind's place in natural, cultural, and economic environments.
Example of project supported by the Petzl Foundation: the SERAC database
SERAC: sharing incidents in mountain sports in order to
improve prevention
Since December 2015, the SERAC database at www.camptocamp.org
has collected stories of incidents and near-misses from those involved.
The goal of this project is to broaden perspectives on prevention,
thanks to scientific analysis of the scenarios collected. In January 2017,
researchers at the Laboratory of Vulnerability and Innovation in Sport
(Lyon 1, France) released the first findings from the SERAC database;
the results are promising.
After 11 test months at www.camptocamp.org, the SERAC database
has already collected 184 testimonials. In a report published in January
2017 (available at camptocamp.org), researchers identified the main
factors at the root of the reported events and tried to better understand
the circumstances or typical scenarios that tend to lead to accidents.
Specifically, they found that experience may not be enough, that
pressure from an over-zealous group can sometimes push the leader to
make a judgment error, and that certain opportunities may appear too
tempting to pass up even when there are red flags.
The report also details the contributors' profiles. The category most
implicated represents a 26 to 35-year-old male, at considerable to
expert skill level, making more than 15 outings a year. A significant part
of the study focuses on ski touring accident scenarios, most of which
involve an avalanche (63 % of ski touring incidents).
In terms of mountaineering and climbing, a climber fall is the most
reported accident (47 % of testimonials) followed by falling rock or ice
(34 %).
These analyses confirm that the scenarios associated with incidents
and near-misses have a great pedagogical value. As opposed to
accidents, they can identify the factors that helped avoid a real
accident.
Additional testimonials in the years to come should help refine the
knowledge of scenarios that could lead to accidents. The objective is
to build a shared experience and to encourage the development of a
culture more focused on risk management.

Choosing your Petzl climbing and mountaineering harness
Petzl harnesses are designed to meet the needs of vertical enthusiasts, whatever their particular passion or level.
Designs for all body types:
Designs for all body types:
• Harnesses WITH adjustable leg loops, suitable for all body types and all seasons (winter and summer use). • Harnesses WITHOUT adjustable leg loops for optimal lightness and freedom of movement.
• Women's harnesses with contoured waistbelt, proportional rise and waistbelt/leg loop sizing.
Capacity to carry equipment suited to the activity:
Capacity to carry equipment suited to the activity:
• For gym climbing, via ferrata, glacier tr avel or classic mountaineering, two equipment loops are sufficient. • For crag or multi-pitch climbing, four equipment loops are necessary.
• For activities requiring a lot of equipment, such as trad climbing, technical mountaineering or ice climbing, a fifth equipment loop is desirable.
HARNESSES
Product lines designed for all activities:
Product lines designed for all activities:
• The PERFORMANCE line designed for intensive, all-terrain use: high-end technical harnesses that meet the need for light weight, mobility and comfort.
• The DISCOVER line is suitable for occasional use in climbing, ski-mountaineering or via ferrata: versatile and adjustable, these harnesses are comfortable for long suspensions and fit all body types.
WIREFRAME Technology
WIREFRAME technology uses high-modulus polyethylene (HMPE) strands. These strands are used in the waistbelt and leg loops to optimally distribute pressure, ensuring maximum comfort and freedom of movement for the climber. This construction gives the harness an exceptional weight-to-comfort ratio that makes it practically unnoticeable when worn. WIREFRAME technology, applied to a very sleek design with very slim technical lines, is perfectly suited to high-performance SITTA and ALTITUDE harnesses.
FUSEFRAME Technology
This construction uses thin thermoformed foam and doubled interior webbing for greater comfort and lightness. The webbing on the waistbelt and leg loops, as well as the strength elements (tool-holder attachment), are integrated into the foam to eliminate hard points. Further, a thin piece of fabric is fused to the waistbelt foam for better weight distribution. All this gives the harnesses smooth and clean exterior surfaces without adding thickness, for improved abrasion resistance. FUSEFRAME technology gives the HIRUNDOS and AQUILA harnesses a clean, smart design that is light and comfortable.
ENDOFRAME Technology
This construction combines thin foam with special (variable width) webbing sewn onto the foam for optimal load distribution. The waistbelt webbing is wider at the hips for lightweight support. Special attention has been given to providing maximum comfort: there are no pressure points or rub points on the waistbelt. ENDOFRAME technology is used on SAMA, SELENA, ADJAMA and LUNA harnesses.
FRAME Technology
This construction forms the core of CORAX, CALIDRIS and TOUR harnesses, and combines a thick layer of foam with central webbing on the waistbelt and leg loops. The load is distributed by the webbing that surrounds the foam. The construction allows for great durability and comfort during prolonged suspension on a climb.
For certain climbing and mountaineering harnesses, Petzl uses specific technologies: FRAME, ENDOFRAME, FUSEFRAME, or WIREFRAME. These constructions, which never sacrifice climber comfort, are adapted to the different expectations of the user, whether novice, active, or
high end.
