There is an ever-increasing need for rapid methods and instrumentation in the field of

food and feed safety and quality. Faster results, higher productivity, lower costs and

increased sensitivity are key words for all those professionally involved. Continuing

developments in analytical techniques lead to the emergence of a wide range of new

and dedicated rapid methods to complement the traditional methods. How to keep up

with these developments?

Rapid Methods Europe

is a series of events dedicated to the latest developments in

rapid methods and instrumentation for food and feed safety and quality. During the years

it has strengthened its position as an important meeting point for science and industry.

Rapid Methods Europe

presents new and cutting-edge technologies, the two main topics

being microbiology and contaminants detection.

Matchmaking

The best opportunity to meet companies and research institutes throughout Europe to identify possibilities for international R&D co-operation.

The development of new rapid detection techniques for food and feed diagnostics requires interaction between many stakeholders like the primary sector, food and feed producing companies, retailers, biotech companies, ICT companies, equipment manufacturers and government bodies. A prerequisite for the effective development of the required diagnostic systems meeting the criteria of all the stakeholders, is that compa-nies from the different areas are able to find one another and identify interesting partners for co-operation.

Purpose

The purpose of this matchmaking event is to create a meeting point for technology co- operation. It will offer companies and research organisations a forum to effectively meet and discuss with the parties, which are of interest in the area of food and feed diagnostics. The event will be tailor made with a programme consisting of one-to-one meetings with pre-matched partners.

Theme

The matchmaking event will focus on R&D collaboration in food and feed diagnostics.

Registration

Interested parties can fill in their organisation profile on the back of the Conference Registration Form, or on-line at www.bastiaanse-communication.com, in which they:

• describe their company (main activities, type of organisation, area of expertise, size of organisation, experience in international R&D co-operation);

• describe possible project ideas; and

• describe the profile of potential partners (type of organisation, area of expertise). The organisation profiles will be will be published in an on-line catalogue on the website of

Rapid Methods Europe 2009. These profiles serve as a tool for a careful pre-matching process, which will bring together potential partners with the same objectives and complementary expertise.

Registration for the matchmaking event can be submitted until 15 December 2007. As from this date the registered parties will be invited to indicate those persons they would like to meet. Individual bilateral meetings will be booked in advance. Each participant in the matchmaking event will receive an individual meeting schedule. The final programme will be co-ordinated by the Secretariat of

Rapid Methods Europe 2009.

The D-Count®, BactiFlow®ALS and the BactiFlow® systems, all based on flow-cytometry technology, have been specifically designed by AES-CHEMUNEX to provide fast microbiological results, from raw material to finished product. All systems are combining speed of detection with high sensitivity level and therefore significantly reduce the time to result for microbiology testing. The AES-CHEMUNEX rapid microbiology systems can be easily implemented in routine quality control laborato-ries. beyond the blue lines: molecular detection systems

using innovative lfd technology

Sponsored and presented by Forsite Diagnostics. Forsite specialises in extending the use of lateral flow technology across the food and agribusiness industries, creating value and new opportunities. Our exper-tise lies in developing and manufacturing diagnostic and detection tools based on appropriate combina-tions of standard and innovative lateral flow technologies. In our key markets, testing is often required away from the laboratory and our development programmes reflect this need for tests which combine consistent performance with robust, simple methods. The workshop will introduce three areas of particu-lar importance for the future usage of LFDs in food and agribusiness settings: disease identification using novel molecular methods, improving sensitivity and specificity through LFD/PCR approaches, and result quantification.

Part I Novel disease identification with PDplus™. Forsite has a long track record of marketing LFDs for plant diseases, under the Pocket Diagnostic™ brand. PDplus™ takes the concept further through using lab based PCR to identify pathogens to species level from an LFD which detects at the genus level. Introduced first forPhytophthora, this technique offers potential for precise identifi-cation for many other plant or animal diseases.

Part II Combining LFD/PCR for on-site pathogen detection. Integration of isothermal PCR with novel LFD techniques has led to major advances in on-site pathogen detection. Forsite is developing a range of applications, including a licensed rapid NA preparation step, for plant and food-borne pathogens.

Part III Data capture from LFDs in a QC context. Reliable data capture from semi-quantitative LFDs is an on-going requirement in quality control situations. Forsite’s new hand-held LFD Reader over-comes the challenges of factory floor data collection, with BlueTooth download to a PC for long-term storage and analysis.

EN ISO 16140 forms the basis of the MicroVal organisation, thus fulfill-ing EU legislation. The MicroVal organisation consists of: (i) an impartial European Board of Experts: MicroVal General Committee with all stakeholders represented, their primary focus being the develop-ment and maintenance of the MicroVal validation and certification system; (ii) MicroVal Certification Body group, open for participation by EU certification bodies; (iii) a neutral MicroVal Secretariat man-aged by a Standardization Institute not involved in certification activities; and (iv) European network of expert laboratories, reviewers and auditors.

rapid methods europe2009 will take place at the NH Leeuwenhorst Conference Centre and Hotel located in Noordwijkerhout in the country-side of the western part of the Netherlands. The conference centre is close to the cities Amsterdam and The Hague, and approximately 20 minutes from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Participants are responsible for making their own room reservations by using the enclosed Hotel Accom-modation Form, which should be faxed or sent to the Secretariat.

rapid methods europe2009 issues a call for abstracts, inviting the submission of abstracts to two categories:

• call for contributed papers (oral presentation); • call for posters.

Interested participants are strongly encouraged to submit one-page abstracts for papers and posters not later than 15 December 2008. The members of the Advisory Committee will evaluate the abstracts and inform the participants of the form in which their presentation will be included in the conference pro-gramme (i.e., oral presentation or poster) not later than 31 December 2008.
