Pastor’s Message – June 2021
This past Sunday was Pentecost Sunday for Christian churches. Acts 2:1-21 reading tells the Spirit’s coming (Acts 2:1–4), the responses of questioning (v. 12) and sneering (v. 13) of those who hear them speaking in other languages (vv. 5–13), and Peter’s sermon (vv. 14–21).
In Acts, Luke says that the believers were all gathered together when the unexpected happened (2:1). As the followers of Jesus attempt to form community in his absence, Luke tells a fiery baptism that inaugurates the gift of the Spirit to the members of the fledgling/emerging community.
The significance of this Pentecost festival changes over time through the tradition, but one thing remains constant - it is associated with God giving good gifts.
The most dramatic sign of the Spirit is the miracle of mutualstanding. Women and men, slaves,
free, Jews, Gentile proselytes, and people from every known land and ethnicity participate in the gift of the Spirit. A miracle of recognition transpires across impossible boundaries of class, ethnicity, and religion, people joyfully communicate. It is as if they are intoxicated—as they are, but not with
wine. It is significant that the primary sign of the inspiration of the Spirit, the founding event of the new Christian community, is the ability to speak to and understand a diversity of people.
What are ways we today can learn to understand people from different lands and backgrounds?
As we struggle with a national crisis regarding the mistreatment of immigrants and refugees, as well as patterns of racial and ethnic pro-filing, a dramatic rise in hate crimes and white supremacist acts of violence, Christians need to turn to this text as a reminder that the fruit of the Spirit is under-standing across cultural boundaries.
Looking beyond the confines of the church, we see that the Spirit is active in new visions of justice and liberation. In the Black Lives Matter movement, the Women’s March, #metoo, and
crusades for environmental justice, we witness the fierce love the Spirit has for this troubled
world.
Where many of us begin to grow discouraged, the Spirit continually inspires new visions of flour-ishing. She demands we join her in recognizing the sacred in all human beings and in the beauty and fragility of creation. Social movements are never perfect; they never embody or achieve the kingdom of God. Nevertheless, newly energized social movements re-envision how we can cherish the world, delight in its beauty, and heal its hurts.
The Spirit moves not only in the liberative dance of justice, but in all the ways we humans en-counter the Divine. Whenever we are encouraged to be joyful or awakened to the delight in the flour-ishing of others, we sense the wonder of the Spirit.
God provides harvest, instruction for faithful living, and the Spirit that manifests God’s presence
and empowers faithful witness. God gives what God’s people need. Let us join the dance of the Spir-it in our midst. Let us celebrate gifts of God in our differences and wSpir-itness the fruSpir-its of the SpirSpir-it in our midst.
Thank you again for your partnership with me in the ministry of our witness to the community and the world. May God richly and continually bless you and your ministry! God loves you and so do I! Blessings always,

KEEPING A ROOF OVER OUR HEADS
Last month the Administrative Council approved a Trustee Committee proposal to move ahead with replacing the rubber roofing sections of our church’s roof, doing so in 3 sections.
An estimate from Professional Roofing for these 3 sections of rubber roofing included these figures: Section 1 (the educational unit) $54,000
Section 2 (the office, narthex, hallways, library) $68,800 Section 3 (fellowship hall) $24,500
They are hoping to complete section one late this fall, with sections 2 & 3 on the docket for 2022.
We have an Endowment/Maintenance Fund established through bequests for just such expenses. However, if we are to remain fiscally responsible for future needs of this building, we need to invite immediate participa-tion in funding for this $150,000 roofing project. We propose that we would use the endowment fund to match new contributions to the project. Therefore if you would use the Endowment/Maintenance line on your offering envelopes and write “roof” after it, we could track these special contributions and can report progress periodically over the next year and a half.
We realize that we will most likely be moving toward replacing the roof on the sanctuary and on the chapel in 2023 or 2024 as well so we ask you to keep the Endowment/Maintenance Fund in mind for the next several years.

All children in attendance on these days will get to play outside in the water so make sure to send a swimsuit and towel. We will send out reminder emails and have an activity calendar posted at the Parent Center during the summer months to help remind you. Younger children not potty trained must also bring a Little Swimmers diaper. Just a reminder of Noah’s Ark and Church Policy:
