Year 4

Blended Learning Week 8

Here is the remote learning for your child to complete at home. You will find the timetable and learning activities. These activities cover the same objectives that will be covered in school and are part of our sequence of learning and our curriculum. We will be sharing Zoom links so that your child can access live lessons where appropriate.

Please complete your learning in the homework book that was sent home in September. If you need new exercise books, please let us know and we can arrange for them to be collected. Please add photographs of the completed learning to Class Dojo, ideally at the end of each day. We appreciate that this may not be possible but please be aware that we may not be able to provide any feedback if you return it too late.

We will try and provide feedback as soon as we can, but please bear with us as this may take a day or two whilst we teach a keyworker group at school.

If you have any questions or concerns particularly around accessing the learning, or you need learning printed off, please contact us via Class Dojo or our class email address which is [email protected] or [email protected]

Here is the timetable we will be following in school:

Core Learning Maths

As referenced in the timetable above, we are offering the chance for pupils at home to receive some live teaching. This is where they can watch the class teacher teaching Maths in the classroom. The lesson will begin at 11am with the input lasting between 20-30 minutes but we will leave the zoom lesson running so children can ask questions and share their learning.

Please be aware that where a substitute resource is more appropriate, we may direct you to White Rose Maths.

We will provide the pages from the textbook and practice books. Do not worry if you are unable to print them because the children can write the answers in their book or if you know how to write on the attachment then that would work too.

For children working at a different stage, differentiated work will also be available – see Year 1, 2 and 3 work from White Rose maths for those who need it (these will be sent directly to those pupils who require this). Extension activities are also attached for those that want to try them.

Mon WAL: About tenths and hundredths.

In this lesson, children will learn how to find hundredths as fractions. They will also recognise that 1 tenth is the same as 10 hundredths. Children may not be able to visualise what a hundredth is and what a tenth is. Ask: • How many squares are there in total? (100) What would the value of one square be? (1 out of 100) Can you write this as a fraction? • If 10 squares were covered, what would this be as a fraction? ( 10/100 ) Is there another way to write this? ( 1/10 ) This shows that one of the ten rows or columns has been covered. Children may not be able to see the relationship

between tenths and hundredths (for example, that 25/100 can be seen as 2/10 and 5/100 ). Ask: • Show 25/100 on the grid. How many full rows are there? What fraction is this? How many are le over? What fraction is this?

Tues WAL: About tenths and hundredths.

In this lesson, children will continue to see the link between tenths and hundredths using a number line. Children may not be able to see that the greater the denominator, the smaller the fraction. Ask: • Show 1/10 on the grid. Show 1/100 on the grid. Which is smaller? Children may not be able to see that a tenth is 10 times smaller than a hundredth. Ask: • If 10 pieces of cake out of a hundred were eaten what would that be as a fraction? ( 10/100 ) Is this similar to any other fractions you have seen before? ( 1/10 ) How many hundredths are in a tenth?

Weds WAL: About equivalent fractions.

In this lesson, children will use a fraction wall and fraction strips to identify equivalent fractions. Children may not be able to see that some fractions are not equivalent when the numerators are the same, but the denominators are different. Ask: • What is the same and what is different about these fractions? • Show me 2/3 on the fraction wall. Now show me 2/4 . What do you notice about the numerators? What do you notice about the denominators? What does this tell you? (For the same numerator, the greater the denominator, the smaller the number.)

Thurs WAL: About equivalent fractions.

In this lesson, children will continue to find equivalent fractions. They will look at the relationship between the numerators and denominators of fractions. Children may not see that they can multiply or divide fractions by different numbers to find an equivalent fraction, or they may struggle to

(3)

identify the common multiples. Ask: • What times-table do both denominators have in common? • Which times-table has both of these numbers in? • Can you list the multiples of the denominators?

Fri WAL: To simplify fractions

In this lesson, children will simplify fractions, initially with the aid of images and then with abstract fractions. Children may not simplify a fraction to its simplest form. Ask: • How did you simplify this fraction? Can you simplify it any further? • Are there any numbers that will divide into both the numerator and denominator?

Literacy

As referenced in the timetable above, we are offering the chance for pupils at home to receive some live teaching. This is where they can watch the class teacher teaching Literacy in the classroom. The lesson will begin at 9:30 straight after the virtual registration with the input lasting between 20-30 minutes but we will leave the zoom lesson running so children can ask questions and share their learning. Please be aware that where a substitute resource is more appropriate, we may direct you to Oak Academy.

We will provide the resources needed but do not worry if you are unable to print the resources because the children can write the answers in their book or if you know how to write on the attachment then that would work too.

Mon WAL: To plan our Viking myth.

