Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

Over a year ago, on March 17, 2020, I announced that all public Masses were suspended in the Diocese of Ogdensburg due to the Coronavirus. The faithful were dispensed from their obligation to participate at Sunday Eucharist. After consultation with public health officials, certain protocols were established in our parishes and the public celebration of the Eucharist resumed.

Our churches have proven to be among the safest places to come together, a great testament to the ongoing hard work of pastors, parish staffs and our parishioners.

Our parishes have engaged in creative ways to foster worship during this health emergency. Livestreaming has permitted many of the faithful to watch the liturgy. As you know, while this has been a great benefit to so many, it can never replace our actual presence at Mass with our parish family.

The time has come for Catholics to return to public worship at Mass on Sundays. On June 6, the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, I reinstate the obligation to attend Sunday Mass in the Diocese of Ogdensburg. However we remember that there are times when this obligation does not apply:

 If an individual struggles with serious health concerns or is physically or morally prevented from worshipping at Mass

 If an individual, because of age or illness, believes that going into public places, including Sunday Mass, would place that per son’s health or that of their loved ones in serious peril;

or

 If an individual is sick, has been in contact with someone who has been sick or is caring for a seriously ill person who requires their presence.

I urge our sisters and brothers who are unable to participate at Mass to make holy the Lord’s Day by praying, reflecting on Sacred Scripture and performing works of charity.

Why is the obligation lifted now? Things have changed since St. Patrick’s Day 2020. A vaccination for the virus has been found to be effective, safe and available. Our protocols have enabled our churches to be safe places to gather. Certain restrictions remain in place, thus providing a measure of comfort for those who attend Mass.

The Eucharist is the “source and summit” of our Catholic faith. The celebration of the Mass is the center of the life of the Church. At every Mass Christ continually nourishes and forms His pilgrim Church as she journeys towards the Kingdom. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “the principal fruit of receiving the Eucharist in Holy Communion is an intimate union with Christ Jesus. While we each personally receive Holy Communion, it is not a private devotion. The reception of Holy Communion is an integral part of our worship as a community of faith. In receiving Holy Communion, we are united to Jesus and to one another.”

The Bishop’s Letter Continued

Celebrating Mass takes us beyond a narrow concern for our- selves and moves us to promote the common good and to uphold the dignity of every human person. Tragically, even before live- streamed Masses, Catholics have been dramatically absent from Sunday Mass. With the lifting of this dispensation, we pray that more hearts will experience a renewed fervor and love for the Holy Eucharist and in keeping the Lord’s Day every Sunday.

We all need divine medicine and heavenly food for the soul—

See you at Mass!

Faithfully yours in Christ,

Reverend Terry R. LaValley Bishop of Ogdensburg

From the Pastor’s Desk….

This weekend we extend words of thanks and gratitude to Fr. Herman Pongantung, MSC for his priestly ministry among us and bubbly personality. We extend our best wishes to

Fr. Herman as he takes on a new assignment with the

Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in the month of June. He will be headed to Pennsylvania on June 1st. We will miss you Fr. Herman! His new address will be in future bulletins so we can keep in touch and pass on any helpful instructions for his golf game.

With the number of priests on staff going from 3 to 2, the Mass schedule for the month of June has been slightly altered to accommodate my schedule and give me time to consider what will be the best schedule going forward. In the month of June, the weekend schedule will stay the same. However, the weekday schedule has been altered.

Mass at St. Anthony’s remains the same Mon.-Fri at 7:00am Mass at St. Patrick’s remains the same Mon-Fri at Noon.

Mass at Holy Family will be Monday-Thursday at 5:15pm instead of 9:00am. I will keep you informed of any further changes. Thank you for being flexible

Congratulations to the youth and adults of the Churches in Watertown who received the Sacrament of Confirmation earlier this week from Bishop LaValley. Thank you to Fr. Frank Natale, MSC, the pastor of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart for being a wonderful host for this celebration in the faith of our parishioners.

