CATHEDRAL EUCHARIST

The Sixth Sunday after Trinity

(2)

Welcome

to Southwell Minster

As you prepare for worship, please be sensitive to the needs of those around you who may wish to pray in silence. Please switch off mobile telephones and do not use photographic, video or recording equipment at any time. A loop system is in operation throughout the Minster. Hearing aids that are equipped to do so should be switched to the ‘T’ position or the loop setting appropriate to your equipment.

Large print

orders of service are available. Please ask a Churchwarden, Sidesman or Verger for a copy.

Please speak to a Verger if you need to use the toilet facilities.

We are a Fairtrade cathedral, committed to continuing and increasing our use of fairly traded goods wherever possible.

The President of the Eucharist is the Very Revd Nicola Sullivan, Dean of Southwell. The Deacon and Preacher is the Revd Prof. Alison Milbank, Canon Theologian. The Cathedral Choir is directed by Jonathan Allsopp, Assistant Director of Music. The organ is played by James Furniss-Roe, Organ Scholar.

The setting for the Eucharist is the Missa brevis by Lennox Berkeley (1903-89) The congregation is invited to join in all texts printed in bold.

Face coverings are currently required in places of worship, so please wear one inside the Cathedral unless you have a medically recognised reason not to do so.

This service will be livestreamed to the internet, and will be available at www.southwellminster.org/worship-online and on the Minster’s YouTube channel for one week. Livestreaming allows those joining from home to participate in the same act of worship as those in the Cathedral.

Communion

Communion will be received in silence in one kind only (bread); the Church teaches that Holy Communion is received fully in either the consecrated wafer or the wine. Please follow the instructions of Churchwardens to approach the sanctuary. Please make use of the hand sanitiser dispenser provided as you approach. There will be 2-metre spaces marked on the floor of the aisle; please observe these to keep social distance. Please keep your face covering in place until you have received the host in your hand, and replace it after consuming the host. After receiving Communion, please return to your seat via the side aisles. Gluten-free wafers are available. Please speak to a Churchwarden before the service (if possible) to request one.

Standing, Sitting and Kneeling

Throughout the booklet, you will find various references to posture:

- Standing is used for parts of the service where the emphasis is on praising or praying to God together; so we usually stand to sing hymns, and for certain important prayers.

- Sitting indicates listening and receiving; so we sit for the first and second readings from the Bible, and for the sermon.

- Kneeling is the traditional position for personal prayer. Please speak to one of the Vergers or Sidesmen if you would like a cushion for kneeling.

ENITENCE

Deacon God so loved the world

that he gave his only Son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins, to be our advocate in heaven, and to bring us to eternal life. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith,

firmly resolved to keep God’s commandments and to live in love and peace with all.

Silence is kept.

Most merciful God,

Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed.

We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy

forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly,

love mercy,

and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen.

BSOLUTION

President Almighty God,

who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you,

pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal;

Merciful God,

you have prepared for those who love you such good things as pass our understanding: pour into our hearts such love toward you

which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,

fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance towards redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Deacon Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord.

(9)

For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. For John had been telling Herod, ‘It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.’ And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, ‘Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.’ And he solemnly swore to her, ‘Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.’ She went out and said to her mother, ‘What should I ask for?’ She replied, ‘The head of John the baptizer.’ Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, ‘I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.’ The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Please sit when invited by the preacher.

REED

President Let us declare our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

FFERTORY

H

YMN during which the table is prepared for Communion

Please do not sing along, but you may wish to pray the words silently as you listen.

There’s a wideness in God’s mercy Like the wideness of the sea;

There’s a kindness in his justice Which is more than liberty.

There is no place where earth’s sorrows Are more felt than up in heaven;

There is no place where earth’s failings Have such kindly judgement given. For the love of God is broader

Than the measure of man’s mind; And the heart of the Eternal

Is most wonderfully kind.

But we make his love too narrow By false limits of our own;

And we magnify his strictness With a zeal he will not own. There is plentiful redemption In the blood that has been shed; There is joy for all the members In the sorrows of the Head.

There is grace enough for thousands Of new worlds as great as this;

There is room for fresh creations In that upper home of bliss.

If our love were but more simple, We should take him at his word; And our lives would be all gladness In the joy of Christ our Lord.

The Lord is here. His Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks,

holy Father, almighty and eternal God. From sunrise to sunset this day is holy, for Christ has risen from the tomb and scattered the darkness of death with light that will not fade.

This day the risen Lord walks with your gathered people, unfolds for us your word,

and makes himself known in the breaking of the bread. And though the night will overtake this day

(14)

And so, with choirs of angels and with all the heavenly host, we proclaim your glory

and join their unending song of praise:

Choir Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth,

pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis.

Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

President Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit,

and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine

may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed,

took bread and gave you thanks;

he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper

he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you;

this is my blood of the new covenant,

which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it,

(15)

Deacon Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died:

Christ is risen:

Christ will come again.

President And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross,

his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory,

we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup

and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup,

so that we, in the company of the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever,

through Jesus Christ our Lord;

by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!

Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee; Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty!

God in three persons, blessèd Trinity! Holy, Holy, Holy! all the saints adore thee,

Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,

Which wert and art and evermore shalt be.

Holy, Holy, Holy! though the darkness hide thee, Though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, Only thou art holy, there is none beside thee

Perfect in power, in love, and purity. Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!

All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea; Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!

God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!

Step 4 and lifting restrictions - Following the Prime Minister’s announcement last Monday, the Minster’s Restart group has begun to anticipate making changes from Monday 19 July. We are awaiting the Government's confirmation of Step 4 on 12 July followed by the Church of England’s guidance for public worship. We are hoping very much to hear that congregational singing will soon return!

Morning Prayer – From Monday 19July, Morning Prayer will return to St Oswald’s Chapel in the Minster and will no longer take place on Microsoft Teams. All are very welcome to join the clergy at 8.30am, Monday–Saturday.

Weekday and Saturday Eucharists – A reminder that out weekday Eucharists have now changed to their new times - from Monday to Friday taking place at 12.15pm and on Saturday at 9am.

Supporting Newark Foodbank – The following items are especially needed in July: Tinned cold meat, instant mashed potato, tinned or microwaveable sponge puddings, washing-up liquid, shampoo, deodorant, hand wash, soap bars. Items can be donated at the Co-op, One Stop, and Lloyds Chemist.

Funeral of Fred Munday

We have recently been saddened to hear of Fred Munday’s death. Fred was a Steward and member of the Friends and worshipped at the Minster with his friend Margaret Waddington when he was well enough to do so. His funeral will be in the Minster on Wednesday 14 July at 2pm. Please contact Margaret if you would like to attend as regrettably numbers will be restricted to the capacity of the nave, which is 70.

Christian Aid Week 2021: A huge thank you! Southwell Christian Aid Committee, which is part of Churches Together in Southwell, wishes to express its gratitude to all our supporters in Southwell, and the nearby villages of Edingley, Fiskerton, Halam, Morton, Normanton and Upton. During May over 100 volunteers walked from door – to –door to post a donation envelope through your door. Thanks to your generous donations to the envelopes and our Just Giving page, we have been able to donate a fantastic £7300 to Christian Aid. “Every last drop” highlighted the immense problems faced in Kenya through water shortage, the result of climate change -which is the focus of Christian Aid’s work in 2021. The money raise locally will enable the charity to offer 5 communities the money to build an earth dam at £1400 each, giving them a reliable source of water - vastly improving their lives and livelihoods.
