Events Details, continued from previous page
Here we are in September and still wondering whether or not our events will be in
person or on Zoom or both. Be sure to always check to find out the latest on the events in which you are interested. The regulations/suggestions seem to be changing almost every day, depending upon the Covid Crisis. We hope you are all vaccinated. It protects you and others that you love. Remember that you might still be vulnerable to Covid, but you won’t wind up in the hospital and you will live to enjoy many more happy and musical days.
Speaking of music, September brings us a Corey Harris Concert, as well as the Irish Traditional Music Sessions, the Sunnyside Singers sessions in Queens, the Folk Open Sing in Brooklyn, the Seaport Chantey Virtual Sing and the Staten Island Virtual Sing. One advantage of the Virtual Sings is that you don’t have to worry about traveling!!
We are expecting that our fall Weekend will be inperson at the Hudson Valley Resort and Spa. Check out Page 9. Next month’s issue will have even more information and a registration blank.
He began his career as a New Orleans street singer, traveling throughout the southern U.S.
In his early twenties he lived in Cameroon, West Africa for a year, which had a profound effect on his later work. He has recorded many old songs of the blues tradition, while also creating an original vision of the blues by adding influences from reggae, soul, rock, and West African music. Harris is a truly unique voice in contemporary music. In
2003 Harris was a featured artist and narrator of the Martin Scorcese film, “Feel Like Going Home,” which traced the evolution of blues from West Africa to the southern U.S. In 2007, he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. He holds an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Bates College, in Lewiston, Maine.

Congratulations to Judy Polish and Phil Stroh. They welcomed their second great
granddaughter to the world in June 2021. Her name is Celeste Adrienne, and is the daughter of Judy’s granddaughter Rachel Polish and Phil Garcia who live in Carmel, New York. When Judy visited, Celeste’s older sister Sloane sang “Have you seen the Ice Cream Man” to the tune of “Have You seen the Muffin Man” and she was right on key. “Speaking of keys,” Judy remarks, “she also sang something from Alicia Keys.” Judy had heard of Alicia Keys but didn’t know her music. “So,”
marvels greatgrandma Judy, “this 3 1/2 yearold is way ahead of me. I must expose her to some folk music!”
Bob Malenky writes: “A new book has been released by the University of Mississippi Press called New York City Blues edited by John Broven. There is a chapter about me and my experiences in the blues world, and a lot of information about this neglected part of the blues story. Aside from my chapter, there is additional material by me about Reverend Gary Davis and Larry Johnson. I also make a quick mention of the club. I'm sure some club members would be interested to know about it, since blues is an inseparable part of folk music.” Congratulations Bob!
Mark and Rita Hamburgh’s son and his family moved to Orange County, California just before the pandemic hit last year. Mark and Rita visited them for one week in June. Mark got in touch with Harry Baya, who also now lives in Orange County.
Since Harry is wonderful with kids, Mark asked Harry whether he’d like to meet his 3 and 5yearold grandchildren. Harry drove over and delighted the children with banjo, songs, stickers,
stories and drawings.
“It was great to see Mark and Rita,” Harry recalls. “I love being with kids and the senior living village I am in has none. Mark, Rita and I sang to the kids a little. We hope to sow some seeds for the future.” Here is a photo that Mark sent.