A FEW THOUGHTS ON TRINITY SUNDAY-LTP Sourcebook 2021

One of the best ways to approach the Holy Trinity is to spend time with Scripture. Who God is in heaven above (the deep mystery of God’s being) can always be seen in what God does on earth below (God’s divine activity in the world for the sake of salvation). The reality of the Trinity lies deeply embedded in the New Testament and emerged over time. The Church discerned and taught from Scripture the witness of both Testaments: that the one God of biblical Israel at the heart of creation and redemption is a reality of three persons. It is the mind

interpreting Scripture and not Scripture alone, that leads us to the truth of salvation and the doctrine on the Trinity.

DID YOU KNOW

Cedar Tree: Symbol of Mary

The cedar tree is a tree planted by God (Psalm 104:16, Isaiah 41:19). It is considered to be the first of trees (1 Kings 4:33). The Bible describes the cedar tree as strong and durable (Isaiah 9:10), graceful and beautiful (Psalm 80:10, Ezekiel 17:23), high and tall (Amos 2:9, Ezekiel 17:22), fragrant (Song of Songs 4:11) and spreading wide (Psalm 80:10-11). The eagle makes its nest and perches in the high branches of the cedar trees (Jeremiah 22:23, Ezekiel 17:3-5). The cedar tree is mentioned 72 times in the Bible.

The cedar tree symbolizes resilience. And in Lebanon, the tree serves as an important cultural symbol for that reason. Poets and artists have conveyed the tree as a sign of strength and eternity, especially given the tree's endurance through tumultuous periods of history.

Cedar wood was imported by King Solomon (1 Kings 10:27, 1 Kings 5:10- 11).and used in building temples, palaces and ships; he even made himself a chariot out of cedar.

Cedars grow best in deep soil and near banks of water so that the roots have access to water. Mary is called “the Cedar of Lebanon” as her roots are deep into the earth of Lebanon. The cedar of Lebanon has been the national emblem of Mary in the heart of Lebanon, known for its diversity and non-Christian environment. The branches of the Lebanon cedar withstand the changes of the season; Mary’s beauty and grace withstand all time.

The cedar is mentioned in Sirach 24:13, known as the cedrus exaltata, the exalted cedar. Mary has been exalted like the cedar tree.

Fragrance and oil of the cedar repels and destroys snakes, symbol of evil. Similarly, Mary protects the Church and its message against heresy. The cedar is known for its longevity and resistance to decay.

Similarly, Mary's sinlessness is an expression of immortality and absence of bodily degeneration. The cedar is a tall and noble tree. It becomes thus a symbol for Mary's considerable spiritual stature, excellence and human perfection in God.

The litanies of the Virgin Mary in Lebanon add the invocation, “Cedar of Lebanon, pray for us.”

Note: There are only four recognized species of cedar - the Atlas cedar, the Cyprus cedar, the Deodar cedar, and the Lebanon cedar.

There is a cedar tree, species unknown, on the Black River Trail.

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday, May 30, 2021

Gospel Reading: Matthew 28:16-20

Jesus sends his disciples to make disciples of all nations.

Family Connection

The Solemnity of the Holy Trinity invites us to remember that God has revealed himself to us as one God in three Persons. As Jesus departed from his disciples, he shared with them the power to make disciples of all nations. He taught his disciples to invite others to share in the life of the blessed Trinity by sharing with others the gift of Baptism. This continues to be the mission of the Church. Each of us who has been baptized shares in the life of the blessed Trinity and also shares in the Church’s mission of inviting others to share in God’s love.

As you gather as a family, bring out pictures and other mementos of family celebrations of the Sacrament of Baptism. Talk about the significance of Baptism with your family. Read together today’s Gospel, Matthew 28:16-20. Notice that Jesus taught his disciples to baptize all nations in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. What else does this remind you of? (the Sign of the Cross) Recall that whenever we pray the Sign of the Cross, we are reminding ourselves that we are united with God through our Baptism and share in the life of the blessed Trinity. Conclude by thanking God for sharing his life with us. Pray together the Glory Be to the Father.
