Year 5D Class ASSEMBLY - SPACE

Jordan Good morning everybody.

Dexter Welcome to 5D’s Assembly.

Raphael This half term, we have been learning about the Earth and ...

ALL LETTERS SPACE!

Zuraine S is for Solar System

Valentina The sun is at the centre of our solar system.

9 planets travel around the sun.

The planets and the sun together are called the solar system.

Lency (Sun) I am the sun. I’m a hot ball of burning gas and is very hot – about 15 million degrees celsius.

The sun gives us light and heat. Without the sun we would die.

LETTERS S – P – A – C – E SPACE!

Tiffeny P is for Planets

Lily Each of the 8 planets travels around the sun in its own orbit.

The word ‘planet’ comes from the Greek verb ‘to wander’.

Diana The planet nearest to the sun is Mercury.

(2)

Chloe (Mercury) I am a small, rocky planet and a lot like your Moon.

I’m covered with craters and scientists think there might be volcanoes on my surface.

Vanesa The 2

nd

planet from the sun is Venus.

Molly (Venus) I am the nearest planet to Earth.

I’m a small, rocky planet covered in a thick layer of yellowish clouds. These clouds are not made of water (like the ones here on Earth), they are made of poisonous acid. I have no moons but I’m named after the Roman goddess of Love.

Diana The 3

rd

planet from the sun is Earth.

Farrah (Earth) I am the only planet in our solar system to have life and running water. I’m a small, rocky planet and over three quarters of my surface is covered in water.

Vanesa The 4

th

planet from the sun is Mars.

Robert (Mars) I am a small, rocky planet which is red in colour.

It is very cold here with strong winds and dust storms.

I have a mountain called Olympus which is 24 kilometres high. I also have two tiny moons.

Diana The 5

th

planet from the sun is Jupiter.

Michal (Jupiter) I am the biggest planet in the solar system.

At 318 times bigger than the Earth, I am so big that you could fit all the other planets inside me. I am made of gas and have 16 moons. My Great Red Spot is thought to be a storm of swirling gas- yep, I even have cool spots!

Diana The 6

th

planet from the sun is Saturn.

Scarlett (Saturn) Even if I do say so myself, I am one of the most beautiful planets in our solar system. I have the most moons and am famous for my thousands of rings which are made of rocks and ice. My favourite song is Single Ladies by Beyonce.

Vanesa The 7

th

planet from the sun is Uranus.

(3)

Malakai (Uranus) I was discovered in 1781 and it takes me 85 Earth years to go around the sun. I look blue because of the methane gas covering me and I have 15 moons!

Diana The 8

th

planet from the sun is Neptune.

Maria (Neptune) Like Uranus, I also look blue because of the methane gas

covering me. It is very windy on here, the winds are the fastest in the solar system – reaching 2000 kilometres per hour. I have 8 moons – 8 small ones and a large moon called Triton.

Yohan (Pluto) Hey what about me?!

Vanesa Pluto, we’ve told you before, you’ve been downgraded to a dwarf- planet. You’re not in the same league as the other planets

anymore.

Yohan (Pluto) Well, everyone still knows who I am. Disney even named a dog after me! But yes, I am a dwarf planet and am the furthest away from the sun. Apparently I’m not big enough to be considered a real planet. I am made of rock and am the only planet that hasn’t been visited by a spacecraft, so you don’t know much about

me...I’m mysterious. I am in darkness because I’m is so far away from the sun, but I do have a moon unlike many planets, called Charon.

Diana The 8 planets are:

(EACH PLANET) Mercury – Venus – Earth – Mars – Jupiter – Saturn - Uranus–

Neptune

Michal We have learnt a rhyme to help us to remember their order from the sun:

ALL PLANETS My Very Exceptional Mother Just Served Us Nachos

Maria We have also made up some rhymes of our own:

RHYME 1

RHYME 2

(4)

RHYME 3

Ella A is for Axis

Valentina (Globe) The Earth isn’t quite straight. It is tilted over to one side on an imaginary axis that runs through the North Pole at the top and the South Pole at the bottom.

It takes just over 365 days, or 1 year, for the Earth to go around the sun.

All the time it is spinning like a top and each turn takes 24 hours. That’s why we have day and night.

Angel It’s daytime for us when our side of the Earth faces the sun.

It’s night time when we are facing away from the sun.

We have 4 seasons – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

The seasons happen because the Earth is tilted on its axis.

It’s Summer for us when we are tilted towards the sun.

We have more daylight hours and it’s warmer.

It’s winter when we are tilted away from the sun.

We have less daylight hours and it’s colder.

Maks C is for Constellations

Somto When we look up into the sky on a clear night, the twinkling lights we see are called stars.

A star is a big ball of gas.

If you look hard at the stars you can see patterns called

constellations.

(5)

Faith The Ancient Greeks used to tell stories about the stars.

They gave names to the constellations.

URSA MAJOR This is Ursa Major = the Great Bear.

Lency

CYGNUS This is Cygnus – the Swan.

Malakai

ORION This is Orion – the Warrior.

Naveyah

URSA, CYGNUS Look for us in the sky on a clear night.

& ORION

Naylah The sun is our nearest star.

It takes about 8 minutes for its light to reach us on Earth.

Some stars are hundreds of times bigger than the sun.

Cliffmarc E is for Exploration

Faith People have dreamed about going to the moon for hundreds of years.

This dream came true in 1969 when 2 American astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the Moon for the first time.

Niel Armstrong That’s one small step for man…one giant leap for mankind.

(Jordan)

Naveyah The Moon has no air, no wind and no rain. If we visited the Moon today we would still be able to see the astronauts’ footprints from 1969 because there is nothing to remove them.

Timothy To finish our Assembly, we are going to read a poem called

‘Sailing out to Space’ then sing a song we learnt with Miss Smart.

Zuraine Sailing out to Space

I dream of sailing out to space, Upon a yacht of stars,

With port holes all along the sides, I’d gaze amazed at Mars.

Tiffeny With a mast made strong with spider webs,

(6)

And a sail of fluffy clouds,

I’d watch the Earth go sweeping past, As out to space I ploughed.

Ella With stars in front and stars behind, And planets far and near,

I’d sail my yacht around the rings, Of Saturn with a cheer.

Maks And onwards passing Jupiter, To watch the big, red storm, Then far around its outer moons, And through an asteroid storm.

Cliffmarc I dream of sailing out to space, To catch a star or two,

Exploring through the universe, And just take in the view.

Children all stand up and sing
