Scream

“Tom, hold on tight!” shouted my mother.

“Don’t lean out of the seat!” yelled my father from the seat behind me.

As the roller coaster sped down the first slope, it felt as if we were flying. The hill had not been terribly steep, but I was still relieved when we got to the bottom.

The coaster almost came to a complete stop as it reached the top of the next hill. This was even higher than the first hill. I could see across the entire carnival grounds. The vibrant colors all around were exciting and beautiful. Everything looked tiny and far away. Even the people appeared to be no bigger than miniature toys.

The coaster began to roll again. Soon we were increasing in speed.

My baseball cap flew off! Luckily, my father caught it. My cousin Kirk, who was sitting beside Dad, screamed.

“What a scaredy cat!” I thought to myself. I wasn’t going to scream! Still, I closed my eyes and hoped we would soon be at the bottom.

When I felt the coaster gradually slowing down, I opened my eyes again. We were going up an even larger hill than the last one. Slowly, the coaster climbed upwards. I hated the way the coaster vibrated, jerked, and clanked. It seemed like it could topple off the tracks at any moment. I knew how terrified I would be on the ride down.

When we reached the top of the final hill, the people below seemed like ants. I thought, This will be some ride down! This was the scariest hill of all. This was the scariest roller coaster of all! I felt terrified and horrible and happy all at

Different Cultures

Amy’s school needed to have a fundraiser so they could earn money to buy more computers.

Amy knew that many of her classmates' families were from different countries around the world. They had many special traditions, spoke many different languages, and ate many different types of foods.

Amy had a brilliant idea for a fundraiser! She suggested that every student could bring in their favorite dish and hold an ethnic dinner night. She knew parents and members of the community would be glad to pay money in order to try foods from all over the world!

“That’s a great idea,” Amy’s teacher said. “Let’s call it ‘Dinner Around the World’.”

Amy brought in her favorite meal, chicken and dumplings with mashed potatoes.

Her friend Amina was from Ethiopia, an African country. She brought in stewed beef with spices over rice pilaf with Ethiopian bread.

Ibrahim, from Morocco, brought a dish of spiced grilled lamb over white rice with fried eggplant and hummus with pita bread.

Juan, from Mexico, brought chicken fajitas with Spanish rice and tortilla chips with cheese dip.

Rajat, whose family is from India, brought in chicken curry over rice with raita, a sauce of yogurt mixed with cucumber.
