Configure Firewall for OptoLyzer Suite

Application Note

1 Preface

This application note informs how you have to set the firewall when using the OptoLyzer Suite (chapter 2). The ports used by each OptoLyzer OL3XXX are listed in chapter 3 on page 5.

2 How to Set the Firewall when Using OptoLyzer Suite?

A firewall is often part of a computer system or network. It is designed to block unauthorized access while permitting communication in both directions in and out. If SMSC’s OptoLyzer G2 (i.e., OptoLyzer Suite and an OptoLyzer OL3XXX) is used on a customer laptop/PC where a firewall is installed, the firewall’s settings must be respectively configured. As the OptoLyzer Suite always requires the installation of the OptoLyzer Components the ports the OptoLyzer Components is using have also to be configured.

If the Windows Firewall is used it is sufficient to add the ports the OptoLyzer Components and the OptoLyzer Suite are using in an exception list or simply the applications OptoLyzer Components and OptoLyzer Suite themselves. The procedures are described in the sections 2.1 and 2.3.

If another firewall is used ensure the settings are performed for the network connection the OptoLyzer Suite is connecting to. If you are not sure ask the corporate administrator for help when configuring the firewall settings.

The port numbers that are used by OptoLyzer Components and OptoLyzer Suite are listed in section

2.2 “Ports Used by SMSC’s MOST Tools”.

2.1 Add OptoLyzer Suite to Exception List

Adding OptoLyzer Suite to the exception list of the firewall requires also adding the OptoLyzer Components to the exception list. This means all ports OptoLyzer Components and OptoLyzer Suite are using are added automatically in the exception list. In the following example the OptoLyzer Suite is added to the exception list.

1. Login as a user with administrator rights.

2. Start Control Panel.

3. Start Windows Firewall.

If another application is used for maintaining the firewall, ask the corporate administrator for help.

4. Switch to tab Exceptions.

5. Click ‘Add Program’.

6. Select OptoLyzer Components in the list and confirm (this is because OptoLyzer Suite requires the OptoLyzer Components for a proper operation).

7. Click ‘Add Program’.

8. Select OptoLyzer Suite in the list and confirm.

All port numbers used by the OptoLyzer Suite are added to the exception list.

2.3 Set Port Numbers

Alternatively you can also configure the single ports. In the following example the configuration of an exception is described for port number 28004 and protocol TCP.

1. Login as a user with administrator rights.

2. Start Control Panel.

3. Start Windows Firewall.

If another application is used for maintaining the firewall, ask the corporate administrator for help.

4. Switch to tab Exceptions.

5. Click ‘Add Port’.

6. Enter the port number e.g., 28004 and a friendly name.

7. Select the TCP radio button and click OK.

The same procedure has to be performed for all port numbers used by the OptoLyzer Components

and the OptoLyzer Suite (refer to section 2.2 Ports Used by ).