In this lesson, the children will be introduced to this week’s tasks – to write a brief Viking myth based on Arthur and the Golden Rope. The children will build on their knowledge from the previous unit of work, and plan their myth using a boxing up planning grid. This myth will only have four parts – opening, build up, problem and resolution (this is in light of the amount of writing in the previous unit).

Tues WAL: To write our Viking myths.

In this lesson, the children will recap on the writing features they need to try and include in their myth. They will look at a teacher example of the opening and build-up, then they will write their own opening and build-up based on their planning grid.

Weds WAL: To write our Viking myths.

In this lesson, the children will recap on the writing features they need to try and include in their myth. They will look at a teacher example of the problem and resolution, then they will write their own problem and resolution based on their planning grid.

Thurs WAL: To edit and improve our Viking myths.

In this lesson, the children will be given whole class feedback and given time to edit and improve various aspects of their writing using editing stations.

Fri WAL: To share our Viking myths.

In this lesson, the children will have a chance to share their writing in a smaller group, receiving feedback about how well they have done.

Spellings

WAL: To explore the suffixes ‘-ful’ and ‘-less’.

Please watch the Oak Academy lessons to explore the use of the ‘ful’ and ‘less’ suffixes. In these lessons, they will explain the rules around ending words in ‘ful’ and ‘less’ and also give you a chance to practice these spelling words:

To investigate suffixes: -ful and -less suffixes (thenational.academy)

Foundation Subjects

Here are the Foundation lesson objectives for this week. These lessons will be live at 1:30pm each day. They will consist of the teaching input, then we encourage children to complete the activity away from the screen.

Mon History: WAL: About Viking runes.

In this lesson, the children will be introduced to how Vikings used Runes to communicate and record their history. They will be introduced to the rune alphabet and will have an opportunity to create their own words using Viking runes.

Tues Science: WAL: To recognise how sounds are made Part 2

In this lesson, the children will be introduced their new science unit of learning which is all about sound. There are no resources needed for this lesson and the children will be shown what their new unit is all about as of this introductory lesson. They will discuss sounds we hear in daily life and share what they already know about sound as a class. Please note that this is a continuation of last week’s science lesson.

Wed Please note: There will be no live lesson this afternoon due to class teacher PPA.

Music: WAL: To learn how to read music.

Miss Cartledge has made powerpoints to go with the resources which will be available on the website.

Thurs

World Book Day – Activities will be shared on the day – no resources needed.

Fri This session will begin at 1:15pm to allow for an additional discussion about returning to school. PSHE: WAL: To prepare for returning to school.

In this lesson, the children will have a chance to talk with their class teacher and peers about returning to school. We will go over how will try to keep everyone safe, what the school day will look like and the activities we will do to help the children adjust to returning to a full class return.

History: WAL: About Viking Gods.

In this lesson, the children will learn about Viking religious, how they worshipped and their gods and goddesses that they

worshipped to. The children will choose a god of goddess to write about in more detail, showing what they have learnt about Norse religious.

Optional Extra Lessons for this week:

The DfE have set expectations that in Key Stage Two, pupils should be completing 4 hours of a learning each day at home. Currently, we are offering just over that and your children are doing a fantastic job. We are rotating subjects that we set at home but want you to also have an element of choice given that the children in school will receive additional lessons. These ideas and activities are OPTIONAL and do not have to be done if you don’t want to and we will not be expecting to see any evidence of these on Class Dojo, but they are there at your discretion.

Computing: Thursday

WAL explore coding using Purple Mash.

On Purple Mash, children can explore any of the coding challenges in the Chimp section. They have already completed the Guard the Castle and Superhero challenges but may wish to revisit these. Clink the link below to access the login page.

Wednesday

WAL: About how Christians express their faith today.

Click this link to watch and follow the lesson: How do Christians express their faith today? (thenational.academy)

In this lesson, we will be learning about some of the ways in which Christians express their faith. We will be learning about the symbol of the crucifix, Christian dress, Christian art and recapping the parable of the Good Samaritan, and how

Christians express their faith by adopting the message of this parable. PE:

Monday Friday

Go to afternoon resources and look at the physical activity diary. Here there are fourteen activities that you could try to keep active. You could even keep a diary of each day’s activities.

In school, we are looking at creating symmetrical shapes in gymnastics. Can you make symmetrical shapes with your body at home?

We are also practicing our tennis skills. This may be hard to replicate at home if you do not have the equipment so why not focus on improving your fitness using the activities from the physical activity diary.

French: WAL: To count to 12 and say our age.

Click this link to watch and follow the lesson: Saying the months (thenational.academy)

In this lesson, the children will recap phonic sounds in French, the numbers to 12 and how to say our age. Then they will explore the months in French.
