Application deadline is August 1, 2016 for Fall Semester; December 1, 2016 for Spring Semester.

DETAILED INFORMATION FOR COMPLETING YOUR APPLICATION:

Admission as a visiting student for a year or less is possible if you have been attending a school that is accredited by the American Bar Association.

• Visiting students may register with CAS if they wish, or may submit a paper application (available at our website: https://

www.law.umn.edu/admissions/jd-admissions/transfer-visiting-jd-students).

• You must provide an official transcript showing grades earned in your entire first two years of law study. If, at the time of application, second semester grades are not yet available, you may submit your application with only first semester grades. You will be required to submit a final transcript, including second semester grades as soon as they are available.

• The Admissions Committee reserves the right to reconsider admission decisions once final transcripts are received.

• You must have a Letter of Good Standing, verifying that you are eligible to attend as a visiting student, sent directly to the Law School by your current law school. Please mail to: Office of Admissions, 290 Mondale Hall, University of

Minnesota Law School, 229 19th Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55455. (Please note: LSAC does not process Letters of Good Standing.)

The deadline for Visiting Student applications is August 1, 2016 for Fall Semester; December 1, 2016 for Spring Semester.

Application Form

• You must submit this form either electronically at LSAC.org or mail a completed paper application to: Office of Admissions, 290 Mondale Hall, University of Minnesota Law School, 229 19th Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55455.

• You must submit a $75 nonrefundable application fee.

• Payment: you will be able to pay the application fee via credit card when completing your application electronically at LSAC.org, or, if sending a paper application, include a check or money order made payable to University of Minnesota Law School.

• In the process of completing your application at LSAC.org, you will electronically sign/certify your application, which means a handwritten signature is not required for electronic applications.

(2)

• August 1, 2016 is the deadline for submitting an application for Fall Semester; December 1, 2016 for Spring Semester. All application materials must be received in the admissions office by this date. Exceptions to this deadline may be made by request if the situation warrants.

• Complete accuracy is a continuing requirement. Misrepresentation of any information is sufficient grounds for cancelling admission or registration.

• You will be notified via e-mail when your application is complete and ready to be reviewed.

Personal Statement

Our award-winning legal writing program recognizes that written communication is vital to the success of Law School graduates. Your Personal Statement (as well as any other essays you may include) may be used to evaluate your writing skills, judgment, passions, and analytical abilities. Please select a subject that you feel is relevant and submit an essay that is two to five double-spaced pages. It is also helpful to the Admissions Committee to discuss your interest in attending the University of Minnesota Law School specifically. If there are other matters you wish to explain, please include separate essays to address them.

Resume

Please include a detailed résumé including the following:

• Work history

• Extracurricular activities and community service, including the extent of your involvement

• Other relevant information, including academic honors and prizes, hobbies, and other special interests, abilities, or accomplishments

Letter of Recommendation

• One Letter of Recommendation from a current law school professor must be received before your application will be reviewed. This may be sent through LSAC or, if it is sent to our office directly, you will need to provide your recommender with our Letter of Recommendation form (see the Forms section of this application).

• Federal legislation gives students attending the Law School the right to inspect and review the Letters of

Recommendation contained in their educational records, unless the student or applicant waives that right and consents to the letters remaining confidential between the Law School and the person writing the recommendation. You may waive the right to access; however, it is not required as a condition for admission to the University of Minnesota Law School.

Diversity Statement

If you wish, you may submit an essay that reflects on your diversity and how it impacted your decision to pursue a career in law.

Character and Fitness

In addition to a bar examination, there are character, fitness, and other qualifications for admission to the bar in every U.S.

jurisdiction. Applicants are encouraged to determine the requirements for any jurisdiction in which they intend to seek

admission by contacting the jurisdiction. Addresses for all relevant agencies are available through the National Conference of Bar Examiners.

For Further Information: please visit our website at www.law.umn.edu. You will find answers to common questions and visitor's information. Questions not answered on the website or in these instructions may be directed to the Office of Admissions at: jdadmissions@umn.edu or 612-625-3487.

The University of Minnesota is committed to the policy that all persons shall have equal access to its programs, facilities, and employment without regard to race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, disability, public assistance status, veteran status, or sexual orientation.

The University produces an annual security and fire safety report. This report includes information on campus crime statistics, information relating to personal and campus safety, fire safety, and security policies and programs.
